A Study on the Effectiveness of Different Types of Library Instruction in Improving the Information Literacy of Users: Focus on the Sangmyung University Library (도서관의 학술정보 이용교육방법이 피교육자의 학술정보 서비스 이용법에 대한 인지도에 미치는 영향 - 상명대학교 도서관의 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • This study has been conducted in preparation for a library instruction program for the Sangmyung University Library. The purpose of this study Is to assess the effectiveness of different types of library instruction in improving the information literacy of users. 112 questionnaires were measured and analyzed using SAS and t-test, ANOVA among other statistical techniques. The results were as follows: (1) Library instruction directly affects the information literacy of users. After taking library instruction. users were able to effectively use the AtoZ service, related Sites service. thesis service, E-resources, DDS service. off-campus service, translation system and the e-book service through the library homepage. (2) Group instruction proved to be the most effective type of library Instruction while online instruction was the worst.

Use Studies of Library Collections (장서평가에 관한 소고 -특히 이용조사를 중심으로-)

  • Use studies of library collections have been conducted as a method of evaluating collections in a library. The main purpose of use studies is to evaluate the quality of a library collection in terms of extent and mode of its use. In addition to use studies, both quantitative and qualitative methods could be utilized in order to evaluate a library collection. However, the quantitative and qualitative collection evaluation methods are more concerned with the collection itself than with its use. Use studies have been conducted in large academic libraries for the following specific purposes: 1) They attempt to identify little used portion of collections that can be retired less accessible and less expensive storage area. 2) They try to identify core collections to satisfy some degree of circulation demands in the near future. 3) They try to identify use patterns of selected subject areas or type of books that can be used to adjusting collection development practices or fund allocations. 4) They try to assess the document delivery capability of a library to improve their availability. A number of methodologies employed for these specific purposes fall into four major categories; 1) circulation analysis method, 2) last circulation method, 3) relative use method, and 4) document delivery test. Each method is briefly reviewed with its limitations.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the values and meanings of university libraries and library catalog in the learning activities of Korean college students. Discussed in details are unique features in their library use behavior and catalog search behavior, and critical factors influencing their behavioral characteristics. A qualitative approach was employed for data collection and analysis. Intensive interviews were conducted with 30 students, also utilized was tight and close observation of their library search behavior. The result of this study is on identifying the underlying reasons why Korean students use their libraries and catalogs in a passive and limited manner.

  • This research has investigated the perceptions of subject specialization services and the opinions of students majoring in library and information science preparing for librarianship, librarians operating in the field, and library directors on the status and ways of nurturing subject specialization for librarians, among others. To this end, based on the results of previous research and the survey questionnaire analysis, we have presented a policy to train subject librarians. First, we have proposed a plan for systematizing the current educational system within the department of library and information science. We have also suggested ways to secure subject expertise based on curriculum management, minor programs, multi-major programs, and interdisciplinary major programs based on the standard curriculum model. Second, we have presented a subject specialization educational system for field librarians, and further suggested details for the development of an educational program that can help build subject expertise and the operation of educational methods as well as the personnel in charge of implementing the educational programs. Third, we have proposed institutionalization of the qualifications of the subject librarian where the qualification requirements have been organized considering academic background, major program, library career, and career experience in the subject specialization service, further suggesting the implementation and maintenance of the system.

An Empirical Study on the Effectiveness of the Exhibits in University Libraries (대학도서관의 전시에 대한 효과분석 - 이용자와 사서를 중심으로 -)

  • The exhibit programs of library are considered an effective and imporant mechanism to satisfy the demand for information of library users and to innovate a library image. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to investigate their recognitions as to how librarians and library users think of the effectiveness of the exhibition programs and as to how the programs exert an influence upon libraries. For research methodology, this research is randomly questionnaired to 360 library users and 90 librarians in July 1995. The collected data is analyzed by such statistical methods as frequency, crosstabs, T test and annova. The analysis shows that there are interesting research findings as follw; 1. The exhibition programs are appeared to be effective for education of library users. 2. The programs are appeared to be effective for increased use of library materials. 3. The programs are appeared to be effective for public relations. 4. The programs are appeared to be effective for collection development. 5. They are revealed to have academic values like academic articles. In sum, among the opinions of librarians, they indicate that the programs are very important in activating the functions of library. Therefore, university libraries should lavishly support the exhibition programs with enough budget and exhibition planners to manage.

  • In order to understand the author's activities and recent subjects, to examine the academic characteristics of information science through cited pattern and bibliometrics law, and to be basic references for researchers who interested in information science materials, this study was performed by method of bibliometrics analysis of JASIS from the year of 1990 to July, 1993. The materials were 180 papers and 1173 cited literatures of information retrieval which were contained in the issues. These were analysed through SAS and classified as source literature analysis and information retrieval analysis.

  • At present we have access to a plethora of university journals. The purpose of this study is to estimate the use of these university Journals in research fields by focussing on the level of usage in each discipline in addition to the level of usage of each university journal in linguistics. The results indicate the level of academic use of each Journal in lingustics as well as of usage levels between disciplines. From these results, the follow-up measure is requested for differentiation and specialization of university journals.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 바이오인포매틱스 분야의 회색문헌과 백색문헌의 초록을 대상으로 단어 동시출현(word co-occurrence)네트워크 분석을 통해 해당 분야의 연구 동향을 비교 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2010년부터 2012년까지 발표된 회색문헌인 회의자료(proceeding)와 백색문헌인 학술논문(journal article)의 초록을 SCOPUS, IEEEXplore, Microsoft academic search에서 수집하였다. 단어 동시출현 네트워크를 분석한 결과 회색문헌의 주요 연구는 분석도구 및 방법으로, 백색문헌의 주요 연구는 바이오인포매틱스의 주요 연구대상인 유전자 발현, 단백질 서열 및 구조 등으로 나타났다.

Perception on the Use of Mobile Phones in Retrieving Information from Academic Libraries: A developing country perspective

  • The purpose of the study is to identify the perception of the Library and Information Science (LIS) specialists about the use of mobile phones in retrieving information. It investigates the present status of the LIS specialists regarding mobile phone usage, perceptions regarding the use of mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries and points out the possible drawbacks and their solutions for embracing mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries and providing some suggestions. The methodology includes a quantitative approach. The authors used a survey method using a structured questionnaire to measure the perception of LIS specialists regarding the use of mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries. The findings confirmed that the majority (72%) of LIS specialists have the experience of using mobile phones for more than 10 years. Findings also indicate that the LIS specialists have agreed with the statements of advantages of using mobile phones. This paper concludes that the respondents also agreed regarding the possible advantages of introducing mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries. The paper explores the original perceptions of LIS specialists regarding the use of mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries.

  • This study examined the impact of team characteristics(introduction of the team approach team empowerment, leadership of team leaders, open communication director's commitment) on team effectiveness (adaptability to the environments, job satisfaction the positive team culture, cost efficiency) in university libraries. The study used a survey design with a questionnaire to staffs who worked at f academic libraries in South Korea. The major findings from the empirical analysis are as follows. The well-prepared introduction of team approach and director's strong commitment were positively related to the team effectiveness variables such as adaptability to environment, job satisfaction, and cost efficiency.
