A Rare Case of Kimura Disease with Bilateral Parotid Involvement

  • Kimura disease is a rare idiopathic chronic inflammatory disorder. It typically presents in the head and neck area, whereas bilateral involvement is unusual. Its diagnosis requires it to be differentiated from other inflammatory diseases and from head and neck tumors. Treatment methods include conservative management, steroid administration, radiotherapy, and surgery; however, no single treatment of choice has been established. Herein, we report an unusual presentation of Kimura disease with bilateral parotid involvement. This case was treated by surgical excision.

  • Antibacterial activity-guided fractionation of the $CHCl_3-MeOH$ (1:1) extract of Paeonia suffruticosa root bark furnished three monoterpene glycosides, 6-O-vanillyoxypaeoniflorin (1), mudanpioside-H (2), and galloyl-oxypaeoniflorin (3). Of the isolated compounds, compound 1 is a new compound. All isolated compounds showed broad, but moderate, antibacterial activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in the range of 100 to $500\;{\mu}g/mL$ against eighteen pathogenic microorganisms of concern for public health or zoonosis.

  • For the development of new anticonvulsive agents, GABAmimetics such as nipecotic acid, isonipecotic acid, ${\gamma}-aminobutyric$ acid (GABA), ${\gamma}-vinyl$ GABA (vigabatrin) and valproic acid were covalently coupled through an ester bond by a two-carbon linker chain as potential prodrugs and evaluated for their anticonvulsive activities.

  • Substituted isoquinolin-1-ones (1) were synthesized to test their in vitro anticancer activity. 3-Biphenyl-H-methylisoquinolin-1-one (7) showed the most potent anticancer activity against five different human cancer cell lines.

Acellular dermal matrix and bone cement sandwich technique for chest wall reconstruction

  • The authors performed rigid reconstruction using the sandwich technique for full-thickness chest wall defects by using two layers of acellular dermal matrix and bone cement. We assessed six patients who underwent chest wall reconstruction. Reconstruction was performed by sandwiching bone cement between two layers of acellular dermal matrix. In all patients, there was no defect of the overlying soft tissue, and primary closure was performed for external wounds. The average follow-up period was 4 years (range, 2-8 years). No major complications were noted. The sandwich technique can serve as an efficient and safe option for chest wall reconstruction.

  • Orbital floor fractures are commonly encountered, but the dislocation of the eyeball into the maxillary sinus is relatively rare. When it does occur, globe dislocation can have serious consequences, including vision loss, enucleation, and orbito-ocular deformity. Immediate surgical intervention is typically attempted when possible. However, severe comorbidities and poor general health can delay necessary surgery. In this report, we present the surgical outcomes of a 70-year-old woman who received delayed treatment for traumatic eyeball dislocation into the maxillary sinus due to a subarachnoid hemorrhage and hemopneumothorax. Additionally, we propose a treatment algorithm based on our clinical experience and a review of the literature.
