This paper develops a wireless sensor for online fatigue crack detection and failure warning based on crack-induced nonlinear ultrasonic modulation. The wireless sensor consists of packaged piezoelectric (PZT) module, an excitation/sensing module, a data acquisition/processing module, a wireless communication module, and a power supply module. The packaged PZT and the excitation/sensing module generate ultrasonic waves on a structure and capture the response. Based on nonlinear ultrasonic modulation created by a crack, the data acquisition/processing module periodically performs fatigue crack diagnosis and provides failure warning if a component failure is imminent. The outcomes are transmitted to a base through the wireless communication module where two-levels duty cycling media access control (MAC) is implemented. The uniqueness of the paper lies in that 1) the proposed wireless sensor is developed specifically for online fatigue crack detection and failure warning, 2) failure warning as well as crack diagnosis are provided based on crack-induced nonlinear ultrasonic modulation, 3) event-driven operation of the sensor, considering rare extreme events such as earthquakes, is made possible with a power minimization strategy, and 4) the applicability of the wireless sensor to steel welded members is examined through field and laboratory tests. A fatigue crack on a steel welded specimen was successfully detected when the overall width of the crack was around $30{\mu}m$, and a failure warnings were provided when about 97.6% of the remaining useful fatigue lives were reached. Four wireless sensors were deployed on Yeongjong Grand Bridge in Souht Korea. The wireless sensor consumed 282.95 J for 3 weeks, and the processed results on the sensor were transmitted up to 20 m with over 90% success rate.

Recently the water management department advised the water treatment industry to focus on deploy the chemical free and the environmentally responsible process to adopt on water treatment plants in every country. In this objective, water treatment process started using ultrasonic based phycocyanin extraction with fluorescence measurement techniques to detect the change in the yield of phycocyanin. This paper propose the design of optical filter model for fluorescence technique based immersive optical phycocyanin measurement sensor design. The proposed design uses the multi-wavelength sensor module for irradiating part, and this plays a role of removing a wavelength band other than 590 ~ 620 nm. The preliminary study on immersed phycocyanin sensor, the fluorescence value of picocyanin according to the ultrasonic intensity, treatment time and number of cells was measured using JM phycocyanin module to emulate the proposed design, and were compared performance of the proposed sensor emulation. In this design, the phycocyanin fluorescence value increased about 2.1 ~ 4.7 times as the ultrasonic treatment time increased as compared with JM phycocyanin module, and the phycocyanin fluorescence value within the analysis range was obtained by ultrasonic treatment within one minute.

A global ultrasonic sensor system for self-localization of a mobile robot is proposed in this paper. The global ultrasonic sensor system consists of three or more ultrasonic transmitters fixed at some positions in the world coordinate and receivers in the moving coordinate of a mobile robot. In this global sensor system it is easy to get state vector of the mobile robot in the world coordinate from the distance information between each ultrasonic transmitter and receiver. An extended kalman filter algorithm is used to process the noisy ultrasonic signal and to estimate the state vector. In case of using several independent ultrasonic transmitters, it is necessary to avoid the cross talk among the ultrasonic waves and to synchronize between each ultrasonic transmitter and receiver. The small sized radio frequency modules are adopted to solve the cross talk and the synchronization problem Computer simulation and experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed ultrasonic sensor system.
We have developed a Edge Position Controller (EPC) using a ultrasonic sensor and applied to a fabric machine as a web guide system. Hardware devices composed of a ultrasonic transmitter-receiver sensor module and microprocessor-based sensor signal processing system are developed to realize the proposed system. We evaluated the control characteristics of the EPC and the performance of the system was good enough to apply the actual system.

Nowadays, technologies such as RFID, sensor network makes our life comfortable more and more. In this paper we propose a wearable computing system for blind and deaf person who can be easily out of sight from our technology. We are making a wearable computing system that is consisted of embedded board to processing data, ultrasonic sensors to get distance data and motors that make vibration as a signal to see the screen for a deaf person. This system offers environmental informations by text and voice. For example, distance data from a obstacle to a person are calculated by data compounding module using sensed ultrasonic reflection time. This data is converted to text or voice by main processing module, and are serviced to a handicapped person. Furthermore we will extend this system using a voice recognition module and text to voice convertor module to help communication among the blind and deaf persons.
This paper proposed ultrasonic distance measurement module development for correct distance detection with collision escaping or obstacle of mobile robot is traveling self-regulation. Representative ultrasonic module applied in existing was Polaroid company's 6500 series and Devantech company's SRF04/SRF08 series. This ultrasonic sensors are corrupted by systematic errors due mainly to the dependency of sound speed upon surrounding conditions and random errors of uncertain origin. Therefore Ultrasonic distance detecting means of error compensation method and high definition, narrow beam angle, board area distance detecting means to apply to ultrasonic mobile robot control urgently need. In this paper use internal type temperature compensation method to improve problem of ultrasonic distance measurement method instead of that volume that have shortcoming of used correct temperature compensation methods applied big addition device. Compensate error by environment change of temperature. Humidity density etc. and is applicable to mobile robot offering various interface and real-time processing developed possible distance measurement module.
In this paper, ultrasonic range finding module for the self-contained robot, INHAE-1, is presented. This system is processed, using Z-80 microprocessor, a much of information on the surrounding condition in real time and is realted a sensor for many side data acqusition with a stepping motor. Also this system can obtain the more correct edge of the obstacle using the standard deviation of the least-square method. In this experiment, it gives more correct information to mobile robot of the blind guidance and improves the orientation of the robot path.

In this paper, we proposed ultrasonic radar module and fixed module for the 2D indoor map building and from each of the modules, we can see the possibilities, limitations and considerations. And finally show the result of building actual 2D indoor map from the modules. Recently there are lots of works for the building indoor map by spotlight on the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). And the LiDAR, ultrasonic, camera sensors are usually used for this work. Especially the LiDAR sensor have a higher resolution and wider detection range more than the ultrasonic sensor, but also there are limitation in the size of module, higher cost, much more throughput of processing data, and weaker to use in various indoor environment noises. So from these reasons, in this paper we could verify that proposed modules and schemes have a enough performance to build the 2D indoor map instead of using LiDAR and camera sensor with minimum number of ultrasonic sensors and less throughput of processing data.
Coupled structures are widely seen in civil and mechanical engineering. In coupled structures, monitoring the translational motion of its key components is of great importance. For instance, some coupled arms are equipped with a hydraulic piston to provide the stiffness along the piston axial direction. The piston moves back and forth and a distance sensing system is necessary to make sure that the piston is within its stroke limit. The measured motion data also give us insight into how the coupled structure works and provides information for the design optimization. This paper develops two distance sensing systems for coupled structures. The first system measures distance with ultrasonic sensor. It consists of an ultrasonic sensing module, an Arduino interface board and a control computer. The system is then further upgraded to a three-sensor version, which can measure three different sets of distance data at the same time. The three modules are synchronized by the Arduino interface board as well as the self-developed software. Each ultrasonic sensor transmits high frequency ultrasonic waves from its transmitting unit and evaluates the echo received back by the receiving unit. From the measured time interval between sending the signal and receiving the echo, the distance to an object is determined. The second distance sensing system consists of a wire draw encoder, a data collection board and the control computer. Wire draw encoder is an electromechanical device to monitor linear motion by converting a central shaft rotation into electronic pulses of the encoder. Encoder can measure displacement, velocity and acceleration simultaneously and send the measured data to the control computer via the data acquisition board. From experimental results, it is concluded that both the ultrasonic and the wire draw encoder systems can obtain the linear motion of structures in real-time.
