Industrialization and urbanization are the two phenomena that are going relentless all over the world. The consequence of this economic success has been a massive increase in waste on one hand and increasing demand for suitable sites for construction on the other. Owing to the surplus raw materials and energy requirement needed for manufacturing synthetic fibers, applications of waste fibers for reinforcing soils evidenced to offer economic and environmental benefits. The main objective of the proposed work is to explore the possibilities of improving the strength of soil using fly ash waste as an admixture and Human Hair Fiber (HHF) as reinforcement such that they can be used for construction of embankments and land reclamation projects. The effect of fiber content on soil - fly ash mixture was observed through a series of laboratory tests such as compaction tests, CBR and unconfined compression tests. From the stress - strain curves, it was observed that the UCC strength for the optimised soil - flyash mixture reinforced with 0.75% human hair fibers is nearly 2.85 times higher than that of the untreated soil. Further, it has been noticed that there is about 7.73 times increase in CBR for the reinforced soil compared to untreated soil. This drastic increase in strength may be due to the fact that HHF offer more pull-out resistance which makes the fibers act like a bridge to prevent further cracking and thereby it improves the toughness which in turn prevent the brittle failure of soil-flyash specimen. Hence, the test results reveal that the inclusion of randomly distributed HHF in soil significantly improves the engineering properties of soil and can be effectively utilized in pavements. SEM analysis explained the change of microstructures and the formation of hydration products that offered increase in strength and it was found to be in accordance with strength tests.

This study investigated the effect of artesian pressure on mechanical properties of deep cement mixing (DCM)-improved specimens. Various laboratory tests such as unconfined compression test and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were conducted on DCM specimens which curied in a water tank with different artesian pressures. The artesian pressure was determined in consideration of the laboratory scale and the hydraulic gradient in field conditions. Results of experimental tests indicated that unconfined compressive strength, secant modulus, and unit weight of specimen decreased and water content tended to increase as an artesian pressure increased. The stress-strain behavior changed brittle to ductile behaviors as an artesian pressure increased. The outflow water from the water tank reacted with the phenolphthalein solution due to the leaching phenomenon of the improved specimen. SEM analysis also confirmed that a small amount of ettringite was formed between soil particles in the specimens with artesian pressure.
In this study, a subjective weighting factors were awarded based on some indication of the difficulty of assessing the preconsolidation stress using traditional methods (Casagrande, Onitsuka et al., Silva, Becker et al., Janbu and Karlsrud methods) such as those proposed by Casagrande and Janbu using undisturbed sample obtained from Gwangyang dredged clay with high plasticity located in the southern area of Korean peninsular. These numbers only assess the relative ease of finding preconsolidation stress and say nothing regarding the accuracy of the value. The data were compared with measurements of undrained shear strength using strength incremental ratio, checking where or not the values are in the range of 0.25 to 0.35 (typical values of Korean marine clay) and analyzing standard deviation(degree of variability). The measurements of undrained shear strength were obtained from unconfined compression tests (UCT). When determining preconsolidation stress of Korean marine clay, at first, the work method proposed by Becker et al. and the bilogarithmic method proposed by Onitsuka et al. should be used. In addition, preconsolidation pressure should be estimated using the traditional Casagrande method as a basic of comparison.
Due to higher stiffness to weight, higher corrosion resistance, higher strength to weight ratios and good durability, concrete composite structures provide many advantages as compared with conventional materials. Thus, they have wide applications in the field of concrete construction. This research focuses on the structural behavior of steel-tube CFRP confined concrete (STCCC) columns under axial concentric loading. A nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) model of STCCC columns was simulated using ABAQUS which was then, calibrated for different material and geometric models of concrete, steel tube and CFRP material using the experimental results from the literature. The comparative study of the NLFEA predictions and the experimental results indicated that the proposed constitutive NLFEA model can accurately predict the structural performance of STCCC columns. After the calibration of NLFEA model, an extensive parametric study was performed to examine the effects of different critical parameters of composite columns such as; (i) unconfined concrete strength, (ii) number of CFRP layers, (iii) thickness of steel tube and (iv) concrete core diameter, on the axial load capacity. Furthermore, a large database of axial strength of 700 confined concrete compression members was developed from the previous researches to give an analytical model that predicts the ultimate axial strength of composite columns accurately. The comparison of the predictions of the proposed analytical model was done with the predictions of 216 NLFEA models from the parametric study. A close agreement was represented by the predictions of the proposed constitutive NLFEA model and the analytical model.
In this paper, strength and leaching characteristics of water sludge-added lightweight soils(WALS) considering reinforcing materials(waste fishing net, glue treated waste fishing net and geogrid) and layer(1 or 2 layer) were investigated using unconfined compression test and leaching test. Several specimens of water sludge-added lightweight soil consisted of water sludge, cement, and bottom ash were prepared according to flowability. Reinforcing material added into these specimens were waste fishing net and geogrid. A glue treated waste fishing net was also added in order to increase interlocking between soil mixture and waste fishing net. Strength increased in the order of WALS reinforced by waste fishing net, glue treated waste fishing net, and geogrid. Strength of specimen with double layer-reinforcing material was greater than that of specimen with single layer reinforcing material. Leaching result of WALS was also satisfied with standard of ministry of environment.
