An Analysis of the Hampering Factors of Innovation: Focusing on SMEs in Korean Manufacturing Industry (한국 중소기업의 혁신 저해 요인이 기업의 혁신 활동에 미치는 요인 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the factors that hinder innovation of SMEs on innovation activities of Korean firms. Many existing literature studies remain focused on factors that promote innovation activities. However, in order for companies to promote innovation, it is important to analyze the factors that hinder innovation as well as those that promote innovation. In this study, we analyzed the relationship between technological innovation inhibition factors and technological innovation performance of 4,075 SMEs in Korea using the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Policy statistical data. The research model and hypothesis test of this study consist of three stages. First, the reliability of the variables used was verified using exploratory factor analysis. Second, the proposed hypothesis was modeled using structural equation modeling. Finally, validity of the structural equation was verified using confirmatory factor analysis. As a result, the lack of need for innovation influenced innovation performance and the government support system mediated them. SMEs should establish technological innovation strategies to maximize the effect of technological innovation with limited resources, and government should make polices to promote innovation of SMEs. It's expected to be used in the case of establishing a support policy.

  • Social capital contains relational, structural and cognitive dimensions. This study regards social capital as diminishing factor in innovation resistance. Trust, structuring individual tie and vision sharing which are representatives of three dimensions of social capital diminish innovation resistance. So innovation becomes more successful.

  • Innovations significantly affect the efficiency of the socioeconomic systems of the regions, acting as a system-forming element of their development. Modern models of economic development also consider innovation activity, intellectual potential, knowledge as the basic factors for stimulating the economic growth of the region. The purpose of the study is to develop methodological foundations for evaluating the effectiveness of a regional innovation system based on a multidimensional analysis of its effects. To further study the effectiveness of RIS, we have used one of the methods of multidimensional statistical analysis - canonical analysis. The next approach allows adding another important requirement to the methodological provision of evaluation of the level of innovation development of industries and regions, namely - the time factor, the formalization of which is realized in autoregressive dynamic economic and mathematical models and can be used in our research. Multidimensional Statistical Analysis for RIS effectiveness estimation was used to model RIS by typological regression. Based on it, multiple regression models were built in groups of regions with low and relatively high innovation potential. To solve the methodological problem of RIS research, we can also use the approach to the system as a "box" with inputs and outputs.

Study of Design and Fabrication of GaAs Varactor diode (GaAs 버렉터 다이오드의 설계와 제작에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we have designed and fabricated hyperabrupt varactor diodes. Capacitance variations of hyperabrupt-doped varactor diodes are larger than those of uniform-doped varactor diodes. The measured reverse breakdown voltage of the fabricated varactor diodes was about 20 V. For the anode contact diameter of $50\;{\mu}m$, the maximum capacitance of the fabricated varactor diode was 2.1 pF and the minimum capacitance 0.44 pF. Therefore, the $C_{max}/C_{min}$ ratio was 4.77. Also, for the anode contact diameter of $60\;{\mu}m$, the maximum and minimum capacitances were 2.9 and 0.62 pF, respectively. And, thus, the $C_{max}/C_{min}$ ratio was 4.64.

  • To perform the comparative study, we experimented on two differential epitaxial structures, the conventional Metamorphic High Electron Mobility Transistor (MHEMT) using the InAlAs/InGaAs structure and the InP-composite channel MHEMT adopting the InAlAs/InGaAs/InP/n-InP structure. Compared to the conventional MHEMT, the InP-composite channel MHEMT shows improved breakdown performance; over about 3.5 V. This increased breakdown voltage can be explained by the lower impact ionization coefficient of the InP-composite channel MHEMT than that of the conventional MHEMT.

  • This study was intended to present the magnitude of privacy infringement concerns and their relationship to consumer innovation (functional innovation, hedonistic innovation, social innovation, cognitive innovation), to identify differences among groups and to suggest implications for marketing strategies for the spread of new products. The implications of this study are as follows. First, functional innovation has shown that differences exist between groups. Analysts say that sensitive groups are buying products that can simplify their work immediately after release despite concerns over privacy violations. Second, hedonistic innovation has shown that differences exist between groups. These findings suggest that sensitive groups prefer novel products, products that give excitement and excitement about products, and products that give new enjoyment and fun that they have never known before. Third, social innovation has been shown that there is no difference between groups. These analyses show that the self-esteem of using products that others have never experienced before, and the curiosity that anyone envies, are purchased or used first. Finally, cognitive innovation showed that differences existed between groups. These analyses show that new products are purchased when they meet the functions, design, and innovation that consumers want.

  • In this study, we suggest a new perspective on the linkage between alliance portfolio diversity and innovation performance based on a contingency approach. Using a longitudinal data set on alliance portfolios and patents of 182 firms in the U.S. manufacturing industries, we examined that alliance portfolio diversity has a U-shaped relationship with firm-level innovation. Internal value creation capabilities in terms of routine and ability are found to moderate the relationship between alliance portfolio diversity and innovation performance: Organizational search routine strengthens the relationship of alliance portfolio diversity and innovation performance while technological capabilities weaken and flip the relationship.

  • This paper explores the relationships between technological acquisition strategies of small firms and innovation in the Korean Electronics industry. Its thesis is that small firms' technology strategies and their effects on the rate of innovation differ according to the new and traditional technology settings. A primary finding of this study is that in-house R & D and technical linkages with buyers and suppliers have stronger effects on the radical innovation in the new technology setting rather than in the traditional technology setting. The findings of the study provides insight for interpreting inconsistent results of recent research for the importance of external linkages to innovation. They also suggest some implications of small firms' strategies and public policies for accelerating technological innovation.

Innovation and Productivity: A Case of Australian Business

  • This paper investigates two important relationships relating to firm behaviour and performance using econometric methods. First, the relationship between product market competition and innovation is examined, and then the association between innovation and productivity is separately investigated. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics' Business Longitudinal Database are used in the analysis. For every measure of competition considered except one, the results of the modelling are consistent with an anti-Schumpeterian relationship between competition and innovation - that is, firms appear more likely to innovate if they face stronger competition. The results examining the relationship between innovation and productivity, although weaker than those between competition and innovation, suggest that innovation is associated with better productivity outcomes.

The Effect of Organizational Culture on Innovation Activities and Organizational Effectiveness

  • The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the mediating effect of innovation activities on the effect of organizational culture perceived by organizational members on organizational effectiveness. The main results are as follows. First, Hypothesis 1, organizational culture, was adopted as it showed a positive influence on innovation activities. Second, since organizational culture showed statistically significant effect on organizational effectiveness, Hypothesis 2 was adopted. Third, the innovation activity, which is hypothesis 3, was analyzed to have a positive influence on organizational effectiveness. Therefore, hypothesis 3 was accepted. Fourth, the innovation activity, hypothesis 4, showed a mediating effect between organizational culture and organizational effectiveness. As shown in the results of this study, it is indicated that organizations should improve organizational effectiveness for growth and development through the advancement of the sustainability management system in the rapidly changing business environment. To this end, it was necessary to systematically build and activate an organizational culture and innovation activities suitable for the characteristics of the organization. In other words, organizational effectiveness can be improved when constructing and implementing advanced innovation activities based on measures to revitalize organizational culture according to changes in the business environment.
