The flow around a high-speed train with three underbody structures in the bogie area is numerically investigated using the improved delayed detached eddy simulation method. The vortex structure, pressure distribution, flow field structure, and unsteady velocity of the wake are analyzed by vortex identification criteria Q, frequency spectral analysis, empirical mode decomposition (EMD), and Hilbert spectral analysis. The results show that the structures of the bogie and its installation cabin reduce the momentum of fluid near the tail car, thus it is easy to induce flow separation and make the fluid no longer adhere to the side surface of the train, then forming vortices. Under the action of the vortices on the side of the tail car, the wake vortices have a trend of spanwise motion. But the deflector structure can prevent the separation on the side of the tail car. Besides, the bogie fairings do not affect the formation process and mechanism of the wake vortices, but the fairings prevent the low-speed fluid in the bogie installation cabin from flowing to the side of the train and reduce the number of the vortices in the wake region.
High-resolution simulations using vortex methods have been performed for simulating unsteady viscous flows around an impulsively started square cylinder. In order to investigate the phenomenon from laminar to transition flow, simulations are performed for Reynolds numbers 25, 50, 150 and 250. At extremely low Reynolds number, flow around a square cylinder is known to separate at the trailing edges rather than the leading edges. With an increase of Reynolds number, the flow separation at the leading edges will be developed. The main flow characteristics of developing recirculation region and separations from leading and trailing edges are studied with the unsteady behavior of the wake after the cylinder starts impulsively. A notable change in the flow evolution is found at Re=150, that is, it is shown that the flow separations begin at both leading and trailing edges of the square cylinder. On the other hand, when Re=250, the strong secondary vorticity from the rear surfaces of the square cylinder increases the drag coefficient as the primary vortex layer is pushed outwards. The comparisons between results of the present study and experimental data show a good consistency.

The unsteady dynamics of the starting flow of a flat plate is studied by using a vortex shedding model. The model describes the body and separated vortex from the trailing edge of the plate by vortex sheets, retaining a singularity at the leading edge. The model is applied to simulate the flow of an accelerated plate for small angles of attack. For numerical computations, we take two representative cases of the translational velocity of a plate: impulsive translation and uniform acceleration. The model successfully demonstrates the formation of wakes shed from the plate. The wake behind the plate is stronger for a larger angle of attack. Predictions for the lifting force from the model are in agreement with results of Navier-Stokes simulations.
3D-PTV measurement was conducted on the wake of a goldfish in order to understand its swimming motions. The measurement system consisted of three CCD cameras, an image grabber, an Ar-Ion laser and a host computer. The flow properties of the wake of the goldfish were measured under three different velocities of the currents. Unsteady flow structures around the goldfish were quantitatively clarified using the time-consecutive instantaneous three-dimensional vectors obtained by the constructed 3D-PTV system.
A study of three-dimensional unsteady incompressible flow past elliptic disk with aspect ratio 3 is presented. Numerical visualization using the vortex filament method was performed at Reynolds number of 20,000 on the basis of the minor diameter, the random walk method was used to calculate viscous diffusion effect. We suggest 3 stages about the wake development according to its structures, stability and motions and described the characteristics of each stages. The structure of the elliptic wake is more complicate and unstable than the wake behind a circular disk.

For the understanding of the complex flow characteristics in the counter-rotating axial flow fan, it is necessary to investigate the three-dimensional unsteady flow fields in the counter-rotating axial flow fan. This information is also essential for the prediction of the aerodynamic and acoustical characteristics of the counter-rotating axial flow fan. Experimental study on the three-dimensional unsteady flow in the counter-rotating axial flow fan is carried out at the design point(operating condition). Three-dimensional unsteady flow fields in the counter rotating axial flow fan are measured at the cross-sectional planes of the upstream and downstream of each rotor using the $45^{\circ}$ inclined hot-wire. Three-dimensional unsteady flow fields in the counter-rotating axial flow such as the wake, the tip vortex and the tip leakage flow are shown the form of the velocity vectors and the velocity contours.

