Ballast water in ship operation is essential for a safe voyage. However ballast water can contain unwanted organisms that are the cause of disturbing the ecosystem by the transfer of potential invasive species. To prevent the destruction of the environment, the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ship's Ballast Water and Sediments(BWM Convention) was adopted in 2004. BWMS (Ballast Water Management System) has been developed to prevent the transportation of organisms to another region in order to fulfill the requirements IMO (International Maritime Organization) regulations. Nowadays there are about 50 approved Ballast Water Management Systems of various types globally. The most common BWMS types are UV (Ultra Violet), Electrolysis and Ozone. Among these types there are many difficulties in determining the optimum type of BWMS which can be suitable for the user and designer's requirements. The main objective of this research is to select the best BWMS type by using AHP. To apply AHP, the most important criteria for the BWMS development are derived by users and designers. From our results, we can give a guide BWMS type to the developers of BWMS.

Recently alternating-current Plasma Display Panel(AC-PDP) is in the spotlight as a digital television and high definition television. The panel structure widely adapted in commercial AC-PDP is three electrodes surface discharge type. At present time, the luminous efficiency is around 1lm/W, it should be a key factor for the commercialization. For the high luminous efficiency, the development of panel structure is necessary. At a given panel structure, a driving method should be optimized to get a sufficient luminous efficiency. The display image of AC-PDP could be realized by the repeated light emission from the discharge. Because most of discharge power is consumed in the sustaining period, the optimization of sustaining waveform is very important for the high luminous efficiency. ADS (Address and Display period Separated) driving method is commonly used. The average driving frequency of ADS driving method is ranged by several tens kilo of [kHz], however the actual frequency of sustaining period is in range of 100[kHz] to 200[kHz]. Based on this study, when the phosphor emits the visible light, it has a decay time of few milliseconds due to the material transfer to the phosphor to emit the visible light. Consequently the luminous efficiency decreases in proportion to the driving frequency. It is found that the luminous efficiency could be significantly improved by the low frequency sustaining driving method.
Various sterilization methods were applied to the powder of ginseng for the improving hygienic quality. Ultra-violet (UV) and Infrared ray (IR) treatments could not inhibit highly growth of bacteria in ginseng powder. However, high hydrostatic pressure treatment showed high inhibition rate against bacterial growth in ginseng powder. Changes of viable cell count by the pressure showed positive relationship between growth inhibition rates and the pressures applied. When powder was treated with 2,000 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for 10 min at $25^{\circ}C$, initial viable cell count of the powder, 2.0$\times$10$^4$CFU/g, was decreased to 1.0$\times$10$^4$CFU/g. When it treated with 3,000, 4,000 and 5,000 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of pressures under the same condition, viable cell counts were 8.0$\times$10$^3$, 7.0$\times$10$^3$and 1.8$\times$ 10$^3$CFU/g, respectively. Ginseng saponins of the powders were all detected when analyzed by TLC chromatography after treatment with the Pressures. Therefore, it was considered that saponin of ginseng powder was stable under the condition of 5,000 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of pressure, even though the treatment induced coagulation of the powder.
Micro-algae Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) is an important source for bio-diesel because of the high content of neutral lipids. In this study, we intended to induce mutants of C. vulgaris by UV-B irradiation. C. vulgaris was first exposed to UV-B for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 min. As the UV-B exposure time increased, the cell viability and pigment content were decreased. Mutants of C. vulgaris were also induced through ultraviolet irradiation and two strains were selected with respect to lipid contents, where were named as 'UM10', 'UM15'. They were then cultivated in the same way as to the wild type. After 21 days of cultivation, the cell growth, dry cell weight, pigment contents, and lipid contents were measured for investigating characteristics of mutants. As a result, the cell growth and dry cell weight of both mutants increased about 1.4 and 1.5 times, respectively compared with those of wild type. In addition, chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were measured in order to investigate pigment contents in micro-algae through photosynthesis. It was shown that chlorophyll and carotenoid contents of both mutants decreased about 10% compared to those of wild type. Lipid contents in UM10 and UM15 increased about 1.2 and 1.5 times, respectively compared to that of wild type.
