  • This study investigates how high school students with low academic achievement seek and use information. Participants were seven US students in an American Literature and Composition course of the $11^{th}$ grade Remedial Education Program who completed a class project that required comprehensive information seeking and use. Data were collected through comprehensive observation and individual interviews with each student, the teacher, and two library media specialists. Additionally, we gathered and analyzed the instructions the teacher and the two library media specialists provided and all documents each student produced to complete the class project. The process of data analysis was supported by QSR NVivo. The findings of the study implied that students experienced cognitive and affective challenges for their information seeking and use required for the tasks and suggested that technological and individual conferencing would motivate the students to continue their information seeking and use. We then conclude the study with some important implications that can be used as a basis for designing information literacy instructions for students with low academic achievement.

  • University libraries need to reborn as central space of the academic activities of university at the 21st century knowledge-based society. This study conducted case study on P University libraries and explored the directivity of spatial composition to actively respond to needs of customers. To do this study, we examined the related papers in and out of Korea, visited major academic libraries in Korea and compared the cases. And we did a survey targeting the customers of P university libraries. The result of survey confirmed that the needs of customers almost correspond to the directivity of spatial composition which we found at the cases for this study. The result of this study can be some references for Korean university libraries to improve their space and do user-oriented library marketing.

  • Pareto principle states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. This study clarified if there is Pareto principle in Korean universities' academic information resource sharing network and calculates the Gini efficient about inequality in sharing academic resources. As a result, top 20% libraries led 80% of performance and inequality degree showed 0.8 as very serious condition. Relative Gini efficient which is recalculated considering scale of each libraries stay 0.7 that is adjusted slightly down. It means that such phenomenon is not caused by the difference of each universities scale with high contribution of big university and low contribution of small university. And in comparison of inequality between university's types, inequality between community colleges and private universities is more serious than four-year-course college and national university respectfully. Finally, as a result of visualizing the distribution of participating libraries, there were libraries with overwhelming contributions, and libraries with small but relatively high contribution levels were also distributed.

  • A collection development policy is the library's master plan that provides library's long/short-term plans. It also informs the community of the library's commitment in collection development. However, in Korea, libraries which maintain such a policy are not yet to be easily found. Furthermore, due to increasing importance of electronic resources, libraries are gradually required to have electronic resource management policy that reflects a change in the information environment. The purpose of this study is to suggest a model electronic resource management policy in academic libraries. It derived and verified more than thirty preliminary elements from literature and case studies. The elements were modified and supplemented, and as a result, the selection criteria gained the highest marks. The findings can be applied for selecting the elements of digital collection development policy in the university library and reorganizing them so as to meet its peculiarities. This study, finally, presents a model that includes a guideline for the university library which will establish digital collection development policy.

  • The purpose of this article is to discuss about both historical progress and current situation of user instruction in Korean academic libraries. Emphasis was on identifying and analyzing the special features and limitations of user instruction from the viewpoints of library users as well as those of librarians. To the end, data were collected from three methods: the first tool was such major statistical sources as 'KERIS university library statistics system' and 'Research Reports' by the Korean Private University Library Association. The second was from the results of surveys and interviews with librarians from 20 university libraries. And the third was from the results of surveys with library users in two sample university libraries.

  • The object of this study is to compare qualitative level between Korean academic books and American academic ones evaluated by faculty members in Korea. To achieve this study, the data were produced by the questionnaires from faculty members of the Chonbuk National University. The major conclusions are summarized as follows: 1. As a whole, American academic books are evaluated more excellent than Korean academic ones. American academic books have more appropriateness of citation, level of content completion, usefulness of content, clearness of expression and accuracy of data than Korean academic ones 2. This study shows that American academic books are evaluated more excellent than Korean academic ones in every subject. 3. The respondents who had studied in the United States of America for more than two years evaluate American academic books more excellent than those for less than two years. 4. Regardless of the periods of study in America, however, most of respondents evaluate American academic books better than Korean academic ones in all fields.

  • The collections of university libraries such as books in academic disciplines and dissertations are much used to support education of students and research activities of faculty members. Most of such materials naturally contain unique terms frequently and exclusively used in specific academic disciplines. Therefore, it is possible to infer the latest research trend in or correlations among various disciplines by analyzing those terms. In this study, the trend was analyzed by extracting technical terms from the metatadata for collections in the field of computer science of two university libraries in Korea. By comparing these terms with the trend of terms which appeared in dissertations and domestic scholarly articles, the relation between collections of university libraries and research trend in this particular academic field was analyzed.

  • This study attempts to investigate the current practice of electronic resources in the academic libraries and to explore the changes of paradigm in the organization of information. It reviewed how academic libraries have acquired and organized electronic resources. It also investigated the library home pages of 30 academic libraries in order to identify the category of electronic resources, metadata, and linkage methods with various material types such as printed resources and theses. To perform extended functions of library catalogs, it is essential for academic libraries to manage the metadata of various resources together and provide enhanced access and linkage of related resources.
