In this paper, we propose a packet scheduling algorithm for cellular relay networks by considering relay selection, variation of channel quality, and packet delay. In the networks, mobile users are equipped with not only cellular but also user relaying radio interfaces, where base station exploits adaptive high speed downlink channel. Our proposed algorithm selects a user with good cellular channel condition as a relay station for other users with bad cellular channel condition but can get access to relay link with good quality. This can achieve flexible packet scheduling by adjusting transmission rates of cellular link. Packets are scheduled for transmission depending on scheduling indexes which are calculated based on user's achieved transmission rate, packet utility, and proportional fairness of their throughput. The performance results obtained by using computer simulation show that the proposed scheduling algorithm is able to achieve high network capacity, low packet loss, and good fairness in terms of received throughput of mobile users.

Instantaneous relay (relay-without-delay) using interference alignment is a promising approach to neutralizing interference and improving system capacity. In Wang Chenwei's work, a 2-user scenario required both source and relay to access the global channel state information (CSI). This paper shows a new method of interference alignment improves the degrees of freedom (DoF) prominently for the 3-user MIMO interference channel with instantaneous relay. This new method is focused on the relay node that completes the alignment interference neutralization so the global CSI is obtained only once and the pressure on the base station can be mitigated. In addition, the 3-user MIMO interference channels with instantaneous relay can achieve 2M DoF when source and destination have M antennas, respectively. This method shows 33% improvement over the conventional method using interference alignment which obtains 3M/2 DoF.

In this paper, we propose an iterative transceiver design in a multi-relay multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. The design criterion is to minimize sum mean squared error (SMSE) under relay sum power constraint (RSPC) where only local channel state information (CSI)s are available at relays. Local CSI at a relay is defined as the CSI of the channel between BS and the relay in the $1^{st}$ hop link, and the CSI of the channel between the relay and all users in the $2^{nd}$ hop link. Exploiting BS transmitter structure which is concatenated with block diagonalization (BD) precoder, each relay's precoder can be determined using local CSI at the relay. The proposed scheme is based on sequential iteration of two stages; stage 1 determines BS transmitter and relay precoders jointly with SMSE duality, and stage 2 determines user receivers. We verify that the proposed scheme outperforms simple amplify-and-forward (SAF), minimum mean squared error (MMSE) relay, and an existing good scheme of [13] in terms of both SMSE and sum-rate performances.

Since the decentralized structure and the blindness of a large-scale wireless network make it difficult to collect the real-time channel state or other information from random distributed relays, a fundamental question is whether it is feasible to perform the relay selection without this knowledge. In this paper, a Slotted ALOHA based Greedy Relay Selection (SAGRS) scheme is presented. The proposed scheme allows the relays satisfying the user's minimum transmission request to compete for selection by randomly accessing the channel through the slotted ALOHA protocol without the need for the information collection procedure. Moreover, a greedy selection mechanism is introduced with which a user can wait for an even better relay when a suitable one is successfully stored. The optimal access probability of a relay is determined through the utilization of the available relay region, a geographical region consisting of all the relays that satisfy the minimum transmission demand of the user. The average number of the selection slots and the failure probability of the scheme are analyzed in this paper. By simulations, the validation and the effectiveness of the SAGRS scheme are confirmed. With a balance between the selection slots and the instantaneous rate of the selected relay, the proposed scheme outperforms other random access selection schemes.

In the traditional cellular network communication, the cellular user and the base station exchange information through the uplink channel and downlink channel. Meanwhile, device-to-device (D2D) users access the cellular network by reusing the channel resources of the cellular users. However, when cellular user channel conditions are poor, not only D2D user cannot reuse its channel resources to access the network, but also cellular user's communication needs cannot be met. To solve this problem, we introduced a novelty D2D communication mechanism in the downlink, which D2D transmitter users as half-duplex (HD) relays to assist the downlink transmission of cellular users with reusing corresponding spectrum. The optimization goal of the system is to make the cellular users in the bad channel state meet the minimum transmission rate requirement and at the same time maximize the throughput of the D2D users. In addition, i for the purpose of improving the efficiency of relay transmission, we use two-antenna architecture of D2D relay to enable receive and transmit signals at the same time. Then we optimized power of base station and D2D relay separately with consideration of backhaul interference caused by two-antenna architectures. The simulation results show that the proposed HD relay strategyis superior to existing HD and full-duplex (FD) models in the aspects of system throughput and power efficiency.
In this paper, we investigate an energy-efficient resource allocation problem in a two-way relay (TWR) network consisting of multiple user pairs and an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay. As the users and relay have individual energy efficiencies (EE), we formulate a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP). A single-objective optimization problem (SOOP) of the MOOP is introduced using a weighted-sum method, which achieves a single Pareto optimal point of the MOOP. To derive the algorithm for the SOOP, we propose a more tractable equivalent problem using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the SOOP, which guarantees convergence at the local optimal points. The proposed equivalent problem can be efficiently solved by the proposed iterative algorithm. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in achieving the optimal EE in multi-user AF TWR networks.
In LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) networks, Relay nodes (RN) are used to improve the system coverage. However, it also brings new kind of interference to users which reduces the system performance. In this paper, we use an optimization relay node deployment to reduce the interference as much as possible and resource allocation to improve the user throughput. Our simulation results show our method is able to improve the user SINR and throughput.

We propose methods of linear transceiver design for two different power constraints, sum relay power constraint and per relay power constraint, which determine signal processing matrices such as base station (BS) transmitter, relay precoders and user receivers to minimize sum mean square error (SMSE) for multi-relay multi-user (MRMU) networks. However, since the formulated problem is non-convex one which is hard to be solved, we suboptimally solve the problems by defining convex subproblems with some fixed variables. We adopt iterative sequential designs of which each iteration stage corresponds to each subproblem. Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) theorem and SMSE duality are employed as specific methods to solve subproblems. The numerical results verify that the proposed methods provide comparable performance to that of a full relay cooperation bound (FRCB) method while outperforming the simple amplify-and-forward (SAF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) relaying in terms of not only SMSE, but also the sum rate.

In this paper, we investigate joint power allocation and relay selection (PARS) schemes in non-orthogonal cooperative protocol (NOCP) based cognitive relay networks. Generally, NOCP outperforms the orthogonal cooperative protocol (OCP), since it can provide more transmit diversity. However, most existing PARS schemes in cognitive relay networks focus on OCP, which are not suitable for NOCP. In the context of NOCP, we first derive the joint constraints of transmit power limit for secondary user (SU) and interference constraint for primary user (PU). Then we formulate optimization problems under the aforementioned constraints to maximize the capacity of SU in amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) modes, respectively. Correspondingly, we derive the closed form solutions with respect to different parameters. Numerical results are provided to verify the performance improvement of the proposed PARS schemes.
