The major objective of this study is to analyze the water balance of the Keumgang Estuary Reservoir in the Keum River basin. This basin is one of the catchment area which water utilization is very complicated. For the study of this area, this paper is to evaluate the monthly river-inflow of the Keumgang Estuary Resorvoir. Here, two approach methods are proposed which can take care of the natural and the low flow. The results are as follows. The natural flow at the Keumgang Estuary Reservoir during the wet season was decreased to 8.4% and increased from 0.4% to 17.6% during the dry season by the effects of Deachung Reservoir at the upper basin. The monthly fluctuation of the low flow during My-June varies to a great extent, when large amounts of irrigation water are required.
Spatial and temporal distributions of zooplankton were measured in an oligotrophic pumped storage-type hydroelectric reservoir which was composed of two reservoirs exchanging water daily, with water going up at night and going down during the day. Repetitive diel disturbance of the water column can be a unique feature of this reservoir system. Chl-${\alpha}$ concentration was highest in the early winter season. Phytoplankton density was lower in summer monsoon due to high flushing rate on rainy days. The zooplankton density was higher in the smaller upper reservoir possibly due to lower fish density in the upper reservoir. In the seasonal variation a time gap was observed between the phytoplankton bloom and the zooplankton bloom (particularly a rotifer, Keratella cochlearis). It is likely to that Keratella production is partially supported by heterotrophic food sources than phytoplankton. The dominance of a mixotrophic dinoflagellate (Peridinium bipes f. ocultatum) might have complicated the trophic relationship between phytoplankton and zooplankton. Our results provide some ecological information of zooplankton community in a highly disturbed alpine reservoir ecosystem relying on mostly allochthonous organic matter.
Distributions of water temperature and DO profiles were investigated in Andong Reservoir from 1992 to 2004. Thermal stratification began to form from May of every year. Increasing water temperature of epilimnion, temperature difference between epilimnion and hypolimnion increased until August. Lower oxygen layer was formed at metalimnion from June or July of every year and there were 2 layers depending on each year. The two lower oxygen layers were affected by rainfall and inflow between July and September when thermal stratification was formed. The metalimnetic oxygen minima strongly formed at 2 layers, upper and lower part, when the average rainfall and inflow were ${\geqq}$ 170 mm, ${\geqq}$ 50 $m^3\;sec^{-1}$, respectively. It formed weakly when they were > 400 mm and > 200 $m^3\;sec^{-1}$ for one month. The upper part of low oxygen layers formed on the interface of epilimnion and metalimnion showed larger decreasing rate of DO than temperature and it disappeared around November. The lower part of those farmed on interface of metalimnion and hypolimnion existed until December and disappeared in January, this layer showed larger decreasing rate of temperature than DO. DO increased between the upper and lower part of the low oxygen layers. DO on hypolimnion increased under metalimnion and dramatically decreased near the bottom of the reservoir. Temperature of the inflow during rainy season was similar to that of the reservoir's metalimnion, DO was similar or higher and BOD, COD and SS increased. Density layer caused by turbidity was formed in metalimnion, and turbidity increased under the upper part (oxygen increasing layer) of metalimnetic DO minima layers reaching the maximum at the direct upper part of the lower DO minima layer. The upper part of DO minima layers formed on the interface of epilimnion and metalimnion is related to organic activity on the surface, and the lower part of those was considered to be the result of turbid water inflow to metalimnion during rainy season.
The dynamics of water quality and phytoplankton population had examined by monthly sampling from the upper to the lower part of watergate in an artificial Shihwa Reservoir in which situated near newly cities and incustrial complex on the west coast of Korea from January 1997 to December 1998. Among environmental factors, yearly average concentration of chl-a, TN and TP seemed to eutrophic or hypertrophic conditions that ranged 146.4~245.8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$\ell$, 1.6~2.7 mg N/$\ell$, 258~448 $\mu\textrm{g}$ P/$\ell$, 26.9~80.7 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$\ell$, 1.0~2.4 mgN/$\ell$ and 74~239 $\mu\textrm{g}$P/$\ell$ respectively. Water quality was extremely deteriorated to consistently accumulation into inner reservoir by load of pollutants from autochthonous and allochthonous until early July 1997 after embankment. Water pollution of Shihwa Reservoir was remarkble on the biological condition with largely persistent bloom of phytoplankton and increase rate of standing crops was 2.4/yr. The development trend of phytoplankton in water ecosystem were closely related to increse and decrease of physico-chemical factors and those scale seemed to control by nutrient contents. Inflow of seawater into reservoir to object of repair of water quality. As to see dominant species, composition of those composed to mostly freshwater algae before inflow of seawater such as Selenastrum capricornutum of green algae, cyclotella atomus, C. meneghiniana of diatom and Microcystis spp. of blue-green algae and the other hand brackish algae were dominated after inflow of seawater such as Chaetoceros dicipiens, Skeletonema costatum of diatom, Dinophysis acuminata, Gymnodinium mikimotoi, G. sanguineum, Gyrodinium spirale, Prorocentrum minmum of dinoflagellate and Eutreptiella gymnastica of euglenoid. Moreover, small flagellates including Chroomonas spp. of cryptomonad were abundant throughout the year. The cause of water deterioration during fill of the freshwater were complexly supported with extra and intra parameters. The variation pattern of phytoplankton were related to water temperature and salinity by inflow of seawater based to plentiful nutrients. The dynamics of phytoplankton were assessed to ecosystem that clearly condition of dominant by unique or a few angel species seasonally.
