Resilient deformation characteristics on unbound pavement materials have been adopted for design and nonlinear analysis of pavement structure under traffic loadings. However, relatively few studies have been done on the nonlinear resilient behavior of unbound pavement materials in Korea. In addition, only the limited information is available for estimating the resilient modulus values on unbound materials. In this study, a laboratory resilient-deformation test under repeated loadings is performed in order to fud a proper constitutive model that correlates the resilient modulus with stress state from field condition. Finally, a finite element analysis is conducted for evaluating the nonlinear characteristics of unbound materials. and the pavement performance respectively.
This paper will present a simple approach (or predicting layer deformation of unbound pavement materials with stress-dependent material properties. The approach is based on an uncoupled formulation in which the resilient and deformation response of unbound materials are considered separately. As a result, an uncoupled approach incorporating a resilient stiffness and Poisson's ratio model is able to simulate field measured deformation in pavement foundations. In addition, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to identify the significant factors in the stress-dependent modulus and Poison's ratio model. The predicted trends of deformation from this analysis are presented and discussed.
This paper presents the results of a study that was performed to evaluate the characteristics of deformation under repeated loadings in unbound geomaterials of pavements. Two important parameters, resilient and permanent deformation were estimated using the repeated load triaxial test. In addition, the effects of different stress state and environmental conditions with various materials were evaluated. Due to the locking mechanism and resiliency of unbound geomaterials, a consistent increase in permanent deformation on unbound geomaterials was observed and the asymptotic condition is slightly reached. In conclusion, the results show that selected models and parameters are satisfactory to predict permanent deformations after a certain number of loadings.
There are several major practical consequences of stress-dependent properties of unbound pavement foundations. Among those are the stress-dependent modulus and Poisson's ratio's that may change, the compressive stresses that are generated in materials under load, the stiffening and strengthening effect of repeated loading to progressively increase the unbound pavement materials resistance to permanent deformation. In order to study these, the algorithm for predicting deformations on conventional flexible pavements are proposed and the stress-dependent effects on layer deformation are presented in this paper by the developed stress-dependent finite element analysis program with the selected models.
Resilient characteristics on unbound pavement materials have been adopted for design and nonlinear analysis of pavement structure under traffic loadings. However, relatively few studies have been done on the nonlinear resilient behavior of unbound materials in Korea. In addition to that, only the limited information is available for estimating the resilient modulus values on subgrade soils. In this study, a laboratory resilient-deformation test under repeated loadings is performed in order to establish the nonlinear characteristics of unbound subgrade soils in test roads. Then, a constitutive model that correlates the resilient modulus with moisture and stress state from field condition is proposed respectively. The results from all procedures are presented in this paper. Finally, a comparative analysis is conducted to identify the proper models in the stress dependent modulus and seasonal moisture condition of subgrade soils in test roads respectively.

It is very important to select carefully backfill materials and build for the structural integrity of abutment in bridge. In general, backfill materials of unbound crushed stones (SB-1) are used to provide the safety of abutment structure and to reduce differential settlement around abutment that is significantly related with performance of road pavement under working conditions. In this study, to evaluate the compatibility of backfill materials at abutment and to develop the abutment design program, i) basic properties of subgrade soils in Korea, ii) evaluation of deformational characteristics of backfill materials from RC/TS tests, cyclic TX tests and Creep tests were accomplished.
Deformational characteristics of subbase materials are important parameters in the mechanistic design of pavement. The subbase materials are mostly unbound granular materials in Korea, and seven representative subbase materials were collected for testing from the pavement construction sites. To evaluate the deformational characteristics of subbase materials, RC/TS, TX and FF-RC tests were performed. The effects of various variables on modulus were studied. The variation in the modulus with number of loading cycles and loading frequency are very small and can be ignored in a practical sense. The modulus of subbase materials were significantly affected by confining pressure and strain level. The representative modulus reduction curve and constitutive models for Korean subbase materials were suggested.
This study was conducted to investigate the adsorption-desorption characteristics of herbicide paraquat on clay minerals, humic materials, and soils under the laboratory conditions. Adsorption time of paraquat on clay minerals was faster than organic materials and soils. Adsorption amount on montmorillonite, 2:1 expanding-lattice clay mineral, was largest among the adsorbents tested. The adsorption capacity of paraquat was approximately 21 % of cation exchange capacity in soils, 45.1 % in kaolinite, and 80.6% in montmorillonite. Humic materials, humic acid and fulvic acid isolated from soil II, adsorbed larger amount of paraquat than kaolinite and soils. Distribution of tightly bound type of paraquat was larger in clay mineral and soils but loosely bound type was larger in humic acid and fulvic acid. In oxidized soil, the adsorption amount of paraquat was decreased to 85.1-95.5% of original soils. Distribution of unbound and loosely bound type of paraquat was decreased in oxidized soil but tightly bound type was increased. The competition cations decreased paraquat adsorption on humic materials and soils but not affected on montmorillonite. No difference was observed as the kinds of cations. In cation-saturated adsorbents, the adsorption amount was decreased largely in humic materials and soils but decreased a little in montmorillonite. The tightly bound type of paraquat in all adsorbents was not desorbed by pH variation, sonication, and cation application but loosely bound type was desorbed. However, the desorption amount was different as a kinds of adsorbents and desorption methods.
Population increase and economic developments can lead to construction as well as demolition of infrastructures such as buildings, bridges, roads, etc resulting in used concrete as a primary waste product. Recycling of waste concrete to obtain the recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) for base and/or sub-base materials in road construction is a foremost application to be promoted to gain economical and sustainability benefits. As the mortar, bricks, glass and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) present as constituents in RCA, it exhibits inconsistent properties and performance. In this study, six different types of RCA samples were subjected classification tests such as particle size distribution, plasticity, compaction test, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and California bearing ratio (CBR) tests. Results were compared with those of the standard road materials used in Queensland, Australia. It was found that material type 'RM1-100/RM3-0' and 'RM1-80/RM3-20' samples are in the margin of the minimum required specifications of base materials used for high volume unbound granular roads while others are lower than that the minimum requirement.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of earring(nothing, small, medium, large), neckline(round, low), and hairstyle(bound, unbound) on image formation. Sets of stimulus and response scales(7 point semantic) were used as experimental materials. The stimuli were 16 pictures manipulated with the combination of earring, neckline, and hairstyle. The objects of the study were 192 female undergraduates living in Gyeongsangnam-do. The results of this study were as follows. Image factor of the stimulus was composed of 4 different components, concentration of attention, attractiveness, gracefulness, and cuteness. In the concentration of attention, earring and neckline showed independent effect. In the attractiveness, neckline showed independent effect. In the gracefulness, earring and hairstyle showed independent effect. Significant interaction effects of earring and neckline on concentration of attention, attractiveness and gracefulness were found. Interaction effects of neckline and hairstyle on cuteness were found. The study results are highly expected to be used as useful sources in developing total coordination.
