  • Although play is a key element in child development, little research has been done on how play is conceptualized by adults directly involved with children on a daily basis. The purpose of the study was to determine meanings of the concept "play" held by mothers of preschool children in Korea. Specifically, the study sought to determine Korean mothers' conceptions of the nature and functions of play, and their conceptions of play in contrast to work. An open-ended/semi-structured interview instrument was constructed to generate research data. Interview questions focused on three content categories: (1) the nature of play, (2) the functions of play, and (3) conceptions of work. Questions in each content category consisted of four distinct types: (1) experience/behavioral, (2) opinion/value, (3) feeling, and (4) knowledge. The instrument was pilot-tested with two subjects, revised, and administered to eleven mothers of preschool children. Interview data were subjected to domain and taxonomic analyses. Analyses yielded two principal themes: (1) Play is viewed as an intrinsically motivated and pleasurable activity; (2) while play and work could be consonant, the values inherent in play and work are generally in opposition.

  • Development of antiviral resistance to lamivudine is the most important factor for the treatment failure. It is necessary to establish proper guidelines to overcome drug resistance for children with chronic hepatitis B. Primary treatment with lamivudine should be considered if patients are in immune-clearance phase and have persistently elevated ALT levels more than twice the upper limit of normal value. Before initiating the therapy, careful consideration of the patient's status is required to exclude abnormal liver function tests due to other causes. The treatment option should be carefully decided to suppress the viral replication effectively. To obtain good compliance, clinicians should educate patients and their parents. Appropriate monitoring for virologic breakthrough and genotypic resistance is important in deciding to change the treatment plan. Sequential monotherapy should be avoided and a combination of drugs in other categories is recommended. New antiviral agents, such as entecavir and tenofovir, which have high potency and high genetic barrier, are soon expected to be available for use with children.

  • The children's playgrounds have been installed almost from the beginning when the first apartment complex was built. The brightness of a playground has not been considered in the architectural plan. The site of the playground has been chosen based on availability without making a detailed review on its daylight environment. The purpose of this study is to provide the Sky Ratio Diagram for the evaluation of daylight environment at the children's playground in apartment complexes. the Sky Ratio Diagram has 100 points, each point has a value of equal to the sky ratio 1%. Through case studies, the Sky Ratio Diagram was verified whether it could be practically applied to the actual playgrounds. This research is meaningful in that it suggests a way to quantitatively evaluate the brightness of a playground. The Sky Ratio Diagram suggested in this study can be practically used when choosing a site for a playground within an apartment complex.

  • The objective of this paper is to provide fundamental data to establish measuring system of clothing that is more accurate. For the objective, stature and ration of height items, stature and ratio of circumference item, stature and ratio of length item on the children are investigated to obtain the interrelation of each item. Data for the research are selected from 52 people of 6 years old on boys and 49 people of 6 years old on girls who dwell in Seoul. The results of the research are as follows. Because ratio of the body on the stature of children is different from ratio of the adult, the same method for the adult cloth is not appropriate when producing the cloth of the children. observing the interrelation of each measurement item, measurement system of the children cloth that is indicated by the stature and the breast circumference, the stature and the waist circumference is not reasonable. Because the value of correlation of back length and circumference item was, it is not suitable that the back length is graded by the breast circumference when producing the cloth of the children.

  • Background: Nasalance is used to evaluate the velopharyngeal incompetence in clinical diagnoses using a nasometer. The aim of this study is to find the nasalance differences between Vietnamese cleft palate children and Korean cleft palate children by measuring the nasalance of five oral vowels. Methods: Ten Vietnamese cleft palate children after surgery, three Vietnamese children for the control group, and ten Korean cleft palate children after surgery with the same age participated in this experimentation. Instead of Korean control, the standard value of Korean version of the simplified nasometric assessment procedures (kSNAP) was used. Result: The results are as follows: (1) the highest nasalance score among the Vietnamese normal vowels is the low vowel /a/; however, that of Korean normal vowels is the high vowel /i/. (2) The average nasalance score of Korean cleft palate vowels is 18% higher than that of Vietnamese cleft palate vowels. There was a nasalance score of over 45% among the vowels /e/ and /i/ in Vietnamese cleft palate patients and /i/, /o/, and /u/ in Korean cleft palate patients. Conclusion: These different nasalance scores of the same vowels seem to cause an ethnic difference between Vietnamese and Korean cleft palate children.

  • The objective of this study consists in promoting seafood consumption by increasing its intake opportunities for children through analysis of seafood using frequency in the elementary school lunch program. For that purpose, randomly sampled out from elementary schools through the county were 155 dietitians and 5th grade 3581 children, on whom a mail survey was conducted to analyse their seafood using frequency, and preference, and lunch menu by seasons. Results of this study are as follows : The seafood using frequency of the respondents represented the highest value in one or two times a week, while obstacles in seafood use presented high values in the safety of food by 71.6% and children preference by 68.4%. The seafood intake frequency of the respondents showed the highest value in three or four times a week by 34.5% and the places of seafood intake indicated the highest response in the home by 43.5% and then school lunch and dining out. The dietitians responded that children for the most part had not a preference for seafood, whereas the children pointed out average by 46.2%. As for reasons for avoidance of seafood, the dietitians expressed the highest response in it depends cooking methods by 45.8%, while the children because of its peculiar taste and smell by 42.1%. Their required improvement showed the highest response in the taste improvement by 51.8%. The children most preference for seafood that dietitians thought included fried Alaska pollack and shrimp cutlet, while dislikes braised mackerels and seasoned cold jelly fish. Cooking methods frequently used were represented in order of soup, hot soup, and stew, and the children's preferred cooking method was from fried food. Above results suggested that the intention to increase seafood using frequency is needed to at the time of planning the menus so that more seafood-providing opportunities can be given. The development of cooking methods is urgently needed that can change the taste or the smell of seafood, and concurrently with this conveniences be taken into account in eating such as elimination of bones, etc. as early as the states of purchase or checking of seafood. The reflection of the preferred cooking methods is thought to contribute to the enhancement of satisfaction with the seafood as well as to the reduction of food remnants. The recommendation of intake of low preference but nutritionally good seafood is required to be expanded in nutrition education.

  • In this paper I investigate whether Korean-speaking children know the basic meaning of reciprocal anaphors like each other. I further examine whether they have knowledge of subtle differences in the interpretations of such anaphors depending on the two types of verbs. Fiengo and Lasnik (1973) pointed out a contrast between reciprocal sentences with active verbs and stative verbs. For example, a sentence with an active verb like The men in the room are hitting each other, has both a strong reciprocal reading (i.e., everyone of them in the room is hitting every other one) and a weak reciprocal reading (i.e., certain pairs of men are not engaged in the action of hitting each other). In contrast, a sentence with a stative verb like The men in the room know each other allows only a strong reciprocal reading (i.e., everyone of them know every other one). 16 Korean children and 15 Korean adults were tested using the Truth Value Judgment Task methodology. The results of the present study show that like English children, Korean children know the meaning of reciprocal anaphor, and that they also know the semantic difference of reciprocal sentences with active and stative verbs. Therefore, the present study strongly supports the claim that the semantic distinction of reciprocal sentences with active and stative verbs may be universal, and that children's ability of this semantic distinction might be innately given.