The focus of this study was to quantify the thermal stratification and analyze the relationship between the stratification structure and the tributaries to understand flow variations in the Paldang Reservoir. The vertical distribution of the temperature and density gradients, and the depth and thickness of the thermocline were quantitatively calculated using a lake physics tool (rLakeAnalyzer) and high-frequency monitoring data. Based on a density gradient of 0.2 kg/㎥/m, the thermocline was formed from mid-May to early-September 2019 and the other periods were weakly stratified or mixed. The thickness of the thermocline was developed until 4.7 m and the depth of the thermocline was formed at a depth of 3 - 6 m at the front of the Paldang Reservoir. During the formation of the thermocline, the Namhangang and Gyeongancheon tributaries with relatively high water temperature (low-density) flowed into the upper layer of the reservoir, and the Bukhangang tributary with low water temperature (high-density) mainly affected the lower layer of the reservoir. This is because the density currents were formed due to the difference in the water temperature of the tributaries. The findings of this study may be used for constructing high-frequency monitoring and quantitative data analyses of reservoirs.

This study focused on determining the specific causes and prevention methods of mass fish deaths occurred in five reservoirs (Gagugi, Neupgokgi, Danggokgi, Sagokji, and Hangokji) in Andong-si. For this purpose, a survey of agricultural land and livestock in the upper part of the reservoirs and analysis of water quality in the reservoir irrespective of whether it rains or not were conducted. We attempted to examine the changes in dissolved oxygen (DO) in the surface and bottom layers of reservoirs and changes in DO depending on the amount of livestock compost and time. Based on the above investigations, treatment plans were established to efficiently control the inflow of contaminated water into reservoirs. The rainfall and farmland areas in the upper part of the reservoir were investigated using Google and aviation data provided by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. The current status of livestock farms distributed around the reservoirs was also examined because compost from these farms can flow into the reservoir when it rains. Various water quality parameters, such as phosphate phosphorus (PO4-P) and ammonium nitrogen (NH3-N), were analyzed and compared for each reservoir during the rainy season. Changes in the DO concentration and electrical conductivity (EC) were also observed at the inlet of the reservoir during raining using an automated instrument. In addition, DO was measured until the concentration reached 0 ppm in 10 min by adding livestock compost at various concentrations (0.05%, 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5% by wt.), where the concentration of the livestock compost represents the relative weight of rainwater. The DO concentration in the surface layer of reservoirs was 3.7 to 5.3 ppm, which is sufficient for fish survival. However, the fish could not survive at the bottom layer with DO concentration of 0.0-2.1 ppm. When the livestock compost was 0.3%, DO required 10-19 h to reach 0 ppm. Considering these results, it was confirmed that the DO in the bottom layer of the reservoir could easily change to an anaerobic state within 24 h when the livestock compost in the rainwater exceeds 0.3%. The results show that the direct cause of fish mortality is the inflow of excessive livestock compost into reservoirs during the first rainfall in spring. All the surveyed reservoirs had relatively good topographical features for the inflow of compost generated from livestock farms. This keeps the bottom layer of the reservoir free of oxygen. Therefore, to prevent fish death due to insufficient DO in the reservoir, measures should be undertaken to limit the amount of livestock compost flowing into the reservoir within 0.3%, which has been experimentally determined. As a basic countermeasure, minerals such as limestone, dolomite, and magnesia containing calcium and magnesium should be added to the compost of livestock farms around the reservoir. These minerals have excellent pollutant removal capabilities when sprayed onto the compost. In addition, measures should be taken to prevent fish death according to the characteristics of each reservoir.
