Immunologic Mechanism of Experimental and Therapeutic Ultraviolet B Responses

  • The immunological mechanism of the responses to ultraviolet (UV) B radiation in mouse models were investigated by the suppression of contact hypersensitivity (CHS) and delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH), and susceptibility to infection. However, there are some differences in immune suppression according to the different models as well as the irradiation protocols. Therefore, this review focused on the differences in the suppressive effects on CHS and DTH, and susceptibility to infection in relation to the different in vivo models. Recent advances in cytokine knockout mice experiments have the reexamination of the role of the critical cytokines in UVB-induced immune suppression, which was investigated previously by blocking antibodies. The characteristics of the suppressor cells responsible for UVB-induced tolerance were determined. The subcellular mechanism of UVB-induced immune suppression was also explained by the induction of apoptotic cells through the Fas and Fas-ligand interaction. The phagocytosis of the apoptotic cells is believed to induce the production of the immune suppressive cytokine like interleukin-10 by macrophages. Therefore, the therapeutic UVB response to a skin disease, such as psoriasis, by the depletion of infiltrating T cells could be considered in the extension line of apoptosis and immune suppression.

자외선 처리된 Epoxy/Glass Fiber의 표면 열화 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Surface Degradation Properties of Epoxy / Glass fiber Treated with Ultraviolet Rays)

  • In order to analyse the degradation process of epoxy/glass fiber for outdoor condition, FRP laminate was exposed to the wavelength of ultraviolet rays and evaluated by comparing contact angle, surface resistivity, surface potential decay, and ESCA spectrum respectively. As irradiation energy are increased, the surface properties were steeply decreased in the range of 300[nm]. But the measured values within the scope of400[nm]∼440[nm] showed a increase as compared with the untreated ones. Also, fromthe result of ESCA spectrum, it was confirmed plenty of oxygen groups on the spot showing the maximum decrease of surface properties and the existence of ether groups on the surface of coloring phase. We can conclude that the degradation phenomena on the surface of epoxy composites are dominated by the induction of ester and carboxyl groups.

Anti-wrinkling effects of "L-Skin Care" and molecular mechanisms on hairless mouse skin caused by chronic ultraviolet B irradiation.

  • Background: Naturally occurring antioxidants were used to regulate the skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation because several antioxidants have demonstrated that they can inhibit wrinkle formation through prevention of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and/or increase of collagen synthesis. We examined the effect of oral administration of the antioxidant mixture ("L-Skin Care") on UVB-induced wrinkle formation. In addition, we investigated the possible molecular mechanisms of photoprotection against UVB through inhibition of collagen-degrading MMP activity or through enhancing of pro collagen synthesis in mouse dorsal skin. Methods: Female SKH-l hairless mice were orally administrated "L-Skin Care" (test group) or vehicle (control group) for 10 weeks with UVB irradiation by three times a week. The intensity of irradiation was gradually increased from 30 to $180mJ/cm^2$. Microtopographic and histological assessments of the dorsal skins were carried out at the end of 10 weeks to evaluate wrinkle formation. Western blot analysis and EMSA were also carried out to investigate the changes in the balance of collagen synthesis and collagen degradation. Results: Our "L-Skin Care" significantly reduced UVB-induced wrinkle formation, accompanied by significant reduction of epidermal thickness, and UVB-induced hyperplasia, acanthosis and hyperkeratosis. Oral administration of "L-Skin Care" significantly prevented UVB-induced expressions of MMPs, mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases and activation of activator protein (AP)-1 transcriptional factor in addition to enhanced type I procollagen and transforming growth factor-$\beta$ (TGF-$\beta$) expression. Conclusion: Oral administration of "L-Skin Care" significantly inhibited wrinkle formation caused by chronic UVB irradiation through significant inhibition of UVB-induced MMP activity accompanied with enhancement of collagen synthesis.

