The first Korean cold room facility for ice mechanics experiments was assembled in 2004. Since then, the $4m{\times}6m$ cold room facility has been used, extensively under various environmental and loading conditions. After reviewing published references on cold room testing methods and also by trial and error, the standard procedures for testing and preparing laboratory ice material were established for the measurement of basic ice properties. In this paper, laboratory experimental techniques with the cold room facility and standard procedures established for ice material properties are introduced. Test specimens include laboratory-grown fresh water ice and frozen soils. Tests are carried out for unconfined compressive strength. Preparation and dimension of the specimen are the most important issues arising in cold room tests. The details of specimen preparation, testing procedure and strength test results are also discussed.
Failure patterns of rock specimens represent valuable information about the mechanical properties and crack evolution mechanism of rock. Several kinds of research have been conducted regarding the failure mechanism of brittle material, however; the influence of brittleness on the failure mechanism of rock specimens has not been precisely considered. In the present study, experimental and numerical examinations have been made to evaluate the physical and mechanical phenomena associated with rock failure mechanisms through the uniaxial compression test. In the experimental part, Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) tests equipped with Acoustic Emission (AE) have been conducted on rock samples with three different brittleness. Then, the numerical models have been calibrated based on experimental test results for further investigation and comparing the micro-cracking process in experimental and numerical models. It can be perceived that the failure mode of specimens with high brittleness is tensile axial splitting, based on the experimental evidence of rock specimens with different brittleness. Also, the crack growth mechanism of the rock specimens with various brittleness using discrete element modeling in the numerical part suggested that the specimens with more brittleness contain more tensile fracture during the loading sequences.

This paper probabilisticly analyses the variance of the soil parameters on kinds of soil by conducting statistical analysis through the Unified Soil Classification System. Data used are the result of soil test which the Korea National Housing Corporation conducted in 176 sites of 74 cities throughout the country during the past 13 years from 1974 to 1986. In this paper, soil parameters such as natural water contents, specific gravity of soil particle, Atterberg limits, N-values, unconfined compression strength, compression index and shear strength parameter etc., is analysed. The result of the analysis is as follows. 1) The variance in physical properties of the soil is, when compared with coefficient of variation which is statistical variable, comparatively small. 2) The shear strength parameter is proved to be about 40% and compression index is about 32%. 3) The variance in specific gravity is 0.87-2.49% in granular soil and 0.91~5.03% in cohesive soil respectively. So, the degree of the variance is very small.

This study investigated the effect of artesian pressure on mechanical properties of deep cement mixing (DCM)-improved specimens. Various laboratory tests such as unconfined compression test and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were conducted on DCM specimens which curied in a water tank with different artesian pressures. The artesian pressure was determined in consideration of the laboratory scale and the hydraulic gradient in field conditions. Results of experimental tests indicated that unconfined compressive strength, secant modulus, and unit weight of specimen decreased and water content tended to increase as an artesian pressure increased. The stress-strain behavior changed brittle to ductile behaviors as an artesian pressure increased. The outflow water from the water tank reacted with the phenolphthalein solution due to the leaching phenomenon of the improved specimen. SEM analysis also confirmed that a small amount of ettringite was formed between soil particles in the specimens with artesian pressure.
Ground improvement technique of cement stabilization via Deep Soil Mixing with dry cement is gaining popularity, particularly in Japan and other parts of Southeast Asia and in Scandinavia. Cement can be mixed with deep soft clay deposits, typical of marine environments, to improve the bearing capacity and/or reduce the compressibility of the material so that an otherwise poor site can be developed. However, the strength/deformation behaviour and resulting soil structure of the clay-cement mixture is presently not well understood with respect to both dry and wet mix methods. An extensive laboratory test was carried out to determine the mechanical characteristics of kaolin-cement, with some brief examination of the effects of curing environment. Laboratory tests include triaxial tests, unconfined compression tests, isotropic consolidation testis and oedometer tests. Cement contents up to 10 percent were considered and water curing was employed. Samples were cured for 7 to 112 days while submerged in distilled water. Conventional laboratory tests were also performed. In this paper, the laboratory testing program is described and various sample preparation techniques are discussed. Preliminary triaxial compression test results and trends at varying moisture contents, cement contents, confining pressures and curing times will be presented.
Marine dredged soils taken from navigation channels or construction sites of coastal area usually have a lot of salt in pores of clayey soils. This paper investigates effect of salt on mechanical characteristics of non-salt and salt-rich stabilized dredged soil. The stabilized dredged soil (SDS) consisted of dredged soil and cement. Several pairs of SDS with non-salt and salt-rich dredged soils, noted as N-SDS and S-SDS, respectively, were prepared to compare their strengths and compressibility characteristics. The microstructures, strength and compressibility characteristics of N-SDS and S-SDS specimens at 7 and 28 days of curing time were evaluated using scanning electronic microscope (SEM), unconfined compression test, and oedometer test. It was found that salt concentration of clayey soil affected not only the formation of soil structure but also the strength development of mixture. The compression index and swelling index of S-SDS were also greater than those of N-SDS, which indicated that the compressibility of mixture increased due to salt concentration. Salinity in clayey soil had a negative effect on the strength development and compressibility characteristics of stabilized dredged soils.
Previous researches showed that confined concrete with Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) sheets significantly improves the strength and ductility of concrete compared with unconfined concrete. However, the retrofit design of concrete with FRP materials requires an accurate estimate of the performance enhancement due to the confinement mechanism. The object of this research is to predict the compressive strength and strain of concrete confined with FRP wraps. For the purpose of this research, 102 test specimens were fabricated and loaded statically under uniaxial compression. Axial load, axial and lateral strains were investigated to predict the ultimate stress and strain. Also, to achieve reliability of proposed strength and strain models for FRP-confined concrete, another series of uniaxial compression test results were used. This paper presents strength and strain models for FRP-confined concrete. The proposed models to estimate the ultimate stresses and failure strains produce satisfactory predictions as compared to current design equations. In conclusion, it is proposed that the modified stress-strain model of concrete cylinders could be effectively used for the repair and retrofit of concrete columns.

