친환경 Ultra-capacitor에 의한 순시전압강하의 직렬전압보상 시스템 (Series Voltage Compensation Systems for Voltage Sag by Using an Environmentally Friendly Ultra-capacitor)

  • A series voltage compensation(SVC) system is a power-electronics controller that can protect sensitive loads from disturbance in the supply system. Especially, voltage sags are considered the dominant disturbances affecting the power quality. This paper dealt with a system of off-line type voltage sag compensation by using a bi-directional DC/DC converter of environmentally friendly ultra-capacitor. This capacitor is attached to the DC link of SVC through the high-efficiency DC/DC converter in order to compensate the DC link voltage drop during short-term power interruption as voltage sags. Therefore, in this paper, a DC/DC converter to control high-efficiency energy of ultra-capacitor and voltage sag detection algorithm of off-line type SVC systems are newly introduced. According to the results of experimental of prototype system, it is verified that the proposed system has effectiveness of voltage sag compensation using an ultra-capacitor.

  • This paper describes a two quadrant bidirectional soft switching converter for ultra capacitor interface circuits. The total efficiency of the energy storage system in terms of size and cost can be increased by a combination of batteries and ultra capacitors. The required system energy is provided by a battery, while an ultra capacitor is used at high load power pulses. The ultra capacitor voltage changes during charge and discharge modes, therefore an interface circuit is required between the ultra capacitor and the battery. This interface circuit must have good efficiency while providing bidirectional power conversion to capture energy from regenerative braking, downhill driving and the protecting ultra capacitor from immediate discharge. In this paper a fully soft switched two quadrant bidirectional soft switching converter for ultra capacitor interface circuits is introduced and the elements of the converter are reduced considerably. In this paper, zero voltage transient (ZVT) and zero current transient (ZCT) techniques are applied to increase efficiency. The proposed converter acts as a ZCT Buck to charge the ultra capacitor. On the other hand, it acts as a ZVT Boost to discharge the ultra capacitor. A laboratory prototype converter is designed and realized for hybrid vehicle applications. The experimental results presented confirm the theoretical and simulation results.

Partial Discharge Detection of High Voltage Switchgear Using a Ultra High Frequency Sensor

  • Partial discharge diagnosis techniques using ultra high frequencies do not affect load movement, because there is no interruption of power. Consequently, these techniques are popular among the prevention diagnosis methods. For the first time, this measurement technique has been applied to the GIS, and has been tested by applying an extra high voltage switchboard. This particular technique makes it easy to measure in the live state, and is not affected by the noise generated by analyzing the causes of faults ? thereby making risk analysis possible. It is reported that the analysis data and the evaluation of the risk level are improved, especially for poor location, and that the measurement of Ultra high frequency (UHF) partial discharge of the real live wire in industrial switchgear is spectacular. Partial discharge diagnosis techniques by using the Ultra High Frequency sensor have been recently highlighted, and it is verified by applying them to the GIS. This has become one of the new and various power equipment techniques. Diagnosis using a UHF sensor is easy to measure, and waveform analysis is already standardized, due to numerous past case experiments. This technique is currently active in research and development, and commercialization is becoming a reality. Another aspect of this technique is that it can determine the occurrences and types of partial discharge, by the application diagnosis for live wire of ultra high voltage switchgear. Measured data by using the UHF partial discharge techniques for ultra high voltage switchgear was obtained from 200 places in Gumi, Yeosu, Taiwan and China's semiconductor plants, and also the partial discharge signals at 15 other places were found. It was confirmed that the partial discharge signal was destroyed by improving the work of junction bolt tightening check, and the cable head reinforcement insulation at 8 places with a possibility for preventing the interruption of service. Also, it was confirmed that the UHF partial discharge measurement techniques are also a prevention diagnosis method in actual industrial sites. The measured field data and the usage of the research for risk assessment techniques of the live wire status of power equipment make a valuable database for future improvements.

초소형 전기자동차용 고밀도 LDC 설계 (High Power-Density LDC Design for Ultra-Compact Electric Vehicles)

  • Ultra-compact electric vehicles have narrow space for power conversion devices. This work presents schemes to achieve the high-power density of a low-voltage DC-DC converter (LDC): simplifying a converter structure by using sync-buck topology, applying a planar inductor using PCB winding, and applying a plate-type heat sink. The heat sink is placed between two PCBs, which increases the contact surface between the PCB and the heat-dissipating device. It enables the miniaturization of the converter to improve the conditions of heat radiation. The validity of the proposed scheme is verified through the experiment using a 500 W(12 V, 41.67 A) prototype with an input voltage range from 58 V to 84 V.