자외선에너지(UV-C)를 이용한 유기인계 화합물의 분해 (Decomposition of Organophosphorous Compounds with Ultraviolet Energy(UV-C))

  • 두 종류의 유기인계 살충제인 디클로로보스와 클로로피리포스를 UV조사, UV 조사와 $TiO_2$분말 그리고 UV조사와 sea sand를 저압수은 램프를 이용하여 분해실험을 하였다. 이 화합물의 확인은 가스크로마토그래프, 총유기탄소 그리고 이온크로마토그래프를 사용하였다. 두 물질 모두, UV조사와 sea sand가 UV 조사와 UV조사와 $TiO_2$분말보다 분해가 더 잘 되었다. 반응 최종생성물은 디클로르보스에서는 $Cl^-$, 클로로피리포스에서는 $Cl^-$ $SO_4{^{2-}}$등이 생성되었다.

폴리이미드 표면에서의 프리틸트각 발생에 대한 UV조사 조건과 이미드화온도의 영향 (Effects of UV light irradiation condition and imidization temperature for the generation of pretilt angle on polyimide surfaces)

  • We have investigated the effects of ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation condition and imidization temperature for the generation of pretilt angle in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on the two kinds of the polyimide (PI) surfaces. High pretilt angle of NLC is generated with oblique p-polarized UV light irradiation of 30$^{\circ}$ on PI surface for 20 min. Also, the high pretilt angle of NLC is generated with oblique p-polarized UV light irradiation of 10-30$^{\circ}$ on PI surface at 20min. The pretilt angle of NLC decreases with increasing the imidization temperature on all rubbed PI surfaces ; the pretilt angle of NLC with oblique p-polarized UV light irradiation of 30$^{\circ}$on PI surface decreases with increasing the imidization temperature. The high pretilt angle of NLC is observed due to high photo-depolymerization reaction by low surface energy at low imidization temperature. We suggest that the pretilt angle of NLC is strongly attributed to the photo-depolymerization reaction with the UV light irradiation condition and imidization temperature.

  • In this paper, we investigated the generation of pretilt for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in a cell with linearly polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surface. The pretilt angle of the NLC increases with increasing the incident angle in the cells with S-wave polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface. It is considered that the pretilt angle of the NLC increased due to decreasing the UV light intencity. We suggest that the pretilt angle of the NLC is attributed to asymmetry triangular of the polymer surface with S-wave polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface. Also, we consider that the asymmetry triangular of the Polymer not formed with P-wave polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface. Therefore, the pretilt angle of the NLC is attributed to asymmetry triangular of the polymer surface with UV light irradiation on PI surface.

자외선(UV-C) 조사에 의한 딸기병원균의 균사생장억제 (In vitro Test of Mycelial Growth Inhibition of 5 Fungi Pathogenic to Strawberries by Ultraviolet-C (UV-C) Irradiation)

  • 딸기병해는 생육기 동안 과실의 생산량감소 및 품질저하를 가져오고 있으며, 약제방제의 어려움 등으로 인해 친환경적인 병해 방제법의 개발이 요구된다. 실내에서 자외선(UV-C, 264 nm)조사에 의한 딸기병원균의 균사생장 억제효과를 구명하기 위하여 5종의 딸기병원균을 자외선을 조사하면서 $25^{\circ}C$ 항온실에서 배양한 후 균총의 직경을 측정하였다. 5종의 딸기병원균을 PDA 상에서 배양하면서 자외선을 조사하면, 하루 1시간 조사에 의해서도 생장이 억제되었고 9-12시간을 조사한 균의 생육은 현저하게 억제되었으며 역병균은 생육이 완전하게 억제되었다. 자외선광원과 병원균의 거리에서는 40-50 cm의 거리에서 자외선을 조사한 배양기에서 병원균생장의 억제효과가 크게 나타났다. 배지에 접종한 후 바로 자외선을 처리한 병원균은 모두 2일간 배양한 후 자외선을 접종한 배양기에서보다 생육이 억제되었다. 딸기 탄저병균(C. gloeosprioides)과 시들음병균(F. oxysporum)은 V8A에서 자외선에 의한 균의 생장억제효과가 큰 것으로 나타났다.

