Managing Information Asymmetry Risks Using Deal Syndication and Domain Specialization: An Indian Context

  • We review two specific risk management strategies of venture capitalists (VCs): deal syndication and domain specialization with respect to their explicit role in adjudging and managing the overall magnitude of information asymmetry risks. These are analyzed for three distinct categories of VC firms as classified by their funding stage focus (early vs. late), ownership type (foreign vs. domestic) and the human capital composition of the core VC team (entrepreneurial vs. investor). The analysis is based on both secondary data and primary data for active 72 VC firms in India. Syndication is moderately important for entrepreneurial VC firms, but not at all important for early-stage focused and foreign VC firms. This finding is distinctly different from what has been conventionally observed in the literature. Among the various arenas of domain specialization, high-technology focus is important for all segments of VC firms. In the context of investment-stage focus, foreign VC firms exhibit growth-stage specialization, while entrepreneurial VC firms concentrate on earlier investment stages.

  • VC는 국제적인 발암등급 체계인 IRIS, IARC, ESIS에 의해 인체발암물질로 평가되고 있으며, 경구, 호흡, 경피 노출 경로를 통해 간세포 다형성 등을 유발하는 것으로 보고된 바 있다. 또한 VC는 자연계에서 쉽게 분해되지 않는 유기 염소계용제로서, 대기, 지표수, 지하수, 먹는물, 토양으로 유출되어 인체를 포함한 환경을 오염시킬 가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 현재 우리나라의 수질환경기준과 먹는물 기준에서는 VC에 대한 규제 항목 및 기준치가 제시되어 있지 않으나, 인체 및 수생태계 위해 우려가 있어 특정수질유해물질 및 수질오염물질로 지정된 바 있다. US EPA, 일본, WHO 등 선진국에서는 법적 항목 및 기준치로 VC를 제도적으로 관리하고 있다. 특히 우리나라에서는 2004년 한강 및 낙동강 유역에서 $0.8\sim4.7{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ (검출한계 $0.1{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$),개별배출업소 유출수에서 $10.6\sim668{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$의 농도로 VC가 검출된 사례가 있으며, 독일, 일본, 미국 등의 국외에서 검출된 $0.03\sim566{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ 농도보다 국내 수계 내 VC의 분포 수준이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 국내 인체 위해성 평가 결과 VC에 대한 위해 우려가 높은 것으로 평가된 바 있으며, 생태 위해성 평가는 자료 부족으로 보류된 바 있다. 이 때 활용된 모니터링 자료는 일부 지점 및 단회 기반의 신뢰성 다소 낮은 자료에 국한되므로 지속적인 모니터링 사업을 통해 신뢰성 높은 자료로 대체될 필요가 있다. 또한 물 환경 내 생태독성연구는 일부 시험증에 국한되어 있고, 실험 설계도 VC의 수체 내 농도 감소를 고려하지 않아 결과치가 과다 산정되었을 가능성이 높다. 따라서 지속적으로 다양한 수서생물을 활용한 VC의 생태 독성 자료가 생성되어야 추후 VC에 대한 신뢰도가 높은 생태 위해성 평가가 수행될 것으로 사료된다.

초고속 광 가입자 접속장치용 송신장치 설계 (The Transmit System for Connection System of Super High Speed Optical Fiber Subscriber)

  • 광 가입자용 송신 장치는 가입자 접속부의 ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) 계층으로부터 ATM 셀을 비동기적인 방법으로 FIFO(First In, First Out)를 통해 수신하여 Idle/Unasigned 셀의 삽입, 셀에 대한 HEC(Header Error Correction) 계산, 그리고 셀 페이로드에 대한 스크램블링을 통해 VC4 신호 페이로드에 사상한다. 이때 VC4 POH(Path Over Head)상의 H4 바이트에 의해 셀의 시작점을 지시하고 동시에 POH 오버헤드에 대한 생성, 삽입을 통해 VC4 신호를 형성한다. 이 신호는 AU4 포인터 생성부에서 VC4의 시작점 J1을 생성하여 AUG버스를 통해 STM-1 신호 생성 부에서 프레임 형태로 출력된 후 155Mbps 속도로 광 신호로 변환되어 송신된다.