An environmental study was done to examine the distribution of Vibrio mimicus in aquatic environments of Kwangan and Minrak beach, Pusan, Korea. Moreover, both bacteriological characteristics and lethal effects of isolated V. mimicus were observed. Sea water samples were collected monthly from January to September, 1993, and quantitatively analyzed for V. mimicus. This organism was isolated from April(water temperature was $16.3^{\circ}C$), whereas it was not isolated when the water temperature fell below $15^{\circ}C$. V. mimicus counts were not remarkably high, however this study at least describes the distribution and occurrence of the possible highest density in aquatic environments of this region. Among the confirmed V. mimicus strains, the author chose the strongest antibiotic resistant bacterium and named it V. mimicus K-1. This strain has antibiotic resistance to colistin, erythromycin, tetracycline, and penicillin, and most isolates had a higher level of antibiotic resistance than V. mimicus ATCC 33653. The optimum growth for V. mimicus K-1 was observed at $37^{\circ}C$, pH 7.5, and $1\%$ NaCl, respectively. This organism was mostly inactivated by Ultra Violet irradiation (30W, $50^{\circ}C$) for 70 seconds and death lethality increased in proportion to treatment temperature ($D_{50}=5.7min,\;D_{60}=\;2.1min,\;and\;D_{70}=0.7min$).

FRP Hybrid Bar, composed of an embedded steel and the coated composites with epoxy and glass fiber, is an effective construction material with tension-hardening performance and lightweight. The epoxy exposed to UV(Ultra Violet Rays) and FT(Freezing and Thawing) action easily shows a surface deterioration, which can cause degradation of bonding strength between inside-steel and outside-concrete. In the present work, surface inspection for 3 different samples of normal steel, FRP Hybrid Bar before UV, and FRP Hybrid Bar after UV test was performed, then concrete samples with 3 reinforcement types were prepared for accelerated FT test. Through visual inspection on 3 typed reinforcement, no significant deterioration like chalking was evaluated. The results from FT test to 120 and 180 cycles showed FRP Hybrid Bar exposed to UV test has higher bonding strength than normal steel by 106.3% due to enlarged bond area by silica coating. The 3 cases showed a similar bond strength tendency with increasing FT cycles, however a relatively big deviations of bond strength were evaluated in FRP Hybrid Bar after UV test due to loss of silica coating.

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have attracted the attention of scientists and engineers involved in a wide area of research, microscopy, diagnostics and sensing. SPPs are waves that propagate along the surface of a conductor, usually metals. These are essentially light waves that are trapped on the surface because of their interaction with the free electrons of conductor. In this interaction, the free electrons respond collectively by oscillating in resonance with the light wave. The resonant interaction between the surface charge oscillation and the electromagnetic field of the light constitutes the SPPs and gives rise to its unique properties. In this papers, we studied theoretical and experimental extraordinary transmittance (T) and reflectance (R) of 2 dimensional metal hole array (2D-MHA) on GaAs in consideration of the diffraction orders. The 2d-MHAs was fabricated using ultra-violet photolithography, electron-beam evaporation and standard lift-off process with pitches ranging from 1.8 to $3.2{\mu}m$ and diameter of half of pitch, and was deposited 5-nm thick layer of titanium (Ti) as an adhesion layer and 50-nm thick layer of gold (Au) on the semiinsulating GaAs substrate. We employed both the commercial software (CST Microwave Studio: Computer Simulation Technology GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany) based on a finite integration technique (FIT) and a rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) to calculate transmittance and reflectance. The transmittance was measured at a normal incident, and the reflectance was measured at variable incident angle of range between $30^{\circ}{\sim}80^{\circ}$ with a Nicolet Fourier transmission infrared (FTIR) spectrometer with a KBr beam splitter and a MCT detector. For MHAs of pitch (P), the peaks ${\lambda}$ max in the normal incidence transmittance spectra can be indentified approximately from SP dispersion relation, that is frequency-dependent SP wave vector (ksp). Shown in Fig. 1 is the transmission of P=2.2 um sample at normal incidence. We attribute the observation to be a result of FTIR system may be able to collect the transmitted light with higher diffraction order than 0th order. This is confirmed by calculations: for the MHAs, diffraction efficiency in (0, 0) diffracted orders is lower than in the (${\pm}x$, ${\pm}y$) diffracted orders. To further investigate the result, we calculated the angular dependent transmission of P=2.2 um sample (Fig. 2). The incident angle varies from 30o to 70o with a 10o increment. We also found the splitting character on reflectance measurement. The splitting effect is considered a results of SPPs assisted diffraction process by oblique incidence.
