  • This study analyzed Korean university libraries' holdings of Western language books published in 2003 and 2013 using the KERIS union catalog with a view to investigating the changes in collection development of Western language books in the libraries. To do that, new collection indexes - holding h-index, CUI (Collection Uniqueness Index), and CCHR (Common Collection Holding Ratio) - were suggested, and they were used with basic indexes such as the number of titles, the number of books, and the number of books per title. The analysis reveals that compared to those published in 2003, the number of titles was decreased by 16.1% with those published in 2013, and the number of books dropped more sharply, by 42.2%. Also, in 2013, CCHR was decreased while CUI was increased. In terms of subject, among DDC main classes, 0XX (Generalities) showed the greatest decrease rate in both the number of titles and books because of the radical reduction of computer-related books. In terms of each library's holdings, the number of Western language books held by top libraries has been increased with those published in 2013.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to introduce the types and contents of books related to acupuncture published in North Korea that can be identified in South Korea, and to understand the general characteristics of North Korean acupuncture. Methods : Firstly, we identified books related to acupuncture in the Information Center on North Korea of the National Library of Korea. Specialized books on treatment interventions such as acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, electrotherapy, and manual therapy including acupressure which stimulate acupoints were included in the study. Two authors reviewed the title, table of contents, and contents of each book in the order of publication year for the searched books. Based on this, the characteristics and trends of North Korean acupuncture were comprehensively examined. Results : The included 18 books were published between 1964 and 2018. One of them was considered a Chinese book translated into Korean and published in China, and another was a North Korean book republished by a South Korean publisher. Except for these, all were published in North Korea, two of which were translations of Chinese books. Most of them were books on the theory and clinical applications of acupuncture, but some of them focused on specific treatment interventions such as auricular acupuncture, fire needling, manual therapy, cupping, or electrotherapy. Also, there was a book about the mechanism of acupuncture analgesia in a neurophysiological way. Conclusions : Since the mid-1960s, North Korea has been steadily attempting to combine acupuncture and Western medicine by applying the disease name and classification system of Western medicine, using modern diagnostic technique, and explaining the mechanism of acupuncture based on the latest research. After the 2000s, the standard international acupuncture nomenclature by World Health Organization was used. In recent years, there has been a tendency to publish and widely disseminate specialized books on non-pharmacological treatment such as cupping, electrotherapy, and fire needling.

  • The Jade Investiture Books in Joseon Dynasty shows diverse facies with various petrographic characteristics to green and white based on color. In lithologically, the green rocks are jade composed of calcite and serpentine, and the white ones are marbles consisting mainly in crystalline calcite. As a result of X-ray diffraction of jade rocks, the more green in color, the more increased intensity of serpentine appears. Therefore, the grade of jade is correlated with contents of serpentine. The Jade Investiture Books owned by the National Palace Museum of Korea are subdivided with 104 (41.3%) books made by only jade rocks, 98 (38.9%) books made by only marbles, and 50 (19.8%) books mixed with jade rocks and marbles. Among the mixed ones, 47 (18.6%) books consisted mainly of the marbles. This result shows the superior marble books occupy more than half of the total books. The Jade Investiture Books made in early Joseon Dynasty are composed of high grade jade. However, the grade of jade had decreased as the kings changed in process of time, and the composition of marble had increased in reverse proportion of jade. The quality of letter pigments, metal accessories and fabrics also had decreased with jade. These trends are reflected in the aspect of society such as weakening royal authority, national power and finance with the course of time. The jade of the books has different mineralogical characteristics from some modern jade produced in Chuncheon nephrite and Buyeo precious serpentine in Korea. Meanwhile, there is ancient literature that described quarries from Namyang in Hwaseong of Gyeonggi province. This area has a wide distribution of gneiss, limestone and limesilicate rocks are interbedded between muscovite schist. The limesilicate rocks contain diopside, which produced serpentine through alteration. It has possibility to make the Jade Investiture Books using these small amounts of jade through mining activity.

  • This study investigated differences in toddlers' language development depending on their teachers' types of interaction during reading of picture books. A pilot study identified teachers' types of interaction as instructional, non-immediate, and passive. Fifteen teachers recruited from 10 child-care centers located in Seoul and their 90 2-year-old toddlers participated in this study. Teachers read two picture books to a small group of toddlers each week for eight weeks. Data on the toddlers' receptive and expressive language, vocabulary, reading behavior, and book handling were collected and compared by their teachers' interaction type before and after teachers' 8-week reading of picture books. Results showed that teachers using the non-immediate interaction type had the most positive effects on toddlers' language development.

  • Purpose : "The Part of Cold damage in Uihakipmun" is the collection of the books on Cold damage which follow the way of description focusing on symptoms before Ming dynasty. "The chapter of First symptom" in this part is the first chapter which described focusing on the symptoms in earnest. This research is to discover the reference books of "The chapter of First symptom" in detail. Methods : I compared the books presented in the reference list of "The Part of Cold damage in Uihakipmun" with the sentences of "The chapter of First symptom". Results & Conclusions : "The chapter of First symptom" referred to "Sanghanyukseo(傷寒六書)" and "Injaesanghanryuseo(仁齋傷寒類書)" mainly, and the rest were supplemented with other books like "Hwalinseo(活人書)". And the books which were not listed on the reference like "Sanghanmyeongriron(傷寒明理論)", "Yupyeonhwalinseogwaljijangdoron(類編活人書括指掌圖論)" were also referred in part. Among the reference list of "The Part of Cold damage in Uihakipmun", "Baekmun(百問)" doesn't indicate "Sanghanbaekmun(傷寒百問)" but "Sanghanbaekmunga(傷寒百問歌)". As for the history of the books on cold damage which described focusing on symptoms, "Injaesanghanryuseo" added new contents on the basis of "Hwalinseo" and after that, it had a large influence on "Sanghanyukseo" and "The Part of Cold damage in Uihakipmun". In case of 33.4% of the chapter of first symptom, the reference books were not found. It includes the part that the reference books were not found and also the part that Lee Cheon added his personal opinion. For this parts, the in-depth study is needed afterwards.
