  • Comprehension of physical properties distribution of underground cavity must be made primarily to show the clear image of the state of the cavity. A physical scale model experiment is executed assuming that underground cavity in filled with air or water of different ratio. The state of cavity wall is considered wet. Cavity model is made of agar. As a experimental result, even if the cavity wall is wet, high air and water ratio cavity shows high anomaly.

A Numerical Study on the Occurrence Scope of Underground Cavity and Relaxation Zone Considering Sewerage Damage Width and Soil Depth (하수관거 파손폭과 토피고를 고려한 지중 공동 및 이완영역 발생 규모에 관한 수치해석적 연구)

  • This paper described a result of finite element analysis considering sewerage damage scale and soil depth, in order to analyze quantitatively for cavity and relaxation zone of underground due to sewerage damage. The mechanical model, which was verified by previous studies, was applied to the finite element analysis. In addition, the mechanical behavior of the soil around the sewerage damage due to the soil loss was simulated by using the forced displacement. Based on finite element analysis results, characteristics of the void ratio distribution, ground subsidence, and shear stress distribution according to sewerage damage scale and soil depth were analyzed. And then, The boundaries of the underground cavity and relaxation zone were determined by using the shear stress reduction characteristics of the ground. Also, an occurrence scope of the cavity and relaxation zone was quantitatively evaluated by the change of sewerage damage scale and soil depth.

  • Ground cave-in is usually initiated by the formation of cavity within the ground due to soil loss. When the location of the cavity is deep in the ground, the detection of the cavity is not easy. Then it is possible that the hidden cavity expands for a long time to eventually cause sudden large-scale collapse. A case of large scale ground collapse in the old fill ground was studied and described in this paper. The underground cavity appeared to be caused by subsurface erosion deep in the ground and to expand/extend upward till it was ended by the catastrophic ground failure. It highlighted the importance of proper drainage work in a large scale land fill.

Investigation Study on Underground Cavity Scale Estimation Based on GPR Exploration (지하공동 규모 평가를 위한 GPR 탐사 기반의 조사 연구)

  • Purpose: Ground subsidence due to cavity can bring about various problems, such as casualties, decrease of the safety of the structures, and indirect social costs. Therefore, ground subsidence should be prevented through the exploration and recovery of the cavity under the pavements. Method: In this study, GPR exploration method was carried out on both actual roadway and mock-up site to compensate for the problems caused by excavation and restoration process. Result: This study compared the cavity scales obtained from GPR exploration results and the direct excavation of the identified cavity. It was confirmed that the predicted soil depth by GPR exploration was similar to the identified soil depth, but the predicted cavity scale by GPR exploration overestimated the longitudinal and cross-sectional widths compared to the identified cavity scale. Conclusion: Based on the correlation between the predicted cavity scales by GPR exploration, it is possible to qualitatively estimate the cavity scales using the empirical formula proposed in this study.

Laboratory Experiments of a Ground-Penetrating Radar for Detecting Subsurface Cavities in the Vicinity of a Buried Pipe (매설관 주변 지하 공동 탐지를 위한 지하 탐사 레이다의 모의실험)

  • In this paper, a feasibility on a ground-penetrating radar for detecting subsurface cavities near buried pipes has been investigated. The experimental setup was implemented by employing an impulse ground-penetrating radar system, a xy Cartesian coordinate robot, an underground material filled tank, a metal pipe and a simulated cavity model. In particular, the simulated cavity model was constructed by packing Styrofoam chips and balls, which have both similar electrical properties to an air-filled cavity and a solid shape. Through typical three experiments, B-scan data of the radar have been acquired and displayed as 2-D gray-scale images. According to the comparison of B-scan images, we show that the subsurface cavities near the buried pipes can be detected by using the radar survey.

Model Test of Lining for Estimation of Tunnel Soundness (터널 건전도 평가를 위한 라이닝 모델실험)

  • Recently, many deformations in tunnel such as crack and leakage were occulted. Specially, the defects of tunnel lining have been a serious problem in safety and stability many repair works for maintenance in tunnel have been carried out. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the structural cracking for countermeasure in deformed tunnel and to investigate on the characteristics of lining system and the soundness of tunnel. In this study model tests for tunnel lining were carried out using test apparatus and centrifuge, In the direct loading test, the prototype was Kyungbu high-speed railway tunnel and the scale is 1/10, and lining models were made of concrete. Test conditions included load conditions such as direction, shape and type, lining conditions such as single and double lining, thickness, and reinforcement. In centrifuge model test, the prototype was Seoul subway tunnel and the scale is 1/100, and lining models were made of aluminum and hydrostone. Test conditions included tunnel defects such as thickness shortage. behind cavity and longitudinal cracks, reinforcement methods such as epoxy, grouting and carbon sheet. From these model tests , the characteristics of deformation and failure for tunnel lining were estimated, and the structural behaviors of deformed lining and the effects of repair and reinforcement for tunnel lining were researched.

