  • The systematic data management system in the area of river flow analysis has not yet constructed, even though the need is evident due to the complicated process of tremendous input/output data in the modeling study and the importance of visualization of spatial flow variation. The objectives of this study are to suggest the method for analysis of changing river sections affecting ecological habitat characteristics. The effects of ecological habitat characteristics are assessed with respect to changing river sections. A GIS special analysis is created representing in the past section of Nonsan-river using historical data. Topographic surfaces are subject to erosional and depositional forces that a specific set of surface characteristics unique to elevation data. GIS spatial analyst is used to generate surface grids from historical point data. Using the GIS spatial analyst can be constructed sections for anywhere of river. The change of depth between 1979 and 1988, the left bank elevations of a river are increased about 1.5m. But the right bank elevations of a river are decreased about 2.3m caused by erosion. In addition, the change of spatial between 1988 and 2002, the regions of a river from upper stream to midstream are decreased the elevation. But the downstream regions are increased the elevation. These changes are analyzed in GIS program to assess methods for affecting ecological habitat.

  • This paper identifies public transit-poors and derives spatial characteristics of the poors' distribution in an urban area by utilizing buffering analysis of geographic information systems and remote sensing techniques in the case of Daegu metropolitan city. Since special attention is given to elderlies, this study assigns three hundred meter buffer from bus/subway station as service boundary for elderlies. The results of this study tell us that 1) the transit-poors are concentrated on suburban and rural regions, 2) high proportions of the transit poors are elderlies with spatial variations in many regions, 3) the main housing type of the transit-poors is single detached house. We expect that this study can contribute to build an effective policy-making by showing essential technical processes and methods in identifying policy-need groups and their characteristics of spatial distribution.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the conservation and restoration areas for sustainable stream management by reflecting the ecological health, cultural characteristics, and the citizens' needs for stream uses. Therefore, we extended spatial ranges of stream evaluation to riparian areas in addition to stream sections. The evaluation indexes are stream naturalness, availability, biota assessment, and riparian characteristics such as land uses and legally protected areas. The grading system was unified with five classes. The spatial evaluation units for stream section are classified as right and left for laterally and 500m for longitudinally. For riparian areas, 30m and 100m of distance from the edge of stream are applied as spatial evaluation units. The six types of stream sections for management are conservation sections(priority/general) and restoration sections(priority/general) for ecological landscape and core and general sections for cultural landscape. The established system for evaluation and designating areas for stream management was applied to Jeonjucheon and Samcheon in Jeonju-si, and the conservation and restoration areas were designated reflecting the characteristics of urban and non-urban areas and left and right of stream sections. The results of this study will provide detailed guidelines for designating stream sections and practical management strategies for sustainable urban stream management.

  • This study investigated the characteristics of spatial expansion/centralization and the spatial structural change of urban. The data used in analysis were urban population, employment, building floor area, and land price. The analysis was performed for the data of 1995, 2000, and 2005 during 10 years after 1995. The method of research was as follows; The movement of mean center and standard distance/standard deviation ellipse was estimated to investigate the urban growth change. The result of Moran's I analysis showed a clustered pattern, not a dispersed pattern, however; the effect was not significant. The town area requires the well-ordered urban planning such as land use. The contours map demonstrates that a monopole structure was generally transformed into a multicentralization structure. The development of mutural connection axis among central street roads was fragile.

  • In contemporary urban space, the identify is absent because of the object-oriented plans that ignore the context of urban space, and the ignorance of the regional characteristics and the historicity of places. Due to this reason, urban space lost its unique characteristics and becomes a mismatch with its surroundings. To solve these problems, the ideological trend of post-modernism emerged and new spatial paradigm rose based on the contextual concept to go with this trend. This contextual concept should be considered more importantly in the public space with discontinuous many and unspecified behavioral patterns. The components of space do not exist independently with individual identity. They should be considered based on a holistic view formed by the relations among elements and the establishment of those relations, and through this, correct identity can be established. Thus, this paper aims to analyze the context of spatial components through new contextual views on public spaces and study the expressional characteristics unveiled between these relations.

  • As aging society progresses, it is necessary to establish a housing standard that provides a healthy, safe, and convenient environment for the elderly. The objective of the study is to propose a housing space standard that is geared towards elderly living in the urban area. Three steps were taken to attain the objective. First, characteristics of housing preference, spatial usage and furniture preference of the elderly were attained through a survey. The survey was conducted targeting the respondents of the ages 60 to 79 living in three different administrative districts in Seoul. Second, the required floor space to perform individual specific behavior using anthropometric dimension of the elderly was investigated by literature review. Lastly, floor space of each space is suggested combining each area for individual specific behavior which reflects characteristics of housing preference and spatial usage. The results of the research as follows. A bedroom was planned, which includes the function of receiving guests by giving the area for the placement of a sofa. The space for the use of dinning table for two person was planned in the kitchen and The space for the behavior of showering on a chair was planned in a bathroom. Lastly, the space for the behavior of taking off shoes on a chair was considered in the entrance area. Consequently, $35.4m^2$ is suggested as the necessary floor space for the elderly housing considering the characteristics of the elderly in urban area. However, because of space composition and space for accessibility, the additional space should be considered to plan the elderly housing.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the usage characteristics and the role of spatial and social psychology of open spaces in urban neighborhoods. The survey for this study was conducted on 318 residents in Gyungsan. For analysis, the frequencies and means were calculated, the chi-square test, t-test, and analysis of variance were performed. Survey results revealed that, first, not only the preferred open space type but also the usage characteristics by gender were different. The tendency for males was to visit open spaces to exercise and to stay for longer than one hour. However, the females visited open spaces to care for their children and meet friends or neighbors. They also visited more often than males but stayed for a shorter time. Second, females tended to consider the open space as a place for rest and leisure. Females valued the social psychology aspects of the open space function. Third, regarding the spacial role of open space in urban neighborhoods, study participants believed that the waterside parks improve the quality of life, but were concerned for the safety of children. Considering the social psychology role of open spaces, study participants regarded the waterside parks as improving emotional health. Particularly, they believed the waterside parks played a greater role in daily life as a place for meeting, resting, and leisure than other open space types such as playground, children's parks, and sport parks.

  • For the sake of the Transit-Oriented Development that has been prominent recently, an analysis of the spatial structures of transit centers, above all, should be carried out at a local level. This study, thus, analyzes the spatial structures of subway influence areas by applying a Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model to individual parcels. As a result of the validity analysis of the model, it has turned out that the subway influence areas have different characteristics respectively, and there is spatial heterogeneity even in the same single area. Also, the result of the comparison among models has proved that the GWR model is more adequate than the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) model and $R^2$ has been also increased in the GWR model. Then, the results have been mapped by means of the GIS, which have made it possible to understand the spatial structures at a local level. If the Transit-Oriented Development is fulfilled in consideration of the spatial structural characteristics of the subway influence areas drawn respectively from the model analysis, it will be helpful in adopting effective policies.

  • New urbanism is a school of urban development that combines residential, commercial, and civic land uses in a dense urban fabric of carefully prescribed form. Its advocates claim that New Urbanist developments are superior to prevailing urban development patterns on social and environmental sustainability. Its critics, however, argue that New Urbanism developments do not measure up to the social and environmental ideals and are, in some cases, just another form of urban sprawl. The goal of this study is to evaluate various criticisms of New Urbanist communities. This paper used empirical evidence to determine the performance of New Urbanist developments on the broader spatial and social context as opposed to the internal characteristics of the communities using GIS indicators. The results showed that the communities did not meet conventional criteria for New Urbanist ideals.
