Urban traditional housing is a type of the urban housing which have developed by itself from the traditional vernacular houses and it has continued with a traditional feature in the westernization and modernization affection of Korea. Also, the urban traditional housing is still one of the housing in the present and it makes a urban village with a rich culture benefit and fresh natural environment. The purpose of this study is to analyze the periodical characteristics of urban traditional house in korea's provincial town Gyeongju. The local range is Hwang-Nam Hanok Conservation Area in Gyeongju and the period range is 1874~2000s. So the first period from 1874 to 1909, the second period is 1910 to 1945, the third period is 1946 to 1969, the fourth period is 1970s, and the fifth period is since the 1980s. This classification will be considered of the social phenomenon at the time. The total number of target houses are 8 houses. They were analyzed by layout, floor plan, and elevation characteristics of urban traditional house. For structure of this study, Chapter 1, establishes the goal and range of study. Chapter 2, 3, examines distinctions of urban traditional house with traditional house, and meaning of urban traditional house, and transition of urban traditional house. Chapter 4, establishes formality to analysis, and performed from plan to elevation analysis, observation survey, and interview through door-to-door survey, and clarifies trend and characteristic of urban traditional house's change by integrating the results, and Chapter 5, is results integrating the above studies.
The purposes of this study were to reevaluate urban traditional houses and to propose direction for the conservation and utilization of urban traditional houses in a way of maintaining historical landscape rather than the value of urban traditional houses as components in expanded urban structure. For these purposes, we identified the characteristics of conservation and utilization of urban traditional houses by representative cases and analyzing them exhaustively, and suggested problems in the cinservation and utilization of traditional houses and solution for them. The current conservation system for Urban Traditional House in the Bukchon area is applied to non-residential Urban Traditional House differently according to the owner's consciousness of conservation because there is no support system for non-residential Urban Traditional House. Accordingly, there should be standardized criteria to maintain the landscape of the Bukchon area in terms of beauty formed by the elevation of Urban Traditional House and the continuity of roofs while accommodating various functions. As in total conservation or partial conservation, the interior remodeling of individual houses may be allowed but the three-dimensional external appearance composed of the outer walls, fences and roofs of Korean-style houses should be repaired and improved in a way of maintaining the image. In order to utilize Urban Traditional House in the Bukchon area, plans should be made in consideration of its location, historicity and tradition. We may expect the utilization of traditional cultural facilities and their surrounding areas as alternative cultural spaces. Such use of individual Urban Traditional House should be extended by linearly and areally and suggest the direction of conservation and utilization.
The purpose of this paper is to examine their degree of housing satisfaction in Gyeongju, focused on indoor environment of urban traditional houses. Mostly built during time period from 1930's to 1980's in Seoak-dong, Bomun-dong, Namsan-dong, Sajeong-dong, and Hwangnam-dong, Gyeongju' Hanok reveals the evolutionary development to fit into the urban settlement. Urban traditional house has important meaning as a type of residence maintaining tradition of Korean residential culture, and it is the study's first goal to derive developable element by analyzing the characteristics of urban traditional house focusing on such a feature. Residents in 5 districts in Gyeongju were classified and the self-administered questionnaires were provided to them. 187 papers were used for final analysis. The data for general trend of satisfaction was seek for after its average and standard variation were calculated.
In the meantime, the study of traditional and contemporary house had been produced so many achievements in korea, but modern house is yet to be solved, Accordingly, It is necessary to develop and present the basic research data in order to build up an objective study for urban house in the modern age(1910-1945), Following to a study on the foreigner's house in grid-type settlement of Open Ports, in this research is to investigate and analyze modern houses of urban areas in korean inland, and then clarify types and changes of them. In the first year($1995{\sim}96$), the modern houses of Central Inland Districts(arrounding river Kumgang)-Kunsan kanggyong Puyo Kongju Pugang Chongju were investigated by the layout of room, the construction and materials, the design and style, etc. In the second year($1996{\sim}97$), the modern houses of Open Market(開市場)-Seoul Taegu Kwangju Taejon Chonju were conducted to investigate as above. The traditional house transformed by differentiation and addition of room(kan), the various types were respectively adopted for the korean reforming and western cultural house. In the layout of room, the types of plan were gradually concentrated from the single wings of korean traditional house. The korean traditional house was later improved through the introduction of entrance, corridor, and internal toilet/bathroom. But the korean under-floor heating system(andal) and a series of three rooms had been entirely maintained, composed of master bedroom/living room(daechung)/room. And the traditional town house with shop and storage, being built closely to each other and walled up both sides, it had taken gradually the extensive characteristics in itself. By the displacement of shop/dwelling/ storage. the various types were respectively adopted for the separated, multi-storied, and complex type. The type of them was gradually changed to the narrow and linear form. And so with the stockpile of fundamental datas about modern houses in korean urban areas, we expect these results contribute to the knowledge of the spatial characteristics of urban house at present which are required to the understanding of transition as well as types.
This study is to describe the changes of spatial structure of Korean traditional housing in urban context with the following preconditions. Firstly, Chosun Hanyang's urban housing should be classified as it's own type. Secondly, Chosun's traditional housing accomplishes a complete urban housing type in Japanese colonial period through the stream of time. And the purpose of this study is as followings. First is to find out the process of changes of urban housing in urban context from the latter period of Chosun Dynasty to 1960's. Second is to find out the origin of spatial structure of urban house which is being kept throughout the above changes. Third is to find out the unique characteristics of urban house and the fundamental differences with folk houses in province.