New tunnel reinforcement method using pressurized cavity expansion concept (천공홀 가압 팽창 개념을 도입한 터널 보조 신공법 연구)

  • A new tunnel auxiliary method is proposed in this paper which utilizes the concept of cavity expansion for tuunel reinforcement by forming an umbrella arch on the roof of tunnel. When an inflatable pipe is inserted and expanded by pressure in the bore hole of umbrella arch, the ground around the bore hole can be compacted so that the stress condition above the tunnel perimeter is favorably changed. In order to verify the reinforcement effect of new concept, pilot-scale chamber test, trapdoor test and numerical analysis were performed and compared. In pilot-scale chamber test, three types of inflatable pipes are tested to verify the capability of expansion, and the results arc compared with analytical results obtained by applying cavity expansion theory and with results obtained from finite clement analysis, and the experimental results showed agreeable matches with analytical and numerical ones. Numerical analysis of a tunnel and trapdoor test applied with the inflatable pipes are also performed to figure out the reinforcement effect of the proposed techniques, and the results implied that the new method with 3 directional inflatable pipe (no pressure to downward direction) can contribute to reduce tunnel convergence and face settlement.

A Study on the Failure Cause of Large Scale Rock Slope in Limestone Quarries (석회석 광산에서 발생한 대규모 암반사면의 붕괴원인 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The target of this study is large scale rock slope collapsed by around 7 pm on August, 2012, which is located at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ limestone quarries of Gangneung city, Gangwondo. The slope prior to the collapse is formed as the height of about 200 m and the average inclination of $45^{\circ}$. The estimated amount of the collapse is about $1,500,000m^3$ with respect to the slope after the collapse. Geotechnical and field investigations such as boring, geophysical prospecting, surface geological survey, geological lineaments, borehole imaging, metric 3D imaging, experimental and field test, mining work by year, and daily rainfall were performed to find the cause of rock slope failure. Various analyzes using slope mass rating, stereonet projection, limit equilibrium method, continuum and non-continuum model were conducted to check of the stability of the slope. It is expected that the cause of slope failure from the results of various analysis and survey is due to the combined factors such as topography, rainfall, rock type and quality, discontinuities, geo-structural characteristics as the limestone cavity and fault zones, but the failure of slope in case of the analysis without the limestone cavity is not occurred. Safe factor of 0.66 was obtained from continuum analysis of the slope considering the limestone cavity, so the ultimate causes of slope failure is considered to be due to the influence of limestone cavity developed along fault zone.

Analysis of the Effect of Pavement Crack Depth of the Cavity Management Grade (포장 균열 깊이가 공동 관리 등급에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • Purpose: The Seoul Metropolitan Government classifies the cavity risks into emergency, priority, general, and observation grades in consideration of the cavity size, asphalt pavement thickness, and pavement depth based on the cavity management grade criteria of Seoul. In this study, the depth of cracking was measured at 17 cracks identified by checking the pavement condition of the cavity at 265 cavities found in the 2019 cavity investigation service. Method: In the first phase, crack width and depth were measured using a vernier caliper, taper gauge, and depth gauge to check the cracks of the identified cavities. In the second phase, the location of the largest crack in the upper road surface was confirmed, and A.C. was drilled to further measure the crack depth. Results: As a result, the cavity management level was raised in nine of the 17 test cavity identified. Therefore, in case of emergency and priority recovery, the grade should be adjusted according to the depth of pavement crack and the thickness of residual A.C. pavement. Conclusion: In the case of cracks in the upper part of the cavity, the crack progression must be determined through the perforation and the remaining asphalt concrete thickness must be determined to determine the cavity grade.

Model test on concrete placement method of tunnel lining due to tunnel size (터널 단면크기에 따른 콘크리트 라이닝 타설 방법에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper presents the concrete placement method of tunnel lining to improve the concrete lining quality such as cavities, cracks of the concrete lining. In order to perform this study, the occurred cracks initially in the concrete lining are reviewed and analyzed. From the review, the improvement methods to minimize the defects of concrete lining are suggested. To confirm the efficiency of new concrete placement approaches and the scale of tunnel section, two types of the scaled model tests are carried out and analyzed in model scales of 1/20 and 1/7. The 1/20 scaled model tests are carried out using the existing experimental rigs. The 1/7 scaled model tests are carried out in new test rigs developed in this study. The concrete placement rates obtained from the experimental results are analyzed and compared with themselves. In the existing concrete placement method, 1/20 scale model test than 1/7 scale model test have increased concrete placement rates but It is clearly found that two kinds of experimental studies show the similar results in improvement methods and good agreement with new concrete placing approach.
