  • Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of 3 dimensional contoured pillow through analyzing contact pressure and to suggest its design guidelines through analyzing the posture of head and neck area. Background: The quality of sleep is a very important factor closely related with human's health. To improve the quality of sleep, the verification of design factors affecting the posture of the head and neck is needed, and a pillow design that can induce proper posture is required. Method: This study measured the contact pressures of the two reference groups (bead and cotton pillows) as a method to evaluate the design effectiveness of the contoured pillow. This study proposed 3-dimensional design guidelines by drawing anthropometry (head length) affecting cervical curvature angle (CCA) through the measurement of the participants' cervical curvature angles. Results: In the design effectiveness evaluation, the contact pressure of cervical region was higher than that of a reference group (cotton pillow), and contract area increased, and contract pressure decreased in the shape distributing the occipital region's body pressure. This study proposed pillow's cervical supporting height by percentile of a head length [head length (%tile) (cervical supporting height) affecting the posture of the head and neck: 14.6cm (5%tile) (6.2cm), 15.5cm (25%tile) (6.7cm), 16.4cm (50%tile) (7.1cm), and 19.3cm (75%tile) (8.9cm)]. Conclusion: This study confirmed the contoured pillow's design effectiveness maintaining cervical angle comfortable to sleep with the shape supporting the cervical vertebrae and by reducing the contact load of the occipital region. Also, this study proposed pillow design guidelines based on the 3-dimensional contoured pillow design effectiveness, through which the study laid the foundation for pillow design in a systematic method. Application: The results of this study are expected to be utilized as the basis data by which the optimum pillow type and pillow design according to main percentile can be standardized.

Method: The study was conducted during October 2008, and participants were 110 female nursing students. Axillary temperatures were taken with glass mercury thermometers for 5, 7 and 10 minutes. Tympanic temperatures were taken with Infrared Thermometer IRT 4520 on both ears, twice at a 5-second interval. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 12.0 program. Results: In the 1st measurement, the mean for right tympanic temperatures ($0.06^{\circ}C$) and for left ($0.03^{\circ}C$) were significantly higher than the 2nd. A comparison of mean temperatures for right and left, showed that the mean for the left side on the 1st measurement was significantly higher ($0.01^{\circ}C$) than the right. Also the temperature on left side in the 2nd measurement was higher ($0.04^{\circ}C$) than the right 2nd, but not significantly higher. The mean temperature for right and left tympanic on 1 st and 2nd measurements were significantly higher than axilla for 5 minutes ($0.58^{\circ}C$), for 7 minutes ($0.52^{\circ}C$), and for 10 minutes ($0.43^{\circ}C$). The tympanic temperature was the most closely correlated with the axillary temperature at 10 minutes. Conclusion: Findings indicate that measurement of tympanic temperature is a useful alternative to axillary temperature taken for 10 minutes.

  • This paper is the result of investigation of ONO PPSM(ONO PORTABLE SLIP METER) by way of experiment to see the validity as a slip meter, ONO PPSM is a portable slip meter which was made up for the weak points of O-Y PSM(ONO-YOSHIOKA PULL SLIP METER) which takes an accurate measurement of the slip resistance but very heavy and hard to operate. In order to know the stability of the measurement result of ONO PPSM, we measured the slip resistance against 4 different kind of floor materials. As a result of this, we found out that the coefficient of variability of CSR' is less than 0.05. Also, we verified the relation between CSR' and CSR. more specifically by doing the slip test against 7 different kinds of inorganic matter floor materials. We increased the usability of ONO PPSM as a slip meter by suggesting the method of sharing the evaluation index of slip of CSR' and C.S.R.
