Every year in the ocean, various accidents occur frequently and illegal fishing is rampant. Moreover, their size and frequency are also increasing. In order to reduce losses of life or property caused by these, it is necessary to have a means to perform remote monitoring quickly. As an effective platform of such monitoring means, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is receiving the spotlight. In these situations where marine accidents or illegal fishing occur, main targets of monitoring are ships. In this study, we propose a UAV based ship monitoring system and suggest a method of determining ship positions using UAV multi-sensory data. In the proposed method, firstly, the position and attitude of individual images are determined by using the pre-performed system calibration results and GPS/INS data obtained at the time when images were acquired. In addition, after the ship being detected automatically or semi-automatically from the individual images, the absolute coordinates of the detected ships are determined. The proposed method was applied to actual data measured at 200 m, 350 m, and 500 m altitude, the ship position can be determined with accuracy of 4.068 m, 8.916 m, and 13.734 m, respectively. According to the minimum standard of a hydrographical survey, the ship positioning results of 200 m and 350 m data satisfy grade S and the results of 500 m data do grade 1a, where the accuracy is required for positioning the coastline and topography less significant to navigation order. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed method can be effectively used for various purposes of marine monitoring or surveying.
Maritime back-up navigation system in port approach requires a horizontal accuracy of 10 meters in IALA (International Association of Lighthouse Authorities) recommendations. eLoran which is a best back-up navigation system that satisfies accuracy requirement has poor navigation performance depending signal environments. Especially, noise caused by multipath and electronic devices around eLoran antenna affects navigation performance. In this paper, Ship based Navigation Back-up system using UAV on Interference is designed to satisfy horizontal accuracy requirement. To improve the eLoran signal environment, UAVs are equipped with camera, IMU sensor and eLoran antenna and receivers. This proposed system is designed to receive eLoran signal through UAV-based receiver and control UAV's position and attitude within Landmark around area. The ship-based positioning using eLoran signal, vision and attitude information received from UAV satisfy resilient and robust navigation requirements.

This study is an experimental study on how to use phase change materials(PCM) to generate electrical energy for long-term operation of underwater unmanned vehicles. The electrical energy generation method is a volume change and a pressure change that occur as a phase change material changes to a solid or liquid state according to temperature, and the change in pressure creates a flow of fluid to create electrical energy. Polyethylene glycol was used as a phase change material considering the temperature of the ocean. In addition, an electrical energy generating device that converts volume change into pressure at low temperature (1℃~2℃) in solid state and high temperature (21℃~25℃) in liquid state was fabricated. As a result of the experiment, the pressure change according to the phase change rapidly changed between 1 hour and 2 hours, and maintained a pressure of about 24MPa after 4 hours. Through this, it was confirmed that it can be used as a power source for underwater unmanned vehicles using phase change materials and temperature differences. In addition, it was found that a more improved design should be made in order to apply the phase change material to an underwater unmanned vehicle.

The naval unmanned surface vehicle (USV) conducts the surveillance operations, based on the mission plan set by the user. For setting the mission planning, the user needs to analyze the suitability of the operation for the mission planning. In this paper, we proposed a simulation program that estimates the probability of detecting targets of the mission planning in the analysis. In the simulation analysis, we design the USV's maneuvering characteristics, radar detection operational performance equipped on the USV, and targets infiltrating into surveillance area in the simulation experiment scenario. Based on the simulation results, we evaluated the mission planning suitability and find a mission planning solution recursively.

A new robust sliding mode control with disturbance and state observers has been proposed to control the nozzle angle of a water-jet system for a Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV). As the water-jet system of a ship is subjected to direct disturbances owing to the exposure to the marine environment in water, it requires a robust control. A state observer and a disturbance observer are added to the water jet nozzle control system to achieve a robust control against disturbances. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, a test bed is constructed by a propulsion system used in the popular USV. This proposed algorithm has been evaluated by comparing to the existing algorithm through experiments. The results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is better than that of the conventional PID or sliding mode controller when controlling the steering of the USV with disturbances.
A light-weight cantilever type towing carriage was devised and installed in the towing tank at Seoul National University. Wireless measurement devices were also provided for appropriate data acquisition during high-speed towing tests. With the new carriage system, a series of model tests were performed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the racing boat in the towing tank and the resistance test results had sufficient accuracy so that they could be used in the development of a high speed planning hull.