초고압 불평등 전계에서 정전링 설계변수에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Design Parameters of the Static Ring in the Ultra-high Voltage Non-uniform Electric Field)

  • 발전소에서 생산된 전기는 여러 단계의 변전과정을 거쳐 소비자에게 전달된다. 이 때 각 소비자에게 적합한 전압으로 송전하기 위해 초기 송전단계 및 산업단지 및 공장과 같은 고전압이 필요한 경우에 사용되는 초고압변압기는 권선 단부에서 고압의 불평등 전계가 형성되어 절연파괴의 위험을 내재하고 있다. 초고압변압기는 전압의 승압과 강압을 위해 권선, 철심이 가장 중요한 부품이다. 특히 권선의 경우 전압이 직접 인가되면서 전압의 크기를 변환하는데 핵심적인 역할을 한다. 이때 권선 단부는 그 형상에 의해 불평등 전계가 형성되고 특히 권선의 모서리에 높은 전계 스트레스가 발생한다. 이러한 불평등 전계에 의한 권선 단부의 전기적 응력을 분산하기 위하여 정전링을 사용하는데 이 정전링은 권선 상·하단 단부에 설치된다. 이러한 정전링을 설계하기 위해서는 다양한 변수를 고려하여야 하지만 그 중 정전링 곡률, 정전링 표면의 절연지 두께, 권선과 권선사이에 설치되는 배리어 수, 배리어 두께가 정전링에 발생되는 전계 스트레스에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 유한요소법(Finite Element Method)을 통해 확인하였고 그 결과를 통해 정전링 설계 시 고려해야 할 사항을 제안하였다.

ULTRA LOW-POWER AND HIGH dB-LINEAR CMOS EXPONENTIAL VOLTAGE-MODE CIRCUIT

  • This paper proposed an ultra low-power CMOS exponential voltage-mode circuit using the Pseudo-exponential function for realizing the exponential characteristics. The proposed circuit provides high dB-linear output voltage range at low-voltage applications. In a $0.25\;\mu m$ CMOS process, the simulations show more than 35 dB output voltage range and 26 dB with the linearity error less than $\pm0.5\;dB.$ The average current consumption is less than 80 uA. The proposed circuit can be used for the design of an extremely low-power variable gain amplifier (VGA) and automatic gain control (AGC).

Ultra-High Resolution and Large Size Organic Light Emitting Diode Panels with Highly Reliable Gate Driver Circuits

  • Large-size, organic light-emitting device (OLED) panels based on highly reliable gate driver circuits integrated using InGaZnO thin film transistors (TFTs) were developed to achieve ultra-high resolution TVs. These large-size OLED panels were driven by using a novel gate driver circuit not only for displaying images but also for sensing TFT characteristics for external compensation. Regardless of the negative threshold voltage of the TFTs, the proposed gate driver circuit in OLED panels functioned precisely, resulting from a decrease in the leakage current. The falling time of the circuit is approximately 0.9 ㎲, which is fast enough to drive 8K resolution OLED displays at 120 Hz. 120 Hz is most commonly used as the operating voltage because images consisting of 120 frames per second can be quickly shown on the display panel without any image sticking. The reliability tests showed that the lifetime of the proposed integrated gate driver is at least 100,000 h.

  • In this paper a preventative and diagnostic system for high and ultra high voltage electric power transmission apparatus is proposed to secure substation normal operation. The proposed system consists of monitoring sub-system and diagnostic sub-system, which are mainly for GIS and main transformer, and the system will be applied for newly established 765kV class substation in Korea. Some guideline for combination with substation control system are presented, and engineering solution as an improved substation automation system is also proposed.

Extended Trench Gate Superjunction Lateral Power MOSFET for Ultra-Low Specific on-Resistance and High Breakdown Voltage

  • In this paper, a lateral power metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor with ultra-low specific on-resistance is proposed to be applied to a high-voltage (up to 200 V) integrated chip. The proposed structure has two characteristics. Firstly, a high level of drift doping concentration can be kept because a tilt-implanted p-drift layer assists in the full depletion of the n-drift region. Secondly, charge imbalance is avoided by an extended trench gate, which suppresses the trench corner effect occurring in the n-drift region and helps achieve a high breakdown voltage (BV). Compared to a conventional trench gate, the simulation result shows a 37.5% decrease in $R_{on.sp}$ and a 16% improvement in BV.

  • This paper presents a compact and portable high-voltage generator based on magnetic-core Tesla transformer for driving an UWB high power electromagnetic source. In order to optimize the performance of the high-voltage generator, a novel open-loop cylindrical magnetic-core adopting the quad-division lamination structure is proposed and manufactured. The designed high-voltage generator using the proposed magnetic core has a battery-powered operation and compact size of $280mm{\times}150mm$ in length and diameter, respectively. The high-voltage generator can produce a voltage pulse waveform with peak amplitude of 450 kV, a rise time of 1.5 ns, and pulse duration of 2.5 ns at the 800 V input voltage.
