When the public surveying system was introduced in 1961, large scale surveying performances, such as infrastructure construction work, were dominant. However, due to changes in the environment, most of the current surveying performances focused on small scale underground facilities. The method of surveying underground facilities is as follows: "method of measurement before refilling after burying the pipeline" and "method of using exploration after refilling." There are advantages and disadvantages to each method. It became difficult to obtain the accuracy of the location of the underground facilities due to the fact that there were sections of the pipeline that had not been observed through exploration. Therefore, the 2017 performance evaluation regulations were revised. The revision included the addition of the "Underground Facilities Creation Period," a system that allows for surveys to be evaluated based on actual measurements. However, in this particular field, concerns about the advantages of exploration and the purpose of this study was to investigate the background and purpose of the limitations of the survey have been continuously raised. The purpose of this study was to investigate the background and purpose of the public surveying system and to identify the proportion of underground facilities surveying in comparison to public surveying. This study conducted surveys on the implementers of public surveying and those who did the actual surveying. The researcher has summarized the improvements that incorporate the analysis results and the field comments in the revised performance evaluation regulations in 2017.

Up to now a wide variety of researches on inpipe inspection robots have been introduced, but it still seems to be difficult to construct a robot providing mobility sufficient to navigate inside the complicated configuration of underground pipelines. This paper introduces a robot called MRINSPECT IV(Multifunctional Robotic Crawler for inpipe inSPECTion IV) for the inspection of urban gas pipelines with a nominal 4-inch inside diameter. The proposed robot can freely move along the basic configuration of pipelines such as along horizontal or vertical pipelines. Moreover it can travel along reducers, elbows, and steer in the branches by modulating the speeds of driving modules. Especially, its capability for steering in tile three-dimensional pipeline configuration has a competative edge over the other ones and provides excellent mobility in navigation. Its critical points in the design and construction are introduced and results of experiments are given.
Methods for estimating structural reliability using probability ideas are well established. When the residual ultimate strength of a buried pipeline is exceeded the limit, breakage becomes imminent and the overall reliability of the pipe distribution network is reduced. This paper is concerned with estimating structural failure of underground flexible pipes due to corrosion induced excessive deflection, buckling, wall thrust and bending stress subject to externally applied loading. With changes of pipe wall thickness due to corrosion, the moment of inertia and the cross-sectional area of pipe wall are directly changed with time. Consequently, the chance of survival or the reliability of the pipe material is decreased over time. One numerical example has been presented for a buried steel pipe to predict the probability of failure using Hasofer-Lind and Rackwitz-Fiessler algorithm and Monte Carlo simulation. Then the parametric study and sensitivity analysis have been conducted on the reliability of pipeline with different influencing factors, e.g. pipe thickness, diameter, backfill height etc.
The risk assessments for gas leak in underground pipeline are conducted about the explosion accident of AHYUN-DONG underground service-base on December, 1994(Gaussian gas, LNG) and the accident of TAEGU subway on April 1995(Heavy gas LPG). We have calculated the total mass of gas release and have respected the efficient of explosions with report of the spot. The dispersion zones of LNG were calculated as large as fifteen times to those of LPG by ALOHA. The effects of thermal radiation from LNG explosion were assumed less than that from LPG by PHAST.