  • 본 연구에서는 난분해성 물질인 액상의 TCE가 영가철 표면에서 반응시 완전히 분해가 되지 않은 상태에서 생성되어지는 부산물인 Cis-DCE와 VC의 톨루엔 분해균주에 의한 처리 가능성을 회분식 실험으로 관찰하였다. 각각 2ppm의 Cis-DCE와 VC에 톨루엔 균주를 주입한 결과 1차기질로 톨루엔을 사용하고 그후에 Cis-DCE와 VC를 제거 하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 동시에 주입시 1차기질로 톨루엔을 사용하는 것은 동일하나 VC를 먼저 사용하고 그후에 Cis-DCE를 제거하며 제거 속도 또한 줄여드는 것으로 나타났다.

Venture Capital Investments and the IPO performance of Chinese Firms

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of VC investment on the IPO and post-IPO performance of Chinese firms. Design/methodology/approach - By utilizing CSMAR and VentureXpert database, we construct a firm-year panel data covering all listed firms in the Chinese stock market from 2006 to 2018. Findings - First, we find that VC-backed firms are significantly less underpriced than non-VC-backed firms. Our results show that the initial IPO-day return of VC-backed firms is 0.16% lower than that of non-VC-backed firms. Next, we find that VC-backed firms demonstrate significantly worse operating performance than non-VC-backed firms after the IPO. In the next three years following the IPO, VC-backed firms underperform non-VC-backed firms by 0.4% in terms of ROA and by 0.6% in terms of ROE. Research implications or Originality - Our results support the Grandstanding Hypothesis, among several competing hypotheses regarding the effect of VC investment, which suggests that VCs window dress their IPO firms for their early exit at the expense of a poor operating performance of the IPO firms after going public.

Enhanced Antioxidant Activity of Mugwort Herb and Vitamin C in Combination on Shelf-life of Chicken Nuggets

  • The effect of mugwort extract (ME) and vitamin C (VC), added individually or in combination, on color, lipid oxidation, and sensory characteristics of chicken nuggets stored for 12 d was investigated. Eight treatments of chicken nuggets contained the following: Control (no antioxidant added), VC (0.05% VC), ME 0.05 (0.05% ME), ME 0.1 (0.1% ME), ME 0.2 (0.2% ME), VC+ME 0.05 (0.05% VC + 0.05% ME) and VC+ME 0.1 (0.05% VC + 0.1% ME), VC+ME 0.2 (0.05% VC + 0.2% ME). Results showed that the mixture of 0.05% VC and 0.2% ME was most effective for delaying lipid oxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, conjugated dienies, and peroxide formation) when compared to the control or ME alone added. The color values of all treatments were significantly affected by adding ME. Additionally, the total color difference (${\Delta}E$), chroma ($C^*$), and hue angle ($H^{\circ}$) values of all treatments, except for VC, were lower than those of the control as the amount of ME increased. The sensory characteristics (flavor, odor, and overall acceptability) did not differ significantly in any of the chicken nugget samples, whereas storage time had a significant effect. The results suggest that the possibility of utilizing chicken nuggets with a mixture of mugwort extract and vitamin C for the increase of shelf-life and quality.