The flow fields around the HARTII rotor were numerically investigated using a viscous flow solver on adaptive unstructured meshes. An overset mesh and a deforming mesh technique were used to handle the blade motion including blade deflection, which was obtain from the HARTII experimental data. A solution-adaptive mesh refinement technique was also used to capture the rotor wake effectively. Comparison of the sectional normal force and pitching moment at 87% radial station between the two cases, with and without the blade deflection, showed that the blade loading is significantly affected by blade torsion. It was found that as the mesh was refined, the strength of tip vortex is better preserved, and the magnitude of high frequency blade loading, caused by blade-vortex interaction (BVI), is further magnified. It was also found that a proper time step size, which corresponds to the cell size, should be used to predict unsteady solutions accurately. In general, the numerical results in terms of the unsteady blade loading and the rotor wake show good agreement with the experimental data.
Flows over a square cylinder with and without plasma actuation are numerically investigated to see whether plasma actuation can effectively modify vortex shedding from the cylinder and reduce the drag and lift fluctuations. In this study, a plasma synthetic jet actuator is mounted on the rear side of cylinder as a means of direct-wake control. The effect of plasma actuation is considered by adding a momentum forcing term in the Navier-Stokes equations. Results show that the reduction of mean drag and lift fluctuations is obtained for both steady and unsteady actuation. However, the steady actuation is better than the unsteady one in terms of mean drag as well as drag fluctuations. With the strong steady actuation considered, the interaction of two separating shear layers from rear corners is effectively weakened due to the interference of synthetic jets. It results in a merging of synthetic-jet and shear-layer vortices and the increase of vortex shedding frequency. On the other hand, the unsteady actuation generates pulsating synthetic jets in the near wake, but it does not change the vortex shedding frequency for the actuation frequencies considered in this study.
This paper presents an extensive analysis of unsteady wind loading data on a 18 m long and 2 m high wall in a rural environment, with the wind at a range of angles to the wall normal. The data is firstly analyzed using standard statistical techniques (moments of probability distributions, auto- and cross-correlations, auto- and cross-spectra etc.). The analysis is taken further using a variety of less conventional methods - conditional sampling, proper orthogonal decomposition and wavelet analysis. It is shown that, even though the geometry is simple, the nature of the unsteady flow is surprisingly complex. The fluctuating pressures on the front face of the wall are to a great extent caused by the turbulent fluctuations in the upstream flow, and reflect the oncoming flow structures. The results further suggest that there are distinct structures in the oncoming flow with a variety of scales, and that the second order quasi-steady approach can predict the pressure fluctuations quite well. The fluctuating pressures on the rear face are also influenced by the fluctuations in the oncoming turbulence, but also by unsteady fluctuations due to wake unsteadiness. These fluctuations have a greater temporal and spatial coherence than on the front face and the quasi-steady method over-predicts the extent of these fluctuations. Finally the results are used to check some assumptions made in the current UK wind loading code of practice.
Discharge flows from a centrifugal pump impeller with a specific speed of 150 [rpm, m$^3$/min, m] were experimentally investigated. A large axisymmetric collector instead of a volute casing was installed to obtain circumferentially uniform flow, i.e. without interaction of the impeller and the volute. The unsteady flow was measured at the impeller exit and vaneless diffuser using a hot film probe and a pressure transducer. The flow at impeller exit showed pronounced jet-wake flow patterns. The wake, which was on the suction/hub side at high flow rate, became enlarged pitchwisely on both the hub and the shroud side as the flow rate decreases. The pitchwise non-uniformity of the flow rapidly decreased along the downstream and the non-uniformity almost disappeared at radius ratio of 1.18 for medium flow rate. The mean vaneless diffuser flow was reasonably predicted using a one dimensional analysis when an empirical constant was used to specify the skin friction coefficient. The data can be used for a centrifugal pump impeller design and validation of CFD codes and flow modeling.