The advancement of electronics and telecommunication technologies has forced the risk management system for underground metallic structures to evolve into the remote monitoring and control system. Especially, facilities such as gas pipelines, oil pipelines and water distribution lines might make hazardous effect on human safety without continuous monitoring and control. As a result, pipeline engineers have applied cathodic protection system to prevent the degradation of their facilities by corrosion and carried out a periodic monitoring of the pipe-to-soil (P/S) potentials at numberous test boxes along their pipelines. The latter action on a road in downtowns, however, is so much dangerous that the inspectors should be ready to suffer the threatening of their lives and maintenance. In order to minimize these social costs and hazards, a stand-alone type corrosion monitoring equipment which can be installed in test box, store the P/S data for given Belied and send the data by wired/wireless telecommunications is under development. In order to obtain the exact P/S data, however, a reference electrode should be located as close to the pipeline as possible. Actually, the measured potential by a conventional portable reference electrode contain inevitably an IR drop portion caused by the current flow from the cathodic protection rectifier or the subway railroad. To minimize this error, it is recommended that the reference electrode should be buried within 10 cm from the pipeline. In this paper, we describe the design parameters for fabricating the permanent type reference electrode and the characteristics of the developed reference electrode.
MFL PIG (Magnetic Flux Leakage Pipeline Inspection Gauge) is called the system which detects the defect for underground pipelines by using magnetic flux leakage method in nondestructive testing. This method is very suitable for testing pipelines because pipeline has high magnetic permeability. MFL PIG generates the magnetic fields to the pipe axially oriented, and detect the signal of leakage flux by using hall sensor. However, MFL PIG is hard to detect the axially oriented crack with small size because the magnetic flux leakage is not enough to be occurred. To detect the small size and axially oriented crack, the circumferential MFL (CMFL) PIG is being proposed and it can maximize the leakage flux for the axial crack by performing magnetic fields circumferentially on the pipe. In this paper, CMFL PIG is applied to detect the axially oriented crack with small size and the analysis for the distribution and the amplitude of the leakage flux signal is performed by using three dimensional finite element method. From sensing signals, the method how to determine the shape of axially oriented cracks is proposed and verified with experiment.
MFL (Magnetic flux leakage) type nondestructive testing has been used for inspection of underground gas pipelines to find metal defects by detecting magnetic leakage signal. Because the underground gas pipeline is exposed by environment such as high pressure with great humidity, external defects are easily formed on the surface of pipelines and they are being grouped respectively. These adjacent defects cause the signal distortion of leakage flux so that it is hard to estimate the shape information of defects. In this paper, we performed to study of the signal distortion and compensating method for multiple defects in MFL type nondestructive testing system by using 3D FEM simulation. This paper proposes the basic algorithm of defect signal analysis on multiple defects on the surface of 30 inch diameter pipeline.

Underground facilities were constructed as needed by various management organizations, the result of which was the disordered and scattered underground spaces. This phenomenon can be viewed as the main cause of safety accidents in the underground space. To solve this problem, research on systematic construction and management of underground facilities should be conducted. Therefore, to improve the accuracy and the quality of information and to facilitate the systematic construction and management of underground facility information, this study aims to establish a 3D data model that conforms to international spatial information standards for pipeline underground facilities and to implement the data model to enable visualization. The result of this study can be used to improve the consistency of information not only between underground facilities, but also the correspondence between above ground and underground facilities. As such, this study has academic significance in that it presents an integrated data model that includes various objects in the ground and underground spaces and enables interoperability between diverse domain data.
Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) occurring in underground buried pipes of API 5L X65 steel was investigated. MIC is a corrosion phenomenon caused by microorganisms in soil; it affects steel materials in wet atmosphere. The microstructure and mechanical properties resulting from MIC were analyzed by OM, SEM/EDS, and mapping. Corrosion of pipe cross section was composed of ① surface film, ② iron oxide, and ③ surface/internal microbial corrosive by-product similar to surface corrosion pattern. The surface film is an area where concentrations of C/O components are on average 65 %/16 %; the main components of Fe Oxide were measured and found to be 48Fe-42O. The MIC area is divided into surface and inner areas, where high concentrations of N of 6 %/5 % are detected, respectively, in addition to the C/O component. The high concentration of C/O components observed on pipe surfaces and cross sections is considered to be MIC due to the various bacteria present. It is assumed that this is related to the heat-shrinkable sheet, which is a corrosion-resistant coating layer that becomes the MIC by-product component. The MIC generated on the pipe surface and cross section is inferred to have a high concentration of N components. High concentrations of N components occur frequently on surface and inner regions; these regions were investigated and Na/Mg/Ca basic substances were found to have accumulated as well. Therefore, it is presumed that the corrosion of buried pipes is due to the MIC of the NRB (nitrate reducing bacteria) reaction in the soil.

This study presents the behavior characteristics of buried three-layered pipeline subjected to pile driving loads. The analysis considered the driving energy caused by 7 tonf of ram weight and 1.2m of stroke. Also the distance from vibration resource to pipeline varies in 5m to 30m. The vibration velocity and stress are investigated at the center of pipeline in longitudinal direction. In the same cover depth, attenuation ratio of vibration velocity and von Mises stresses for distance increment has shown a decreasing trend. The maximum stress occurs at the top and bottom for the inner pipe, however, an irregular stress distribution is found for the outer pipe.