염화에텐류 화합물 및 전자공여체가 VC 탈염소화 속도에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Chlorinated Ethenes and Electron Donor on VC Dehalogenation Rate)

  • Anaerobic reductive dehalogenation of perchloroethene (PCE) was studied with lactate as the electron donor in a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) inoculated with a mixed culture previously shown to dehalogenate vinyl chloride (VC). cis-1,2- dichloroethene (cDCE) was the dominant intermediate at relatively long cell retention times (>56 days) and the electron acceptor to electron donor molar ratio (PCE:lactate) of 1:2. cDCE was transformed to VC completely at the PCE to lactate molar ratio of 1:4, and the final products of PCE dehalogenation were VC (80%) and ethene (20%). VC dehalogenation was inhibited by cDCE dehalogenation. Propionate produced from the fermentation of lactate might be used as electron donor for the dehalogenation. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of increased hydrogen, VC, and trichloroethene (TCE) on VC dehalogenation which is the rate-limiting step in PCE dehalogenation The addition of TCE increased the VC dehalogenaiton rate more than an increase in the $H_2$ concentration, which suggests that the introduction of TCE induces the production of an enzyme that can comtabolize VC.

  • The electrical properties of viologen derivatives were studied in terms of the tunneling current characteristics on the length of the viologen derivatives using self-assembling techniques and ultra high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV-STM). We fabricated the Au substrate were deposited by thermal evaporation system ($420^{\circ}C$. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were prepared on Au (111), which had been thermally deposited onto freshly cleaved, heated mica. The Au substrate was exposed to a 1 mM solution of viologen derivatives in ethanol for 24 hours to form a monolayer. We measurement of the morphology on the single viologen molecules ($VC_{8}SH$, $VC_{10}SH$, $HSC_{8}VC_{8}SH$, and $HSC_{10}VC_{10}SH$). The current-voltage (I-V) and differential conductance (dl/dV-V) properties were measured while the electrical properties of the formed monolayer were scanned by using a STS. The effective barrier height of viologen derivatives ($VC_{8}SH$, $VC_{10}SH$, $HSC_{8}VC_{8}SH$, and $HSC_{10}VC_{10}SH$) were calculated to be 1.076 eV, 1.56 ${\pm}$ 0.3 eV, 1.85 eV, 2.28 eV, respectively.

VC 첨가가 Ti(CN)계 써메트의 미세구조 및 기계적 성질에 미치는 영향 (Effect of VC Addition on the Microstructure & Mechanical Properties of Ti(CN)-based Cermet)

  • The amount of VC and C/N ratio in Ti(CN) was varied to investigate the effect of VC addition on the mi-crostructural change in Ti(CN)-Ni system. As the amount of VC addition increases in Ti(C0.7N0.3)-20Ni sys-tem a complete solid solution was observed in Ti(C0.7N0.3)-20Ni-25VC system. It implies that the ratio of the dissolution rates of Ti(C0.7N0.3)to that of VC is nearly 2:1 at the sintering conditions used in this study. It was found from the experiments that the system composed of the Ti(C0.7N0.3) phase exhibits a rimless structure and relatively small amount of solid solution. That is among Ti(C0.7N0.3) phase exhibits a rimless structure and relatively small amount of solid solution. This is among Ti(C1-xNx) phases the dissolution rate of Ti(C0.3N0.7) is the lowest. Also fracture toughness(KIC) of the cermet was measured by indentation method. Attentions were paid to crack propagation path to look for a dominant fracture mode and to cor-relate it with fracture toughness values. The fracture toughness was relatively high with the addition of VC content. But the addition of a large VC content reduced the overall toughness of the cermet. This result is explained with the difference in fracture mode.

  • 디지털 비디오 압축 기술은 대역폭과 저장 공간이 제한되는 멀티미디어 데이터의 효율적인 전송과 저장을 가능하게 하는 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 현재 VC-1은 차세대 DVD의 표준으로 채택되어 사용되고 있고 H.264/AVC의 대안으로 제안되고 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 VC-1의 엔트로피 디코더에 대하여 소프트웨어 검증을 통한 최적화 알고리즘을 사용하여 하드웨어 설계 언어인 VHDL 언어를 이용하여 기술하고 ModeSim6.0a를 이용한 데이터 검증을 수행하였다.
