The Study on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Mild Steel Joined with Various Spot Welding Conditions (점용접 조건에 의한 연강의 미세조직 및 기계적특성에 관한 연구)

  • Spot welding, namely a kind of electric resisting welding has been used widely in field of automobile and aircraft industries because of easiness to apply. Specimens used in this study was a mild steel of 1.2mm thickness and the electrode was a Cu-Cr alloy of 6mm diameter. The surface sheared of specimens after testing of tensile shear was observed by SEM(scanning electron microscope) after ultrasonic cleaning for 10min., and microstructures and grain size of all specimens were measured with using of O.M.(Optical microscope). By the means of measurement and observations of tensile shear load, fatigue strength and share surface, the weldability of spot welding was evaluated. When tensile shearing testing, fracture starting point in all specimens was took place at the bond between HAZ(Heat affected zone) and nugget. With increasing in number of layers, fatigue strength was decreased. With increasing in electric current, grain size in the HAZ became more fine.

Flaw Discrimination for Welding Points in Boiler Tubes by Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (위상배열초음파탐상검사에 의한 보일러관 용접부의 결함 판별)

  • Nuclear safety law's amendment caused many problems to use radiography testing(RT). Phased array ultrasonic testing(PAUT) was adapted instead of RT for NDE of welding points in boiler tubes these days. Unfortunately, PAUT doesn't give us the discrimination characteristics about flaws distinction and flaws size clearly. In this thesis, the distinction characteristics of flaw types and the detection characteristics of flaw size using PAUT of welding points in boiler tubes were analyzed. It was concluded that PAUT can distinguish between planar flaws and rounded flaws, but it is hard to tell apart the types of flaw respectively. We paid attention to the discrimination of flaws size because PAUT tends to underestimate the flaw size of porosity and underestimate or overestimate the flaw size of porosity.

  • Nano-micro hierarchical structures that nanoprotrusions were formed on the network-type microstructures were fabricated using an ultrasonic vibration forming technology. A commercial ultrasonic welding system was used to apply ultrasonic vibration energy. To evaluate the formability of ultrasonic vibration forming, nickel nano-micro hierarchical mold was fabricated and polyethylene (PE) was used as the replication material. The optimal molding time was 3.5 sec for PE nano-micro hierarchical structures. The molding process was conducted at atmospheric pressure.

  • A new type of cascade sandwiched piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer is presented and studied. The cascade transducer is composed of two traditional longitudinally sandwiched piezoelectric transducers, which are connected together in series mechanically and in parallel electrically. Based on the analytical method, the electromechanical equivalent circuit of the cascade transducer is derived and the resonance/anti-resonance frequency equations are obtained. The impedance characteristics and the vibrational modes of the transducer are analyzed. By means of numerical method, the dependency of the resonance/anti-resonance frequency and the effective electromechanical coupling coefficient on the geometrical dimensions of the cascade transducer are studied and some interesting conclusions are obtained. Two prototypes of the cascade transducers are designed and made; the resonance/anti-resonance frequency is measured. It is shown that the analytical resonance/anti-resonance frequencies are in good agreement with the experimental results. It is expected that this kind of cascade transducer can be used in large power and high intensity ultrasonic applications, such as ultrasonic liquid processing, ultrasonic metal machining and ultrasonic welding and soldering.

  • The ultrasonic handy scanner to be developed in this research is a nondestructive inspection equipment with various facility. The ultrasonic inspection is the technique area which apply range is increasing greatly with IT. The purpose of this research is development of a ultrasonic handy scan inspection device with the utility in a work spot. The ultrasonic handy scanner to be developed with portability in this research is able to carry out the spot inspection. It can contribute to the quality improvement, cost reduction and safety design.

  • In this study, we made a comparative study of backpropagation neural network and probabilistic neural network and bayesian classifier and perceptron as shape recognition algorithm of welding flaws. For this purpose, variables are applied the same to four algorithms. Here, feature variable is composed of time domain signal itself and frequency domain signal itself. Through this process, we comfirmed advantages/disadvantages of four algorithms and identified application methods of four algorithms.

  • With the increased use of lasers in industrial welding applications, techniques for monitoring and controlling these processes become increasingly important. It is very important that we understand the dynamic behaviors of the laser induced Plume in welding, because the laser induced plume has considerable effects on welding efficiency and the quality of materials. As the plume fluctuation was associated with keyhole instability, unstable vapor plume indicated the process was unstable and would result in poor welds. An Infrared Thermal-vision Camera can be utilized compensate for incurracies encountered in real-time monitoring during laser welding. We have results that instabilities of plume are closely related with hot cracking and defect of laser welding.
