In this paper, a design of an integral augmented optimal variable structure system(IOVSS) is presented for the prescribed output control of uncertain SISO systems under persistent disturbances. This algorithm aims at removing the problems of the reaching phase by incorporating advanced optimal control theory. By means of an integral sliding surface, the reaching phase is completely removed, and the integral sliding surface can be defined from a given initial state to origin without any reaching phase. The ideal sliding dynamics of the integral sliding surface is obtained in the form of the state equation and is designed in an optimal sense by targeting the design of the integral sliding surface and equivalent control input. The corresponding control input is selected in order to generate the sliding mode on the predetermined integral sliding surface. As a result, the whole sliding output from a given initial state to origin is completely guaranteed against persistent disturbances. Moreover the prediction/predetermination of output is enabled, which helps in improving the performance over previously implemented VSS's. Through an illustrative example, the usefulness of the algorithm is shown.

This study shows the conformance-based design results of a fourth-order dynamic actuator showing a performance variation caused by variation in the components as well as aero-induced disturbances. The actuator comprises a BLDC motor, spur gear and worm gear assembly, and canard. The actuator performance was evaluated by using time-variant angle information of the canard. Based on the response surface models, critical system variables were screened using F-tests, and then, the performance was approximated as a function of the variables because it is difficult to determine the performance of a high-order dynamic system as a function of system variables through analytical approaches. In this study, the conformance of uncertain performance to the specification was defined as a probability measure. The design variables obtained by optimizing the measure can provide actuator performance conforming to the specifications considered, even though there is a variation in both the components and the aero-induced disturbances.

In this paper, we present a new sliding surface with a time-varying repeated root for fast and robust tracking of higher-order uncertain systems. The repeated root is moved to target one with stabilizing the closed-loop time-varying system in sliding mode. This initial root is obtained so that shifting distance of the surface may be minimized with respect to an initial error, and the intercept is produced so that the surface may pass the initial error. Under the allowable input, fast shifting of the surface and movement of the repeated root enable the error convergence rate to be increased. The proposed sliding mode control makes the error always remain on the surface from the beginning, and therefore, the system is more insensitive to parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. In simulation, the effectiveness of the proposed method is proved by comparison with the conventional one.

This paper represent the variable structure adaptive mode control technique which is new approach to implement the robust control of industrial robot manipulator with external disturbances and parameter uncertainties. Sliding mode control is a well-known technique for robust control of uncertain nonlinear systems. The robustness of sliding model controllers can be shown in contiuous time, but digital implementation may not preserve robustness properties because the sampling process limits the existence of a true sliding mode. the sampling process often forces the trajectory to oscillate in the neighborhood of the sliding surface. Adaptive control technique is particularly well-suited to robot manipulators where dynamic model is highly complex and may contain unknown parameters. Adaptive control algorithm is designed by using the principle of the model reference adaptive control method based upon the hyperstability theory. The proposed control scheme has a simple sturcture is computationally fast and does not require knowledge of the complex dynamic model or the parameter values of the manipulator or the payload. Simulation results show that the proposed method not only improves the performance of the system but also reduces the chattering problem of sliding mode control, Consequently, it is expected that the new adaptive sliding mode control algorithm will be suited for various practical applications of industrial robot control system.
In this paper, an intelligent sliding-mode speed controller for achieving favorable decoupling control and high precision speed tracking performance of permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives is proposed. The intelligent controller consists of a sliding-mode controller (SMC) in the speed feed-back loop in addition to an on-line trained wavelet-neural-network controller (WNNC) connected in parallel with the SMC to construct a robust wavelet-neural-network controller (RWNNC). The RWNNC combines the merits of a SMC with the robust characteristics and a WNNC, which combines artificial neural networks for their online learning ability and wavelet decomposition for its identification ability. Theoretical analyses of both SMC and WNNC speed controllers are developed. The WNN is utilized to predict the uncertain system dynamics to relax the requirement of uncertainty bound in the design of a SMC. A computer simulation is developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed intelligent sliding mode speed controller. An experimental system is established to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control system. All of the control algorithms are implemented on a TMS320C31 DSP-based control computer. The simulated and experimental results confirm that the proposed RWNNC grants robust performance and precise response regardless of load disturbances and PMSM parameter uncertainties.