The new apartments has been rapidly built through the outskirts of Cheong-ju city since the latter half of 1980's. So, the population decreased in Seong-an dong and Jung-ang dong which are located in traditional urban area of Cheong-ju. Also, residential areas became obsolete and residential buildings happened to be vacant and empty. For urban rehabilitation, the city authorities will construct the high-rise complex housings with stores in the traditional urban area. We have doubts about whether the rapid change of new housing construction is right or not. Therefore, It is necessary to give a correct diagnosis of the present state from urban atrophy, keeping this area sustainable with traditionality and locality. This study is to examine and analysis in detail distribution patterns and habitable floor area by house types in Seong-an dong and Jung-ang dong which are located in traditional urban area of Cheong-ju. The result are as follows; the residential buildings as the 2,680 houses(including detached and apartment houses) and the 804 shop houses are distributed with 3,484(67%) of the whole 5,183 buildings and form 28percent of the whole floor areas. A distribution and area ratio of houses to shop houses is irrespectively about 76 : 24percent. The average floor area is represented with $66m^2$/household and $28.5m^2$/person. It shows that a hollowing out of urban area has caused the surplus of residential buildings and floor areas.
Recently, many urban traditional houses have been replaced by villas and apartments for the inconvenience of lifestyle. The aim of this study is to survey the present distribution condition, research the extension and alteration, focused on Korean urban traditional houses in Cheongju which is the old city in an inland area, and inquire into the behavior patterns of an aged living alone livelihood and a large household. As a result, in the typical 'ㄱ' types of central inland houses, all the rear and side parts are nearly extended except facades facing court, while the detached houses for an aged living alones and tenants have enlarged rooms, kitchen and 'Daecheong' within the existing wooden framework. We could grasp the enlargement of room, 'Daecheong', corridor, and storage in the layout of the existing house. There are so many alterations such as the stand-up kitchen and a water closet. A new extension on an old house was intensely built for tenants.
To effectively use Building Information Modelling (BIM) dealing with semantic information including the entities of building components, the information about building components should be standardized. Like standardized modern buildings. in the past, Korean traditional houses were built according to strict procedures and formats. Therefore, if the Korean traditional house are modelled by using BIM,. not only the Korean traditional house of good quality will be built quickly and cheaply, but also spaces in the existing Korean traditional house will be easily analyzed. However, when analyzing spaces of the Korean traditional house using Space Syntax, some problems are caused in dividing outdoor space such as yard with unclear boundaries, unlike indoor space with clear boundaries surrounded by walls. These comes from the fact that researchers have subjectively divided a space in the house into convex spaces as units for Space Syntax analysis. Therefore, this study aims to develop an objective and rational spatial subdivision technique for Space Syntax analysis of a Korean traditional house modelled by using BIM. We could objectively and reasonably divide a Korean traditional house space into convex spaces by recognizing the building components in the house modelled in the form of Industry Foundation Classes(IFC). Depending on the connection of convex spaces allocated in the spatial subdivision technique, j-graph in Space Syntax could be drawn and the measurements of spatial configurations could be determinded. Through the developed technique, the social properties including the cultural and philosophical aspects of Korean people was identified by measuring the spatial configurations of Korean traditional house. The developed technique will serve as useful means to help architects to find an appropriate purpose of each space for sustainable architecture on the basis of the spatial and social relationships in buildings or urban systems.
Ikseon-Dong 166 is one of the traditional urban resident area developed during 1930's. The purpose of this research is to analyze the structural relationship between a conventional housing unit plans and modern block plans based on orthogonal geometry. To fully explore the selling point of the new urban development, the planner or real estate developer in private sector did not abandon or compromise the conventional house layouts, consists of single layer of rooms keeping the main room facing south. This study concludes the following factors connecting the urban and architectural plans. Oblong block plans following east-west direction did not allow the southern exposure of courtyard and main room, which was the absolute requirement for traditional house units, the longer side of block plan followed north-south direction as a result. Considering the possibility of rent, having entrance at the east or west side of individual site enables two separate household maintain their spatial privacy. In addition to the factors mentioned above, when the blocks are to be divided into individual addresses, north-south oblong block plans maintained the length to face the front road minimum while the southern exposure maximized. These factors explains why the private developers maintained their blocks elongated to north-south direction when the block plans laied out by public sectors which did not care that much of southern exposure show random orientation in the view point of solar exposure.
"Urban traditional housing" means a type of urban housing which retains characteristics of traditional Korean houses for ordinary people. It is a form of housing created in the process in which traditional Korean ways of life are applied to swift modernization. In Korea's traditional housing, the "court" functioned as a living space that promoted family bonding. The space of the court still remains in the urban traditional housing. However, rapid popularization of the westernized housing form, i.e., apartments, resulted in standardization and westernization of our housing and living patterns, and as a result, the court in urban traditional housing came to lose its original meaning. The objects of this study are residents of urban traditional housing. By studying them, this research aims, firstly, to understand the meaning of the inner court, secondly to analyze correlation between the residents' consciousness of the inner court and their use of the space, and ultimately to find various possible forms of our future housing. For this research, twenty six houses in the Gahoe-dong area in which urban traditional houses are densely built up were investigated. According to the result of this research, the inner court in current urban traditional housing is a space existing inside a house but directly exposed to outer air at the same time. It is a private but shared space. It contributes to forming a pleasant atmosphere by facilitating ventilation and providing sunlight. In addition, it is a living space that actively reflects the Korean living style that values family life.
