  • In this paper, the capacity of VSG-CDMA system supporting multi-media service in the reverse link is analyzed by considering the two models according to the power control and user distribution. In analysis model I, assuming perfect power control and uniform distribution of users, the equation of blocking probability is calculated and the maximum number of voice and data user is derived in accordance with 1 % blocking probability. In analysis model II, it is analyzed by assuming power control error and non-uniform distribution of users. The result of analysis model I means the upper bound of system capacity in the 5 MHz wideband VSG-CDMA system, and the result of analysis model II shows the lower bound of system capacity. Also, the improved plan of performance for VSG-CDMA system is suggested by the analyzed result according to data activity and the value of $E_b/N_o$ in model II.

  • Limit analysis of upper and lower bound solutions has been well developed to provide the stability numbers for shallow tunnels in cohesive soil ($c_u$ material), cohesive-frictional soil (c'-$\phi$' material) and cohesionless soil ($\phi$'material). However, an extension of these methods to relatively deep circular tunnels in the cohesionless soil has been explored rarely to date. For this reason, the closed-form analytical solutions including lower bound solution based on the stress discontinuity concept and upper bound solution based on the kinematically admissible failure mechanism were proposed for assessing tunnel collapse load in this study. Consequently, the tunnel collapse load from those solutions was compared with both the finite element analysis and the previous analytical bound solutions and shown to be in good agreement with the FE results, in particular with the FE soil elements located on the horizontal tunnel axis.

  • Some bounds for anisotropic torsional rigidity with one plane of elastic symmetry perpendicular to the axis of the beam are derived by making use of the isoperimetric inequalities, complementary variational principles, and the maximum principle. Upper and lower bounds are obtained by applying the isoperimetric inequalities. While the upper bound investigated by the variational principles and maximum principle. The analysis is patterned after the work of Payne and Weinbeger [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 2(1961). pp. 210-216].

  • Studies for tube spin forming have been implemented restrictively compared to spinning process, because of the complex of deformation mechanism. Especially there were not many studies by using FEM(Finite Element Method) for overcoming restriction of upper bound method. In this paper, the tube spinning process is analyzed to produce cylindrical body made by titanium alloy. In analysis, processing parameters was obtained by using upper bound method to consider material properties of titanium alloy and finite element analysis was implemented to investigate the flatness and the elongation of the titanium alloy workpiece by using ABAQUS code. The independent variables are ; material properties of workpiece, angles of roller, reduction of diameter. Three variables, two angles of roller and reduction of diameter are optimized by using the upper bound method. In this method, we can estimate the workable power, working force and reduction of diameter, and also the flatness and the elongation of workpiece by the finite elements analysis using ABAQUS/standard. The results indicates that these variables play a critical factors of spinning process for the titanium alloy and the optimum values of these variables.

  • Employing non-associated flow rule and Power-Law failure criterion, the failure mechanisms of tunnel roof in homogeneous and layered soils are studied in present analysis. From the viewpoint of energy, limit analysis upper bound theorem and variation principle are introduced to study the influence of dilatancy on the collapse mechanism of rectangular tunnel considering effects of supporting force and seepage force. Through calculation, the collapsing curve expressions of rectangular tunnel which are excavated in homogeneous soil and layered soils respectively are derived. The accuracy of this work is verified by comparing with the existing research results. The collapsing surface shapes with different dilatancy coefficients are draw out and the influence of dilatancy coefficient on possible collapsing range is analyzed. The results show that, in homogeneous soil, the potential collapsing range decreases with the decrease of the dilatancy coefficient. In layered soils, the total height and the width on the layered position of possible collapsing block increase and the width of the falling block on tunnel roof decrease when only the upper soil's dilatancy coefficient decrease. When only the lower soil's dilatancy coefficient decrease or both layers' dilatancy coefficients decrease, the range of the potential collapsing block reduces.

  • In this paper we find an explicit form of upper bound of Hausdorff distance between given cubic spline curve and its quadratic spline approximation. As an application the approximation of offset curve of cubic spline curve is presented using our explicit error analysis. The offset curve of quadratic spline curve is exact rational spline curve of degree six, which is also an approximation of the offset curve of cubic spline curve.

  • In this paper we approximate a cylindrical helix by bi-conic and bi-quadratic Bezier curves. Each approximation method is $G^1$ end-points interpolation of the helix. We present a sharp upper bound of the Hausdorff distance between the helix and each approximation curve. We also show that the error bound has the approximation order three and monotone increases as the length of the helix increases. As an illustration we give some numerical examples.

  • In this paper, the frozen time approach is used to analyze the nonlinear system with time varying parameter. Using the extended linearization, we propose two analytical methods that compute an upper bound of the Euclidean norm of the difference between state variable and equilibrium point of the given system. The propertise of the two methods are discussed with simple examples.

  • Business managers are often required to use LP problems to deal with uncertainty inherent in decision making due to rapid changes in today's business environments. Uncertain parameters can be easily formulated in the two-stage stochastic LP problems. However, since solution methods are complex and time-consuming, a common approach has been to use modified formulations to provide upper and lower bounds on the two-stage stochastic LP problem. One approach is to use an expected value problem, which provides upper and lower bounds. Another approach is to use “walt-and-see” problem to provide upper and lower bounds. The objective of this paper is to propose a modified approach of “wait-and-see” problem to provide an upper bound and to compare the relative error of optimal value with various upper and lower bounds. A computing experiment is implemented to show the relative error of optimal value with various upper and lower bounds and computing times.

  • A new kinematically admissible velocity field for a generalized three-dimensional flow is introduced, in which the flow is bounded by an analytic die-profile function. Then, by applying the upper-bound method th the velocity field, the flow patterns as the upper-bound method are obtained. Extrusion of elliptic sections from round billets is chosen as a computational example. Computation and experiments are carried out for work-hardening material such as aluminum alloy 2024. In order to visualize the plastic flow, the grid marking technique is employed. The theoretical predictions both in extrusion load and deformed pattern are in good agreement with the experimental data.