This paper describes the application of the variable structure control(VSC) concept for the position control of an electro-hydraulic servomotor system. The basic philosopy of VSC is that the structure of the feedback control is altered as the state crosses discontinuity surfaces in the state space with the result that certain desirable properties are achieved. The switching of the control function yields total(or selective) invariance to system parameter variations and disturbances, and closed loop eigen value placement in time-varing and uncertain systems. The control scheme is derived, implemented and tested in the laboratory where analog controller have been used to control the representive servosystem. The control system schematics are given and simple results are shown for illustration. And the results of variable structure system for the electro-hydraulic servomotor were compared to that of the fixed structure system when load disturbance and system parameter variation exists.

This paper presents a neural network adaptive controller for autonomous diving control of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) using adaptive backstepping method. In general, the dynamics of underwater robotics vehicles (URVs) are highly nonlinear and the hydrodynamic coefficients of vehicles are difficult to be accurately determined a priori because of variations of these coefficients with different operating conditions. In this paper, the smooth unknown dynamics of a vehicle is approximated by a neural network, and the remaining unstructured uncertainties, such as disturbances and unmodeled dynamics, are assumed to be unbounded, although they still satisfy certain growth conditions characterized by 'bounding functions' composed of known functions multiplied by unknown constants. Under certain relaxed assumptions pertaining to the control gain functions, the proposed control scheme can guarantee that all the signals in the closed-loop system satisfy to be uniformly ultimately bounded (UUB). Simulation studies are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme, and some practical features of the control laws are also discussed.
This paper proposes a model based trajectory tracking control scheme for under-actuated underwater robotic vehicles. The difficulty in stabilizing a non-linear system using smooth static state feedback law means that the design of a feedback controller for an under-actuated system is somewhat challenging. A necessary condition for the asymptotic stability of an under-actuated vehicle about a single equilibrium is that its gravitational field has nonzero elements corresponding to non-actuated dynamics. To overcome this condition, we propose a continuous time-varying control law based on the direct estimation of vehicle dynamic variables such as inertia, damping and Coriolis & centripetal terms. This can work satisfactorily under commonly encountered uncertainties such as an ocean current and parameter variations. The proposed control law cancels the non-linearities in the vehicle dynamics by introducing non-linear elements in the input side. Knowledge of the bounds on uncertain terms is not required and it is conceptually simple and easy to implement. The controller parameter values are designed using the Taguchi robust design approach and the control law is verified analytically to be robust under uncertainties, including external disturbances and current. A comparison of the controller performance with that of a linear proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller and sliding mode controller are also provided.

In this paper, an advanced shift controller that supervises the shift transients with adaptive compensation is presented. Modern shift control systems for vehicle automatic transmission are designe d to provide smooth transients for passengers' comfort and better component durability. In the conventional methods, lots of testing and calibration works have been done to tune gains of the controller, but it does not assure optimum shift quality at all times owing to system variations often caused by uncertainties in shifting hydraulic systems and external disturbances. In the proposed control scheme, an adaptive compensation controller with intelligent supervisor is implemented to achieve improved shift quality over the system variations. The control input pattern which generates clutch pressure commands in hydraulic actuating systems, is updated through a learning process to adjust for each subsequent shift based on continuous monitoring of shifting performance and environmental changes. The proposed algorithm is implemented and evaluated on the experimental test setup. Results from the experimental studies for several operation modes show both improved performance and adaptability of the proposed shift controller to uncertain changes of the shifting environment in vehicle power transmission systems.
