  • The expansion of open education and the 7th revision of educational curriculum have brought big changes in the school facilities. In response to the integrated curriculum for the first and second grades of elementary school, various plans, such as open classroom, expanded classroom size, and the installation of multi-purpose space, have been attempted. However, such plans have appeared in the form of an open classroom--a uniform spatial composition. As a result, a plan for unit learning space to support the educational curriculum and activities for low grade levels is still insufficient. In the case of advanced countries, a lot of studies on space are being actively conducted to develop the creativity of children and to facilitate free-style learning, and such space is actually applied to a real educational environment. Therefore, this study will analyze the spatial composition of unit learning space for low grade level elementary schools in Korea. From the cases of advanced countries, a more concrete proposal will be suggested to diversify unit learning space for low grade levels.

  • The purpose of this study is to find problems and to provide architectural design standards of the Learning Space Unit(L.S.U.) in Elementary Schools through the Post-occupancy Evaluation(POE). In this study, we found six major problems of the type of the L.S.U. in elementary schools. More than 50% of users expressed dissatisfactions in these items : size, safety, cooling facility, noise, privacy and primary meaning for its original purpose. After the interrelation-analysis, we checked pros and cons about each forms of L.S.U. It is the result of analysis of the layout method in L.S.U. 1) "$8.4m{\times}8.4m$" classroom unit got the highest positive responses 2) "2-classroom type" and "4-classroom type" got higher score than "3-classroom type" 3) "Whole faced type" 1) made more active Multi-space than "Partial faced type" 4) prefered prepared "Open-classroom" to "Closed-classroom" 5) 'Zoning type between L.S.U.s' couldn't influence to user's responses. Designers can consult those informations when they plan a new, remodeling and additional elementary school.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the planning characteristics of contemporary Japanese elementary schools. Fifteen schools, that have new planning trends or design ideas have been selected and analyzed. The planning characteristics of schools identified by plan analyses are summarized as follows. First, space programs of schools are diverse, especially in support facilities, gymnasiums and auditoriums. These spaces can be used by community members. So it is assumed that needs of communities are reflected in space programs of schools. Second, various types of unit learning spaces consisting of multipurpose spaces and classrooms embodied in case schools tell the differentiation in the structure of unit learning spaces. Third, grouped with gymnasiums or auditoriums, special instructional spaces constitute community zones where school facilities are open to public. Fourth, replacing the monotonous circulation systems by corridors, multipurpose hall-type space organization systems make surrounding spaces more activated and complex and the multipurpose hall itself becomes the central part of schools. Finally, outdoor spaces are designed to have convenient access and approach zones to school precincts are linked with city street.

  • This study is the second that aims at offering the basic information on the appropriate spatial organization of the special classes by looking at the relationship between a group of learning activities and a group of playing activities in Elementary and Middle Schools The learning space unit of the special classes should be more flexible for the various learning activities and be prepared in order to correspond to the needs of a territory for different learning appeared according to the degree of handicap, learning ability and the contents of learning. This study dealt with the learning space unit to tackle the problems of special classes. In fact, it is unwise to offer so many different kinds of learning spaces in every school. Due to the manifold and multiple characteristics of handicap, the problem of special classes should be approached by the overall educational system of special educational facilities rather than by a special classes space alone. In this respect, it can be said that this problem should be tackled by reorganization of the special classes in the community through specialization and network system of special class facilities in order to make more effective educational environment.

  • This paper aims to analyse facilities and characteristics of management for 21 model schools' open education system. So, we analyzed the class management and the methods of open education, teacher's mind, the shape and form of study group and we investigated teachers' satisfaction rate about the physical space. As a result, it is considered that the change for structure of learning space unit is needed because of the limitation in standard class size by the rule for construction. Considering the decrease of real using space by the space of learning materials or learning furniture, it should enlarge the structure of learning space unit or decrease the number of students. And to use multipurpose space practically as a place of study, it need that the multiple support of study program for teachers by government, support in course of study, giving training opportunity to teachers, distribution of personal management.

  • I suggested the design learning environment based on affordance concept approach for supporting and improving learners' behavior and outcome for convergent design education in this study. The design learning space should be applied teaching and learning activity, especially learners' behavior, physical space condition to support the design thinking process. The design learning space needs openness, individuality and connectivity to support the learners' behavioral to immerse, participate, cooperate, understand, think and fulfill the design thinking process. The composition principles of the learning environment for convergent design education supports communication and collaboration among members for independence and interaction. The spaces for design research and teaching needs high privacy while facilitating visual communications through special materials and wall structure design. Also, for connectivity to improve the learners' physical and visual contact, the environment of the classrooms requires flexibility and mobility by providing an open space integrating unit cells for realizing learning purpose. These are provided by formed of an open structure for inducing visual communication and physical contact to involve the design activities and the mutual interchange.

  • The purpose of this study is to calculate the size of unit space of the classroom in elementary school. The curriculum of Elementary school has changed since 1960. It has been reflected the architectural plan of classroom of the nationwide elementary school. However the Ministry of Education repealed the statute about the facilities of the schools on September in 1997 and the new education curriculum-the 7th curriculum-demands various activities in the classroom. So we need to another size of unit space of the classroom in elementary school because the size of unit space will affect the quality of education. This study represent that the size of unit plan is based on the size of human body, education curriculum, the number limit of classroom and teaching tools. It's generally known that a part of human body size has an invariable proportion with human's status. In this study, regression analysis is used to find out a part of the body-size of Korean. Through this analysis, status, age and weight remarkably relate with a part of human body-size. Then the size of unit plan of the classroom is calculated by the part of body-size and the type of desk arrangement.
