This paper presents the application of a neural network for prediction of the unconfined compressive strength from physical properties and schmidt hardness number on rock samples. To investigate the suitability of this approach, the results of analysis using a neural network are compared to predictions obtained by statistical relations. The data sets containing 55 rock sample records which are composed of sandstone and shale were assembled in Daegu area. They were used to learn the neural network model with the back-propagation teaming algorithm. The rock characteristics as the teaming input of the neural network are: schmidt hardness number, specific gravity, absorption, porosity, p-wave velocity and S-wave velocity, while the corresponding unconfined compressive strength value functions as the teaming output of the neural network. A data set containing 45 test results was used to train the networks with the back-propagation teaming algorithm. Another data set of 10 test results was used to validate the generalization and prediction capabilities of the neural network.

This paper investigates engineering characteristics of lightweight soils mixed with air foam and tire powder. Lightweight soils could be used as foundation materials, back-fills of reducing vibrating or abutment, and so on. Unconfined and triaxial compression tests were carried out to analyze strength and deformation characteristics of lightweight soils by changing target moist unit weight and cement contents. In comparison with strength characteristics of two different kinds of lightweight soils with same most unit weights ($13kN/m^3$), unconfined compression tests showed similar compressive strength, however, triaxial compression tests showed that compressive strength of lightweight soils mixed with waste tire powder was relatively larger strength than that of lightweight soils mixed with air foam because of elasticity of waste tire powder. Also, unconfined and triaxial compressive strengths of most of lightweight soils increase with increases of moist unit weight and cement contents. However, the strength of lightweight soils mixed with air foam under $11kN/m^3$, when moist unit weight exceeds a certain cement contents, decreases even though cement contents increase because of the effect in a void gap of air foam.
The physical characteristics of the marine clay in the Korean Peninsula, specifically Pusan areas of the south coast of Korea, were previously studied and reliable data from harbor construction projects were used for the relationship analysis of geotechnical strength parameters. The sample of marine clay classified to ML, MH, CL, CH and ML-CL from USCS were included for the analysis while the samples classified to SC were excluded in order to raise the degree of data analysis. Geotechnical strength properties, such as undrained shear strength, sensitivity ratio, and effective friction angle were analyzed and evaluated using the data obtained from unconfined compression test, triaxial compression test and field vane test. Abnormal values were extracted through statistical analysis. Moreover, the reliability of the results was improved by performing the evaluation of disturbance. Linear regression analysis was used for the relationship analysis, between undrained shear strength and depth. The relationship equation between undrained shear strength and depth was derived from the analysis of unconfined and triaxial compression test data of samples obtained at same location. Consequently, The relationship between depth and undrained shear strength is $S_u=0.015148D+0.04624$ and the undrained shear strength derived from the triaxial compression test was estimated to be about 1.26 of derived from the unconfined compression test.
Unconfined compression test (UC) has been widely used to determine the undrained shear strength ($c_u$) of clay, because it is convenient and economical. However, UC can not represent the behaviour of in-situ stress condition and the strength obtained by the test is generally underestimated compared to that of triaxial compression, due to no confining pressure. Therefore, a simple and practical method to correct the ($c_u$) for sample disturbance and to be used in geotechnical practice is needed. This study is aimed at proposing the method to estimate in-situ undrained shear strength from UC with suction measurement. The proposed method is based on theoretical shear strength equation of perfect sample (Noorany & Seed, 1965), and effective overburden stress and analysis results ($A_f,\phi'$) of effective stress behaviour by UC are needed for the equation. The shear resistance angle ($\phi'$) can be simply estimated through the result that $K_f$-line slope of the UC is 1.6 times higher than that of triaxial compression test. The result of this study shows that the measured strength by this method is very similar to that of the undrained shear strength by triaxial compression test (CK$_0$UC).
Coal ash of industial by-products was not recycled about 30% in total emissions. Moreover, it caused environmental pollution as well as wasted unnecessary expenses and time. Currently, fly ash(FA) is recycled as construction material however ponded ash(PA) is mostly buried. Lightweight foamed Controlled Low-Strength Materials(CLSM) evaluated in this study reduces unit weight by mixing foam in the traditional Controlled Low-Strength Material and has lightweight and flowability to be available for backfill materials in construction. Flow test, unconfined compressive strength test, and foamed-slurry unit weight test were performed in this study and the applicability of lightweight foamed CLSM for construction materials was evaluated. The results indicate that the mixture ratio(PA:FA) ranging from 70:30 to 50:50, cement of 7%, foam of 2~3%, and water content of 26.5~29.5% were required to satisfy the following standards such as flow value(i.e., 20cm), unconfined compressive strength(i.e., 0.8~1.2MPa), and foamed-slurry unit weight(i.e., $12{\sim}15kN/m^3$).