옻과 옻에 아교를 배합한 천연접착제의 자외선에 의한 노화 특성 연구 (Study of UV Degradation of Lacquer and Natural Adhesives Using Lacquer Mixed with Animal Glue)

  • 생칠(L), 정제칠(TL), 생칠과 아교를 배합한 천연접착제(LG), 우루시올과 아교를 배합한 천연접착제(UG)의 자외선에 의한 노화 특성을 비교 분석하기 위해 도막 시편에 자외선을 조사하고 광택도, 주사전자현미경분석, 적외선분광분석, 인장전단 접착강도 측정을 수행하였다. 천연접착제 LG, UG의 광택 저하 속도는 생칠보다 다소 느렸고 손실률도 생칠보다 낮았다. 또한 생칠 도막의 표면은 자외선 노출 시간에 따라 다당류 층이 드러나 구형이 손상되면서 크랙이 발생한 것으로 관찰되었고 천연접착제 LG와 UG는 매끄러운 표면이 계속 유지됨을 관찰하였다. FT-IR 분석 결과 생칠과 정제칠 도막에서 자외선 조사 시간이 증가할수록 전체적으로 피크 세기가 감소하였고 천연접착제 LG는 변화가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 천연접착제 UG에서는 일부 피크가 사라졌고 전체적으로 세기가 감소했다. 생칠의 인장전단 접착강도는 자외선 노출 600시간 이후로 강도 값이 크게 떨어지는 것에 비해 천연접착제 LG와 UG의 접착강도는 다소 감소하거나 유지되었다. 선행연구 결과와 비교하면 옻과 아교를 이용한 천연접착제는 생칠에 비해 고온 고습에서도 큰 변화를 나타내지 않았고 자외선 조건에서도 물성을 유지하므로 생칠에 비해 내구적인 것으로 나타났다.

Ultraviolet-ozone irradiation of HPMC thin films: Structural and thermal properties

  • The aim of the work was to evaluate the effect of ultraviolet-ozone ($UV-O_3$) irradiation with different times on the structure and thermal properties of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) in the form of a thin film to be used as bioequivalent materials according to their important broad practical and medical applications. HPMC thin films were exposed to $UV-O_3$ radiation in air at a wavelength of 184.9 nm.The beneficial effects of this treatment on the crystallinity and amorphousity regions were followed by X-ray diffraction technique and FTIR spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric and differntial thermal analyses were used in order to study the thermal properties of HPMC samples following the process of photodegradation. The obtained results indicated that the rate of degradation process was increased with increasing the exposure time. Variations in shape and area of the thermal peaks were observed which may be attributed to the different degrees of crystallinity after exposing the treated HPMC samples. This meant a change in the amorphousity of the treated samples, the oxidation of its chemical linkages on its surface and its bulk, and the formation of free radical species as well as bond formation.

Optimization of Ultraviolet Irradiate Conditions for Vitamin D2 Synthesis in Shitake Mushrooms (Lentinula edodes) by Using Response Surface Methodology

  • The determination of the optimum conditions for the conversion of ergosterol to vitamin $D_2$ in shitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes) was studied using response surface methodology (RSM). The effects of the three main variables ambient temperature ($20-40^{\circ}C$), exposure time (60-180 min), and irradiation intensity ($0.6-1.8W/m^2$) were investigated. According to the RSM ridge analysis, the optimum conditions were as follows: ambient temperature of $34.2^{\circ}C$, exposure time of 175.6 min, and irradiation intensity of $1.41W/m^2$. Under these optimum conditions, the maximum vitamin $D_2$ content of $117.93{\mu}g/g$ in shitake mushrooms was obtained, which agreed fairly well with the predicted value of $122.60{\mu}g/g$.