After selecting five types of adhesive epoxy resin for metallic cultural assets such as $Araldite^{(R)}$ rapid type, $Devcon^{(R)}$, $Araldite^{(R)}$ SV427+HV427, $CDK^{(R)}$520, $Araldite^{(R)}$ AW106+HV953 which had already been studied, this paper approached more closely the problem of yellowing and the signal of aging with time passing by connecting the problems with the safety of metallic cultural assets. The change of physical properties according to the change of state of epoxy adhesives was investigated through the change of flexural strength and the change of surface hardness by artificially providing the possible environmental change factors such as ultra-violet ray, and acid base, and how the epoxy chemically changes in its ingredients by the environment was analyzed through FT-IR. As a result of the experiment, for the most part of adhesives brought about the physical change of flexural strength, the change of surface hardness, and the chemical change of chemical ingredients as the product of alcohol, which were respectively different according to the time of ultraviolet irradiation, and acid base change. Under most of the conditions, SV427+HV427 and $CDK^{(R)}$520 were fairly stabilized under each condition of weatherability, but it seems that they should be refrained from being applied in case that the area to restore is thin and wide because the degree of flexural strength of themselves is low. Also, it is found that the preservation environment is very important not only for artifacts but also for the preservation of resins sused for preservation treatment.
We report the surface distribution of metal (Ag, Au) nanoparticles grown on polarity-patterned ferroelectric substrates by photochemical reaction. Single crystal periodically polarity-patterned $LiNbO_3$(PPLN) was used as a ferroelectric substrate. The nanoparticles were grown by ultra-violet (UV) light exposure of the PPLN in the aqueous solutions including metas. The surface distribution of the grown nanoparticles were measured by atomic force microscopy and identification of the orientation of the polarity of the ferroelectric surface was performed by piezoelectric force microscopy. The Ag- and Au-nanoparticles grown on +z polarity regions are larger and denser than that on -z polarity regions. In particlur, the largest and denser Ag-nanoparticles were grwon on the polarity boundary regions of the PPLN while Au-nanoparticles were not specifically grown on the boundary regions. Thus, we found that the size and position of metal nanoparticles grown on ferroelectric surfaces can be controlled by UV-exposure time and polarity pattern structures. Also, we discuss the difference of the surface distribution of the metal nano-particles depending on the polarity of the ferroelectric surfaces in terms of surface band structures, reduced work fucntion, and inhomogeneous electric field distribution.
This experiment was conducted to improve light environment of oriental melon cultivation in winter season. Three polyolefin (J-1, J-2 and J-3), two polyethylene (K-1 and K-2) films and K-3 commonly used in farmhouses, with different film thickness, ultraviolet ray interception and infrared ray absorption ratio were used. Heat conservation of J-2 was highest, compare to K-3, J-3 and J-1. Early growth of J-1, J-2 and J-3 were faster than K-3, and Days required to harvest of K-3 were shortened about 10 days. Marketable yield of K-3 was 991kg per 10a, those of J-1, J-2, J-3, K-1 and K-2 were increased 21%, 37%, 24%, 13% and 4% compare to K-3, respectively. Especially, harvesting of J-1, J-2, J-3 and K-1 were focused on early (50%) and middle stage (40%). Polyolefin with higher heat conservation improved growth and harvesting in early and shortened days to harvesting in winter season.