Experiments both in laboratory and field were performed to compare and analyze the characteristics of alluvial clay. The alluvial clay was sampled in test site in which large-scaled tests for the part of the site are under process to suggest the rational method for alluvial clay and the criterion for ground settlement monitoring system. The followings were observed through the experiments : 1. Natural water content, plastic limit, and liquid limit of alluvial clay composed of highly fine grains were 40~80%, 10~20%, and 30~55%, respectively. The values of these properties were relatively small at the ground surface, while the values showed maximum at G.L.- l0m and gradually decreased below the level. 2. Shear strength of alluvial clay was proportionally increased to the depth. Unconfined and triaxial compressive strengths were 0.2~0.6kgf/$cm^2$ and 0.1~0.3kgf/$cm^2$, respectively. 3. Compression index and secondary compression index showed maximum values at G.L.-l0m and gradually decreased below the level. The value of consolidation coefficient was relatively large at the ground surface, constant with decreasing the depth, and incresed when G.L. was below -20m. 4. Piezocone test appeared that alluvial clay with N value of 2~4 was uniformly distributed with 20~ 30m thickness from the ground surface, sand seam was nonuniformly distributed, and penetration pore pressure was 0.8 ~ 1 times of the hydrostatic pressure. Undrained shear strength and consolidation coefficient were 0.04 ~ 0.76kgf / $cm^2$ and $2.88{\times} 10{^-4}~1.3{\times} 10{^-2} cm^2/s$ respectively.

In period of rapid economic development, as doing river conservation work by using harmful materials environmental pollution has adversely effected humans, animals and plants frequently. For recovery of environmental pollution it needs a lot of time and cost. Therefore, in this study, in order to take an environment-friendly method which is also economical and durable both results of the laboratory model test and field test were compared and analyzed. According to the results of the laboratory model test, those methods such as concrete paving, asphalt paving, bentonite mat, stabilized soil method and mixed soil method have small amount of seepage, but on the other hand compaction soil, grassland and permeable materials have considerable amount of seepage. The results of field test show a similar tendency with laboratory test and have been satisfied to assess standard of domestic water permeability below $1.0{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$ and unconfined compressive strength is also than 1.0MPa so it has been satisfied about standard. In conclusion, as compaction rate increased, as unconfined compression strength increased and coefficient of permeability decreased.

This research have investigated the application and the injection effect of the alkaline silicasol grouting materia (which is) recently developed. To compare the engineering characteristics of the alkaline silicasol which is formed with 3D-gel and the sodium silicate, it have studied the strength and environmental effects through the laboratory test, and field application was investigated with a review of the injection effect and waterproof through the field test. As a result of the laboratory test, unconfined compression strength of alkaline silicasol was 5 times more than sodium silicate. As a result of the leaching test, a total amount of the eluviated elements was very small, it considered the environment-friendly material. As a result of the field test, considerable reduction of the coefficient of permeability at the hydraulic layer was confirmed, and it could secure that the coefficient of permeability showed a lower than standard value of $10^{-5}cm/sec$.