This study presents an automatic collision avoidance algorithm for autonomous navigation of unmanned surface vessels. The performance of the collision avoidance algorithm is heavily dependent on the estimation quality of the course and speed of traffic ships because collision avoidance maneuvers should be determined based on the predicted motions of the traffic ships and their trajectory uncertainties. In this study, the collision avoidance algorithm is implemented based on the Probabilistic Velocity Obstacle (PVO) approach considering the maritime collision regulations (COLREGs). In order to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm, an extensive set of simulations was conducted and the results are discussed.

In systems like the combat management system of a naval ship or smart city of civilians, where many sensors and actuators are connected, the middle-ware DDS (Data Distribution Service) is mainly used to transmit large amounts of data. It is scalable and can effectively respond to the increase in sensors or equipment connected to the system in the future. The engineering control system (ECS), which plays an important role similar to the combat management system of a naval ship, still uses Server-Client model with industrial protocols such as Modbus and CAN (Controller Area Network) bus, to transmit data, which is unfavorable in terms of scalability. However, as automation and unmanned systems advance, more sensors and actuators are expected to be added, necessitating substantial program modification. DDS can effectively address such situations. The purpose of this study is to confirm the development possibility of an integrated monitoring and control system of a ship by using OpenDDS, which follows the OMG (Object Management Group) standard among the middle-ware DDS used in the combat management system. To achieve this goal, field equipment simulators and an ECS server were configured to perform field equipment data input/output and simulation using DDS was performed. The ECS prototype successfully handled data transmission, confirming that DDS is capable of serving as the middle-ware for the ECS of a ship.
This study aims to investigate changes in the demand for ship officers in response to changes in the shipping industry environment in which Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) emerge according to the application of the fourth industrial revolution technology to ships, and it looks into changes in the skill of ship officer. It also analyzes and proposes a plan for nurturing ship officers accordingly. As a result of the degree of recognition and AHP analysis, this study suggests that a new training system is required because the current training and education system may cover the job competencies of emergency response, caution and danger navigation, general sailing, cargo handling, seaworthiness maintenance, emergency response, and ship maintenance and management, but tasks such as remote control, monitoring diagnosis, device management capability, and big data analysis require competency for unmanned and shore-based control. By evaluating the importance of change factors in the duties of ship officers in Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships, this study provides information on ship officer educational institutions' response strategies for nurturing ship officers and prioritization of resource allocation, etc. The importance of these factors was compared and evaluated to suggest changes in the duties of ship officers and methods of nurturing ship officers according to the introduction of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships. It is expected that the findings of this study will be meaningful as it systematically derives the duties and competency factors of ship officers of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships from a practical point of view and analyzed the perception level of each relevant expert to diagnose expert-level responses to the introduction of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships.
This paper presents experimental results for the vibration characteristics of the small unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) OPKO 300, which was designed and manufactured by Daewoo ship and Marine Engineering Ltd. The autonomy of UUVs has led to an increase in their use in scientific, military, and commercial areas because their autonomy makes it possible for UUVs to be utilized instead of humans in hazardous missions such as mine countermeasure missions (MCM). Since it is impossible to use devices based on electromagnetic waves to gather information in an underwater environment, only sonar systems, which use sound waves, can be used in underwater environments, and their performance can strongly affect the autonomy of a UUV. Since a thruster system, which combines a motor and propeller in a single structure, is widely used as the propulsion system of a UUV and is mounted on the outside of a UUV’s stern, it can generate vibration, which can be transferred throughout the shell of the UUV from its stern to its bow. The transferred vibration can affect the performance of various sonar systems such as side-scan sonar or forward-looking sonar. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the effect of the transferred vibration of the UUV on the sonar systems. Even if various numerical methods were used to analyze the vibration problem of a UUV, it would be hard to predict the vibration phenomena of a UUV at the initial design stage. In this work, an experimental study using OKPO 300 and an impact hammer was carried out to analyze the vibration feature of a small real UUV in the air. The frequency response function of the vibration based on the experimental results is presented.
