  • In this paper, a fault diagnosis method using unknown-input proportional integral (PI) observers including the magnitude of actuator failures is proposed. It is shown that actuator failures are detected and isolated perfectly by monitoring the integrated error between the actual output and the estimated output using an unknown-input PI observer. Also in presence of complex actuator and sensor failures, these failures are detected and isolated by multiple unknown-input PI observers perfectly.

  • This paper is proposed a novel fuzzy disturbance observer based on backstepping method for nonlinear systems with unknown disturbance. Using fuzzy logic systems, a fuzzy disturbance observer with the disturbance observation input is introduced for unknown disturbance. To guarantee that the proposed disturbance observer estimates the unknown disturbance, the disturbance observation error dynamic system is employed. Under the framework of the backstepping design, the fuzzy disturbance observer is constructed recursively and an adaptive laws and the disturbance observation input are derived. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the validity of our proposed disturbance observer for nonlinear systems.

  • 1) Linear state feedback control design problem for plant with unknown deterministic disturbance is considered and a method to realize state feedback by using adaptive observer which estimates the unknown disturbance simultaneously is proposed. 2) From the viewpoint of practical application, we propose an extended adaptive observer with direct plant path from input to output, which is necessary to use the acceleration type sensors as plant output. 3) Theoretical result is confirmed by numerical simulation of 1-DOF vibration control system.

  • The robustness issues in fault detection and isolation(FDI) have received considerable attenuation in recent years, due to the increasing demand for safe and reliable operation of uncertain and complex dynamic systems. The aim of this paper is to present the FDI method by using proportional integral(PI) observer and unknown input observer(UIO) under the faults of actuators and sensors. Due to this simple residual generator, the PI observer can easily detect the both faults of actuator and sensor. A simulation results show the effectiveness of this methods.

  • The problem of constructing an observer for use in the control of superheater temperature with desuperheater is considered. The distributed heat input into the superheater is usually not available for use in the observer, and hence is treated as a disturbance. The observer theory for systems with unknown inputs is exploited and applied to the problem. Approximation of the heat input utilizing the specific heat input distribution pattern is also considered.

  • A new FDOs (fault diagnostic observers) and the residual generation schemes using the FDOs are suggested for the process fault detection and isolation of linear (control) systems. The design method of the FDO is described, first, for the full measurement systems. Then it is extended for the systems with unmeasurable state variables. An unknown input observer is proposed and applied for the extension. The size of the observer bank may be the smallest, specially in full measurement systems, because the order of the proposed FDO is very low. In spite of the simplicity, the scheme provides the same information for the detection and isolation of the anticipated faults as the conventional multiple observer based schemes. The residuals may be structured so that fault isolation can be performed by pre-selected logic. An FDIS using the proposed scheme is constructed for the model of the four-tank system. Simulation results show the practical feasibility of the proposed scheme.

  • In this paper, a new design procedure is proposed for constructing the observer for linear discrete-time systems with unknown inputs. An existence condition for the suggested observer is also presented. The observer design procedure does not use any transformation technique, augmentation technique and has a clear physical meaning, so it is easy to understand and to design the observer. It directly estimates the unknown inputs from that outputs only, so it is different from other pre-works in which the reconstruction of the unknown inputs arc performed with the additional output derivatives.

  • The closed-loop state and input observer is a pole-placement type observer and estimates unknown state and input variables simultaneously. Pole-placement type observers may have poor performances with respect to modeling error and sensing bias error. The effects of these ill-conditioning factors must be minimized for the robust performance in designing observers. In this paper, the steady-state performance of the closed-loop state and input observer is investigated quantitatively and is represented as the estimation error bounds. The performance indices are selected from these error bounds and are related to the robustness with respect to modeling errors and sensing bias. By considering both transient and steady-state performance, the main performance index is determined as the condition number of the eigenvector matrix based on $L_2$-norm.

  • An adaptive algorithm is presented for diagnosis of actuator faults. The concept of unknown input decoupling is combined with an adaptive observer, leading to an adaptive diagnostic observer, which has the robustness property in the presence of an unmeasurable term such as uncertainties. The observation error equation for the adaptive diagnostic observer does not depend on the effect of uncertainties and used to construct an adaptive diagnostic algorithm that provides the estimates of the gains of actuators, which can be obtained directly via the use of the augmented error technique. The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm is more realistic in the sense that better robustness properties can be assured without knowledge about uncertainties and is potentially useful in the development of a fault tolerant control system.
