  • Background: Excessive exposure to the sun during childhood is strongly associated with the development of skin cancer in the future. The only way to prevent the development of skin cancer is to protect against ultraviolet radiation, which can be achieved through strategic awareness during childhood and adolescence. Objective. The aim of this work was to evaluate the impact of educational activities for rural and urban students to promote the use of sunscreens and prevent skin cancer. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out with students (9-12 years) of rural (n=70) and urban (n=70) schools in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The educational interventions were lectures and games. The impact of this strategy was evaluated through the application of a questionnaire before and after the interventions. Results: Before the intervention, it was found around 50% of rural and urban students were not aware of the damage caused by sun exposure, often exposing themselves to UV radiation without use sunscreen ( ~ 25 %) and at the most critical times of the day/year. After the lectures we observed an improvement in the behavior of the students with regard to sun exposure and knowledge about skin cancer. Conclusions: The results of this study emphasize the importance of prevention strategies for skin cancer and promoting the use of sunscreens based educational strategies. The interventions were of great value in relation to disseminating knowledge on the subject.

  • Purpose: Definitive radiotherapy remains a primary treatment option for early stage glottic cancer. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) has emerged as the standard treatment technique for advanced head and neck cancers, whereas three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) has remained standard for early glottic cancers. We used the National Cancer Database (NCDB) to identify predictors of IMRT use and effect on outcome in these patients. Materials and Methods: We queried the NCDB from 2004-2015 for squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx staged Tis-T2N0 treated with radiation alone. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors of IMRT. Cox regression was used to identify factors predictive of overall survival. Propensity matching was conducted to account for indication bias. Results: We identified 15,627 patients, of which 11% received IMRT. IMRT use rose from 2% in 2004 to 16% in 2015. Predictors of IMRT include: increased comorbidity, T2 stage, urban location, chemotherapy, treatment at an academic center, and later treatment year. Predictors of improved survival were female gender, higher income, lower stage, no chemotherapy, academic facility, and more remote year. There was no difference in survival between 3D-CRT and IMRT across all stages. Conclusions: The rate of IMRT use for early stage glottic laryngeal cancer has increased over time. There was no difference in outcome in patients receiving IMRT versus 3D-CRT across the cohort.

  • In order to clarify the influence of the change of urban surface albedo on mesoscale meteorological factors during the summertime, numerical experiments with various albedo of urban surface were carried out. Numerical model used in this study is PSU/NCAR MM5 V3.6. As a result of the numerical simulation intended of Busan assumed the increase of albedo of roofs, buildings, or roads, the increase of albedo can make decrease radiation effect of surface, so that it caused drops in ambient air temperature from $0.5^{\circ}C$ to $1^{\circ}C$ on the average, and the downtown of Busan formed along the trough presented a substantial drop in ambient air temperature about $1.5^{\circ}C$. Modeling studies suggest the increased surface albedo in urban area can reduce surface and air temperatures near the ground and affect related meteorological parameters such as winds and the depth of the mixed boundary layer.

  • Advanced radiation applications have been widely used and extended to many fields. As a result of this fact, choosing an appropriate shielding material based on the radiation application has become vital. In this regard, the integration of elements into polymer composites has been investigated and contributed to the quantity and quality of radiation shielding materials. This study reports photon attenuation parameters and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of a novel polymer composite prepared with a matrix reinforced with three different proportions (5, 10, and 15 wt%) of niobium content. Addition of Nb dopant improves both photon attenuation and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness for the investigated composites. Therefore, Nb(15%) polymer composite with highest concentration has been found to be the best absorber for ionizing and non-ionizing radiations. Consequently, the performed analyzes provide evidences that the prepared Nb-reinforced polymer composite could be effectively used as photon radiation attenuator and electromagnetic shielding material.

  • A model for radiological dose assessment in an urban environment, METRO-K has been developed. Characteristics of the model are as follows ; 1) mathematical structures are simple (i.e. simplified input parameters) and easy to understand due to get the results by analytical methods using experimental and empirical data, 2) complex urban environment can easily be made up using only 5 types of basic surfaces, 3) various remediation measures can be applied to different surfaces by evaluating the exposure doses contributing from each contamination surface. Exposure doses contributing from each contamination surface at a particular location of a receptor were evaluated using the data library of kerma values as a function of gamma energy and contamination surface. A kerma data library was prepared fur 7 representative types of Korean urban buildings by extending those data given for 4 representative types of European urban buildings. Initial input data are daily radionuclide concentration in air and precipitation, and fraction of chemical type. Final outputs are absorbed dose rate in air contributing from the basic surfaces as a function of time following a radionuclide deposition, and exposure dose rate contributing from various surfaces constituting the urban environment at a particular location of a receptor. As the result of a contaminative scenario for an apartment built-up area, exposure dose rates show a distinct difference for surrounding environment as well as locations of a receptor.

  • Land surface temperature (LST) for large areas can only be derived from surface-leaving radiation measured by satellite sensors. These measurements represent the integrated effect of the surface and are superior to point measurements on the ground, e.g. in Urban Heat Island. ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) is an imaging instrument that is flying on the NASA's Terra satellite launched in December 1999. ASTER acquires 14 spectral bands and can be used to obtain detailed datas of land surface temperature, emissivity, reflectance and elevation. Spatial resolution of 90m of TIR channels of ASTER is useful when we analyze the spatial variations of surface heat fluxes in urban areas. The purpose of this study is to extract the LST using ASTER TIR channels.

  • In this paper, an array antenna is designed far base station of a street micro-cell in urban areas. It has a rectangular radiation pattern. The current distribution of the array is decided by using a modified Woodward-Lawson sampling pattern synthesis method. To confirm the realization of the array antenna with rectangular pattern, 12 array antenna with a planar type monopole fed by stripline is fabricated and measured. In the results of the measured values, H-plane pattern of the antenna nearly yields a rectangular radiation pattern.

  • KOMPSAT-2 was successively launched on July 28,06. She carries Fine Spatial Resolution Sensor with three channels. It is 4m monochromatic and 1m panchromatic. The main purposes would derive fine urban map and digital elevation model(DEM).Therefore we extend to coastal environment monitoring using the adjacent effect of radiation due to an interaction of radiation between heterogeneous surface and atmosphere. With data analysis of ASTER on TERA, which is 15m resolution in visible and near infrared wavelengths, we found atmospheric aerosols were always large. Note that data analysis was limited in Nagoya bay, Lake Tahoe, California & La Pozuelos, La Picasa, Argentina. Thus this time we expect data analyses around isolated island and peninsula in west and south coast of Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand relation of meteorological elements of air temperature, relative humidity and vapor pressure of four cities with Daegu. The followings are main results from this study. 1) There is very high correlation of meteorological elements according to distance between city and city. 2) In case of seaside town at Pohang, there were little changes than other cities for temperature, humidity and vapor pressure. 3) It was analysed stable and similar diurnal variation in water vapor pressure than air temperature and relative humidity at all observation site.