This paper is concerned with the actual comparison analysis for the freshening process in the two selected experimental reservoirs. At the deep freshening reservoir, the salinity and depth of the freshwater layer were estimated by simulation technique using the quantitative equation for the two-layered flow structures. First of all, it is shown that the effects of underdrainage conduit in the lower layer were reported more effective for the control of upper layer salinity comparing with the case of no underdrainage conduit. Further the results of computation were later compared with the real observed values and the relating parameters of the salt-balance equation are conformed even though approximately. Finally it was represented that the salinity of upper layer is easily diluted not only by the tidal gate but also by the underdrainge conduit in the lower layer of the freshening reservoir.

Changes of seasonal and vertical water quality was analyzed with physico-chemical data from Soyang and Paldang river-reservoir system in Korea during the 1996 to 1998. In Soyang river-reservoir system, the water column was well stratified, which narrow epilimnion layer of 5 to 10 m depth in spring to summer enlarged gradually about 40 m depth in fall as going to times. In contrast, metalimnion layer tended to be narrow during the same period. Water temperature of hypolimnion was maintained about $5^{\circ}C$ continuously throughout the year. DO of the epilimnion layer was supersaturated from spring to summer, however, it was decreased to 75% at the epilimnion layer and $45{\sim}50%$ at the hypolimnion layer at the late fall. The lowest conductivity of below $50\;{\mu}S/cm$ was observed at the metalimnion layer during thesummer to fall. In Paldang river-reservoir system, the water column wag well mixed layer throughout the year, although water temperature was changed seasonally from $5^{\circ}C$ in February to $28^{\circ}C$ in July. Water temperature between upper and lower layer was different about $5^{\circ}C$ from late spring (May) to early fall (September). DO was over and less saturated in upper and lower layer during the early summer to early fall, respectively. Conductivity was decreased to $90\;{\mu}S/cm$ in lower layer of below $4{\sim}5\;m$ depth during the late spring to early fall and that of upper layer of above 10 m depth decreased to about $100\;{\mu}S/cm$ during the late fall (November) and early spring (March). Retention time of Soyang river-reservoir system was much longer than that of Paldang river-reservoir system. Chlorophyll a, T-N and T-P concentration in Paldang river-reservoir system were higher than that of Soyang river-reservoir system by a factor of 2.7, 1.2 and 2.6, respectively. Algal blooming was deeply affected by the nutrients than the retention time.

In this study, the model enhancing the safety of reservoirs and reducing the downstream flood damage by reservoirs system operation during abnormal flood was developed. Linear programming was used for the optimal reservoirs system operation during an abnormal flood and fuzzy inference system was introduced to solve the uncertainty problem which is included in hydrological factors like inflow, water level and inflow variation of reservoir operation. The linear programming model determined the optimal reservoir system operation rules and could be used in situation where water demands varies rapidly during the abnormal flood events using fuzzy control technique. In this study, the optimal reservoirs system operation for Andong and Imha reservoirs located in the upper basin of Nakdong river was performed in order that the design flood discharge at Andong city would not be exceeded for the design flood of 100 year and PMF(Probable Maximum Flood). And the model that determines the release according to the downstream flow discharge, the reservoir storage, the inflow and the inflow variation of each reservoir was developed using the optimal system operation result and fuzzy control technique. The developed model consisted of 224 fuzzy rules according to the conditions of Andong reservoir, Imha reservoir and Andong city. And the release from each reservoir could be determined when the current data are used as input data through the developed GUI.

The Upper Devonian Grossmont Formation in Alberta, Canada reserves an estimated 50 billion cubic meters of bitumen and possess about 1/6 of the total bitumen resources in northern Alberta. However, unlike the overlying Athabasca oil sands, non conventional bitumen resources has not been developed as yet. The carbonate rocks of Grosmont Formation have been subject to various stages of diagenesis, including dolomatization and karstification with a strong effect on the distribution of porosity and permeability, which resulted in highly heterogeneous reservoirs. An extensive fracture logging and mapping was performed on total of six boreholes located in the study area to explore the characteristics of fracture geometry system and the subsurface structures of carbonates reservoir that holds bitumen. Fractal dimension was used as a measure of the statistical homogeneity of the fractured rock masses. The applicability of random Cantor dust, Dc, as a fractal parameter was examined systematically. The statistical homogeneity of fractured carbonates rock masses was investigated in the study area. The structural domains of the rock masses were delineated depthwise according to estimated Dc. The major fracture orientation was dominated by horizontal beddings having dip of $0-20^{\circ}$. Also, fractures having high dip angles existed with relatively low frequency. Three dimensional fracture network modeling for each structural domain has been performed based on fracture orientation and intensity, and some representative conceptual models for carbonates reservoir in the study area has been proposed. The developed subsurface conceptual models will be used to capture the geomechanical characteristics of the carbonates reservoir.