L/EPS, manufactured in the shape of block and used for civil engineering, is a lightweight material with an excellent resistance to compression, and provides a superb self-sufficient stability. EPS is a suitable material capable of resolving the problem of settlement and lateral flow if it is applied as the soil on soft ground. The Korean Standards (KS) has not yet proposed any testing method for use of EPS as an engineering banking material. Only its testing and quality ordinance as a heat insulation material has been standardized. The design criteria for EPS has been established and applied through the trial construction of KHC (Korea Highway Corporation) and quality test of manufacturer, but most studies on them have been confined to factory products. This study is focused on comparing and analyzing long-term durability by conducting cyclic load test, freezing and thawing test, absorption rate test and others. EPS used in the test was chosen from construction sites and factory products, focusing on the long-term durability of EPS depending on the passage of time. Unconfined compression test results indicated that the strength of collected samples was lower than factory products. While the triaxial compression test results indicated that the shear strength increased in proportion to the increase of confining pressure, and factory products had declining shear strength as the confining pressure rose.
Conventional designs of landfill covers use geosynthetics such as geomembrane and GCL, and clay liners to lower the permeability of final covers of landfill sites. However, differential settlement and the variation of temperature or humidity in landfill sites cause the development of cracks or structural damage inside the final cover. This study examined the application of a Self Recovering Sustainable Liner (SRSL) as an alternative landfill final cover material. SRSL consists of double layers, which have chemicals, can generate precipitates filling the pores of the layers by chemical reaction. The interface material forms an impermeable layer and in case of internal cracks, the reactants of the two layers migrate towards the crack and heal it by forming another liner. In this study the applicability of SRSL material for landfill final cover was examined by performing flexible wall permeameter tests to prove that the hydraulic conductivity is lower than the regulations and unconfined compression tests to judge whether the strength satisfies the restriction for the landfill final cover. Furthermore, the environmental impacts on the permeability and strength were evaluated. The experimental results show that the SRSL has lower hydraulic conductivity and higher strength than the regulations and is little influenced by climatic changes such as wet/dry or freeze/thaw process.

This study was conducted to find out the characteristics of the expanded road embankment constructed by the lightweight air-mixed soil (slurry density $10kN/m^3$) for a short-term without any ground improvement. Compression strength, capillary rise height of the lightweight air-mixed soil and settlement behavior of soft ground were studied. Compression strengths of the specimens sampled at the site after 1 and 5 months of construction were all satisfied the required strength 500 kPa. However, it was not convinced the homogeneity construction, because the values of strength were depending on the sampled location. Also, strength difference between laboratory and site specimens were found about 19%, and thus it should be considered for mixing design. Capillary rise reached about 20 cm for 70 hours because of a numerous tiny pores existed inside the lightweight air-mixed soil. Relationship between settlement and time of the soft ground placed underneath the expanded embankment was estimated by using the measured data and back analysis technique. The current average consolidation ratio and the final settlement after 120 months later were estimated about 32% and 4.5cm, respectively. This settlement is much less value than the allowable settlement 10cm for this structure.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has permitted the use of Lime Kiln Dust (LKD) as a low-cost construction material in creating a workable platform for soil modification (not for soil stabilization) since the early 1990s on selected projects. However, the enhanced strength of soils with LKD has not been accounted for in the subgrade stability calculations in the design process. This study was initiated to evaluate how the lime kiln dust is a comparable material to hydrated lime. A series of laboratory tests were performed to assess the mechanical benefits of lime kiln dust in combination with various predominant fine grained soils encountered in the State of Indiana, such as A-4, A-6 and A-7-6. In the course of this study, several tests such as the Atterberg limits, standard Proctor, unconfined compression, CBR, volume stability, and resilient modulus were performed. As a result, mixtures of fine grained soils with 5% lime or 5% LKD substantially improve unconfined compressive strength up to 60% - 400%. CBR values for treated soils are in the range of 25 to 70 while those for untreated soils range from 3 to 18. In general, significant increase in resilient moduli of the soils treated with lime and LKD was observed. This indicates that lime kiln dust may be a viable, cost effective alternative to hydrated lime in enhancing the strength of fine grained soils.
In this paper, a laboratory investigation was carried out to change the geotechnical properties of clayey soil with quicklime and rice husk ash for surplus soil strength improvement. The organic content of soils is 8.67%, 6.45% and 3.84% respectively. The geotechnical properties of treated soil were evaluated by a series of laboratory unconfined compression test, consolidation test and etc. The test results indicated that the presence of RHA enhanced the efficiency of lime stabilization. Especially, the increase in strength is very high at the first stage, while the significant improvement occurs in a sample C with organic content of 3.84%. These results can be identified by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscope(SEM). The results of consolidation test indicate that the presence of RHA with lime reduces the properties of swelling of soil. Thus, it was verified that the addition of RHA is more effective than using only lime for soil stabilization.