Recently, the construction method of high pressure jet-grouting is in wide-use, for the purpose of structure foundation ground, reinforcing of ground behind propped retaining walls and cut-off in order to perform safe construction of underground excavation work. This study was performed a serious of tests of field permeability and unconfined compressive strength upon ground improved established on the ground behind propped retaining walls and examined proper jet mechanism by changing the construction parameter value of high pressure jet-grouting. In addition, we got the conclusion like the followings as a result of inspecting the condition of earth pressure distribution and deformation, using elasto-plastic method and FEM. 1. In that characteristics of strength of ground improved, with the same condition of construction parameter, unconfined compressive strength of sand gravel is shown bigger than that of silty sand by about 1.6 times and cut-off effect is shown to have effect of reducing the permeability of original ground by about 10$^{-2}$ ~10$^{-3}$ cm/s. 2. As a result of analysis of figures of horizontal displacing quantity of propped retaining walls materials regarding before and after High pressure jet- grouting through FEM, the reducing quantity of 0.1~0.3mm in maximum horizontal displacement is shown.
This study investigated the engineering characteristics of non-sintering binder-stabilized mixtures consisting of different ratios of a hardening agent(3%, 6%, 9%, 12%) for recycling industrial by-products through several series of laboratory tests. The hardening agents consisted of two kinds of non-sintering binders(NSB-1, NSB-2), which were developed by using inter-chemical reactions among blast furnace slag, phospho-gypsum, and an alkali activator. In addition, ordinary Portland cement(OPC) was used to compare the engineering characteristics of the stabilized mixture. An unconfined compressive test showed that the unconfined compressive strength increased with the curing time and mixing ratio. Experimental test results indicated that the 7-day strength of the NSB-1 mixture was similar to that of the OPC mixture. However, its 28-day strength was higher than that of the OPC mixture. The secant module of elasticity showed a range of $E_{50}=(42-109)q_u$ regardless of the agents. Based on the results of triaxial tests, the cohesion and friction angle increased with the mixing ratio.

There were huge damages of human beings and their properties in many areas of the basin of the Nak-Dong river by the unusual weather and the localized downpour recently. In this research against disasters, we want to know the special quality of strength of the cemented sand that is mixed with cement and poor-graded sand which is the materials of riverbed in the basin of the Nak-Dong river as levee's material. For that, we want to provide the fundamental data which need in the examination of adaptation of levee's material, design and analysis by investigating compressive strength by curing period and cement ratio, elastic modulus and stress by transformation from compaction test, CBR test, unconfined compression test, triaxial compression test as changing ratio of sand and cement from 2% to 8% at two points in the basin of the Nak-Dong river.

This study was conducted to obtain the most effective distribution of grain size and the optimum lime content for lime-soil stabilization. To achieve the aim, the change of consistency, the characteristics of compaction and unconfined compressive strength were tested by adding of 0, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 percent lime by weight for all soils adjusted by given ratios of sand to clay. The results obtained were as follows; 1. There was a tendency that the plasticity index of lime-soil mixture was decreased by increasing the amount of lime, whereas the liquid limit was varied irregularly and the plastic limit was increased. 2. With the addition of more lime, the optimum moisture content of lime-soil mixture was increased, and the maximum dry density was decreased. 3. The optimum lime content of lime-soil mixture was varied from soil to soil, and the less amount of small grain size, the less value of optimum lime content. 4. The optimum distribution of grain size for lime-soil mixture was in the soil, having the ratio of about 60 percent of cohesive clay and about 40 percent of sand by weight. 5. In the soil having fine grain size, the effect of curing appeared for long periods of time, whereas the increasing rate of unconfined compressive strength was great on the soil of coarse grain size in the earlier stage of curing period.

The soil samples used in this study were prepared with the residual granite soils passed through the #4 sieve and obtained from Pocheon in Gyeonggi-Ki do. Specifically, five types of samples were prepared. Sample A which is a natural state soil was classified as SM according to the uses. Samples of B, C, D, and E were prepared by mixing Sample A with bentonite and were classified as SC according to the uses. The plasticity indexes of samples B, C, D, and E were 15, 25, 30, and 40, respectively. The specimens, whose dimensions are 100mm by 127.5mm, were prepared by A method of ASTM D 698 with the Proctor mold. In experiments, the loading with the 1%/min was applied. Four different disk diameters, 13mm, 26mm, 38mm, and 52mm were used in the Improved Unconfined Penetration (IUP) tests. To compare the tensile strengths, the split tensile tests were also conducted on the same specimens used for the IUP tests. To find out the effects of moisture contents, plasticity Index of specimens on the tensile strength, six different water contents were used for making a specimen.
