  • This work examines the most viable nuclear technology options for future underwater designs that would meet high safety standards as well as good economic potential, for construction in the 2030-2040 timeframe. The top five concepts selected from a survey of 13 nuclear technologies were compared to a small modular pressurized water reactor (PWR) designed with a conventional layout. In order of smallest to largest primary system size where the reactor and all safety systems are contained, the top five designs were: (1) a lead-bismuth fast reactor based on the Russian SVBR-100; (2) a novel organic cooled reactor; (3) an innovative superheated water reactor; (4) a boiling water reactor based on Toshiba's LSBWR; and (5) an integral PWR featuring compact steam generators. A similar study on potential attractive power cycles was also performed. A condensing and recompression supercritical $CO_2$ cycle and a compact steam Rankine cycle were designed. It was found that the hull size required by the reactor, safety systems and power cycle can be significantly reduced (50-80%) with the top five designs compared to the conventional PWR. Based on the qualitative economic consideration, the organic cooled reactor and boiling water reactor designs are expected to be the most cost effective options.

  • Having an awareness of the ongoing conception of Honam-Jeju, Korea-Japan, and Korea-China subsea tunnels for accommodating the railway, this paper investigates immersion tube tunnel technology, one of the underwater tunnel construction methods. This paper analyses the current status of immersed tube tunnels according to their location and function. This paper summarises the dredging methods and briefly introduces the muck disposal facility. Also introduced are the case studies where measures were taken to mitigate the impact of dredging on the surrounding marine environment. This paper also explains how the tunnel elements are connected underwater using an immersion joint. This paper classifies the foundation methods into bedding and ground improvement methods and provides summaries, including their environmental impact associated with drill cuttings and cementitious binders.

  • Offshore wind power is increasingly regarded as a viable solution for reducing greenhous emissions due to the construction of wind farms and their superior power generation efficiency. Submarine power cables play a crucial role in transmitting the electricity generated offshore to land. To monitor cables and identify points of failure, analyzing the location or depth of burial of submarine cables is necessary. This study reviewed the technology and research for detecting submarine power cables, which were categorized into seismic/acoustic, electromagnetic, and magnetic exploration. Seismic/acoustic waves are primarily used for detecting submarine power cables by installing equipment on ships. Electromagnetic and magnetic exploration detects cables by installing equipment on unmanned underwater vehicles, including autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) and remotely operated vihicles (ROV). This study serves as a foundational resource in the field of submarine power cable detection.

  • In this paper, optimization of cylindrical shells under external pressure to minimize its weight has been studied. Buckling equations are based on standard of ABS underwater vehicles. Dimension and type of circumferential stiffeners, and its distance from each other are assumed as variables of optimization problem. Considering the extent of these variables, genetic algorithms have been used for optimization. To study the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the shell and its fabrication according to the existing standards, geometrical and construction as well as stress and buckling constraints have been used in optimization algorithm and also penalty functions are applied to eliminate weak model. Finally, the best model which has the minimum weight considering the applied pressure has been presented.

  • Explosion Bulge Test has been carried out in order to evaluate base metal and weldment of high strength steels which used for submarine and aircraft carrier. High strength steels such as DS80/100/130 and PFS80/100 were developed by ADD and POSCO. In future, these materials will be used for the construction of larger submarine and aircraft carrier, and EBT is necessary to certificate hull materials for these. EBT methode in air and underwater was developed by ADD, and this report described the test procedure of EBT and the results of EBT for high strength steels.

  • In this study, a numerical study was carried out to simulate the expansion of ground borehole by pulse discharge technology using finite element analysis. Considering the mortar in the borehole as an acoustic medium and the surrounding soil as an elasto-plastic material, the strong shock wave developed by the pulse discharge was modeled using the underwater explosion model. The ground expansion was simulated based on a coupled acoustic-structural analysis with varying properties of mortar and soil, and the behavior between acoustic-structural interface.

  • Due to the uneasy controllable qualities of the substructures such as pile and foundation, which are laid on underground, geotechnical engineers have applied conservative criteria to them. Therefore, the specification criterion of cast-in-situ concrete pile, which allows only one fourth of the compressive strength of structural capacity, has forced geotechnical designers to consider the most uneconomical design regardless of satisfying the grade of quality-control, required performance, construction cost and so on. Thus, in this study, we proposed the less conservative criteria on the strength of concrete pile, based on the experimental testing results of cast-in-situ concrete piles.

  • In order to understand the relationship of depositional environment between fluvial and estuarine-embayment in Han River system, including depositional change in main Han River, more than 250 bottom sediment and 70 suspended sediment were analyzed with hydrologic data. Based on the previous data, the study area can be divided into two environment(fluvial and estuarine-embayment) by Singok underwater dam. The gravelly facies occurs in the South and North Han Rivers and sandy and silty facies occupies in the main Han River. Depositional environment of main Han River changed mainly because of limited sediment transport and hydrological condition. In the estuarine-embayment environment, coarse-grained sediments are dominant in tidal channel and of shore whereas fine and poorly sorted sediments are observed in coastal area. During moderate period, relationship between fluvial-estuarine-embayment system is discontinuou s because of flow restriction by artificial construction such as dam and underwater dam, so that each river system characterizes the individual environment. Fluvial and estuarine system is influenced by tide and, thus, transition zone of estuarine- embayment system moves landward. During flooding period, however, each river system is integrated as continuous depositional system by high discharge and, thus, transition zone of fluvial-estuarine-embayment system moves seaward. For further detailed systems about the lower Singok under-water dam, joint research of South-North Korea should be necessary.

  • In the construction and operation of large marine structure, hazard risk analysis is one of important factors. Therefore, this paper investigates the hazard risk indexes and evaluates the risk level in the construction and operation of SFT on the basis of expert survey and Fuzzy analytic hierarchy process. Hazard risk is divided into natural hazard risk (earthquake, typhoon, tsunami, and ice collision) and human factor hazard risk (fire, explosion, traffic accident, ship or submarine collision). Also, the influence of hazard risk indexes on SFT was evaluated in tunnel tube, supporting system, ventilation tower, foundation, and connection part. As the hazard risk level of SFT is compared with those of bridge, underwater tunnel, and immersed tunnel, the intrinsic risk level of SFT was evaluated. Tsunami and earthquake had higher risk level in natural hazard risk, and the risk levels of fire and explosion were higher in human factor hazard risk. Hazard risk level of SFT was 1.4 times higher than immersed tunnel, and 3.2 times higher than bridge.
