  • The implementation of home network systems In ubiquitous computing environments requires middleware that provides a method to control and operate home appliance devices. The Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), which is based on the IPv4 protocol and running on a PC, consists of UPnP devices that provide relevant services and control points that control the devices. However, It is inappropriate to Implement UPnP devices on a PC, since the implementation on a PC requires much space and electrical power. In this paper, a small embedded home network device equipped with UPnP middleware is implemented on an embedded GNU/Linux system running on an ARM9 platform, in order to deal with such problems.

  • When a great variety of services become available to user through the broadband convergence network in the ubiquitous home environment, an intelligent agent is required to deal with the complexity of services and perceive intension of a user. Different from the old-fashioned command-based user interface for selecting services, conversation enables flexible and rich interactions between human and agents, but diverse expressions of the user's background and context make conversation hard to implement by using either user-initiative or system-initiative methods. To deal with the ambiguity of diverse expressions between user and agents, we have to apply hierarchial bayesian networks for the mixed initiative conversation. Missing information from user's query is analyzed by hierarchial bayesian networks to inference the user's intension so that can be collected through the agent's query. We have implemented this approach in ubiquitous home environment by implementing simulation program.

  • We believe that smart spaces, offering pervasive services, will proliferate. However, at present, those islands of smart spaces should be joined seamlessly with each other. As users move about, they will have to roam from one autonomous smart space to another. When they move into the new island of smart space, they should setup their devices and service manually or not have access to the services available in their home spaces. Sometimes, there will conflicts between users when they try to occupy the same space or use a specific device at the same time. It will also be critical to elder people who suffer from Alzheimer or other cognitive impairments when they travel from their smart space to other visited spaces (e.g., grocery stores, museums). Furthermore our experience in building the Gator Tech Smart House reveals to us that home residents generally do not want to lose or be denied all the features or services they have come to expect simply because they move to a new smart space. The seamless inter-space interaction requirements and issues are raised automatically when the ubiquitous pervasive computing system tries to establish the user's service environment by allocating relevant resources after the user moves to a new location where there are no prior settings for the new environment. In this paper, we raise and present several critical inter-space interactions issues impacting middleware architecture design of ubiquitous pervasive computing. We propose requirements for resolving these issues on seamless inter-space operation. We also illustrate our approach and ideas via a service scenario moving around two smart spaces.

  • This study conducted empirical analyses to investigate the factors affecting the intention to use smart home services. Based on the previous relevant studies, the characteristics of smart home service were found to influence on the intention to use smart home service, and four variables(ubiquitous connectivity, reliability, context awareness, and security) concerning the service characteristics could be derived. And referring to the technology acceptance model(TAM), the updated TAM, IS success model, and the theory of reasoned action(TRA), three variables such as perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and subjective norm were also likely to affect the intention to use smart home service, and the user innovativeness was inferred to play a role of moderating variable. In order to examine the research model and the hypotheses which could describe the relationship of the above mentioned variables, this study surveyed 447 people who were currently using or would use the smart home services, and then tested the hypotheses for 436 valid responses. The results of hypotheses testing showed that reliability, context awareness, and security have a significant effect on perceived usefulness and on perceived ease of use. However, it was found that ubiquitous connectivity significantly affected perceived usefulness but did not affect perceived ease of use. And perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and subjective norm had significant effect on the intention to use smart home services. Also, user innovativeness as moderating variable was found to significantly influence on the magnitude of the relationship between ubiquitous connectivity and perceived usefulness and on that between reliability and perceived ease of use. This can be interpreted as the findings implying that innovative smart home-service users are likely to feel the smart home-services more useful than ordinary users when the degree of ubiquitous connectivity is higher, and are likely to perceive the use of smart home-services to be easier than ordinary ones when the degree of reliability is higher.

  • In the vision of ubiquitous computing environment, smart objects would communicate each other and provide many kinds of information about user and their surroundings in the home. This information enables smart objects to recognize context and to provide active and convenient services to the customers. However in most cases, context-aware services are available only with expert systems. In this paper, we present generalized activity recognition application in the smart home based on a naive Bayesian network(BN) and fuzzy clustering. We quantize continuous sensor data with fuzzy c-means clustering to simplify and reduce BN's conditional probability table size. And we apply mutual information to learn the BN structure efficiently. We show that this system can recognize user activities about 80% accuracy in the web based virtual smart home.

  • This paper proposes the U-healtcare middleware that is based on mininumCORBA. Ubiquitous healthcare system is generated by combining the technologies of computer system and medical system. This makes available that the person can receive medical treatment anywhere, anytime at on-line. The Healthcare devices are connected to network system as wire or wireless internet. So, the computer system can gather the vital information from the person at the real time and transfers the information to the server system that processes the medical information. When a medical doctor makes a diagnosis they can get more information about the patient by using the information within the server. Users would like to receive more services in the ubiquitous healthcare system than the traditional medical system. And in U-healthcare system, every healthcare devices and the users have to be connected to network system and the information from them has to be integrated. U-Home Healthcare middleware I proposed in this paper will do everything that I mentioned above.

  • Recent ubiquitous computing environments increasingly impact on our lives using the current technologies of sensor network and ubiquitous services. In this paper, we propose ubiquitous architectural framework for ubiquitous sleep aid service(UbiSAS) in the subset of ubiquitous computing for refreshing of human's sleep. And we examine technical feasibility. Human can recover his health through refreshing sleep from fatigue. Ubiquitous architectural framework for UbiSAS in digital home offers agreeable sleeping environment and improves recovery from fatigue. So we present new concept of ubiquitous architectural framework dissolving stress. Specially, we apply context to context-aware framework module. This context is transferred to context adaptive inference engine which has service invocation function in intelligent agent module. Ubiquitous architectural framework for UbiSAS using context adaptive rule inference engine without user intervention is technical issue. That is to say, we should take sleep comfortably during our sleeping. And sensed information during sleeping is changed to context-aware information. This presents significant information in context adaptive rule inference engine for UbiSAS. This information includes all sleeping state during sleeping in context-aware computing technique. So we propose more effective and most suitable ubiquitous architectural framework using context adaptive rule inference engine for refreshing sleep in this paper.

  • Middleware enables different networking devices and protocols to inter-operate in ubiquitous home network environments. The UPnP(Universal Plug and Play) middleware, which runs on a PC and is based on the IPv4 protocol, has attracted much interest in the field of home network research since it has versatility. The UPnP, however, cannot be easily accessed via the public Internet since the UPnP devices that provide services and the Control Points that control the devices are configured with non-routable local private or Auto IP networks. The critical question is how to access UPnP network via the public Internet. The purpose of this study is to deal with the non-routability problem in local private and Auto IP networks by improving the conventional Control Point used in UPnP middleware-based home networks. For this purpose, this paper proposes an improved Control Point for accessing and controlling the home network from remote sites via the public Internet, by adding a web server to the conventional Control Point. The improved Control Point is implemented in an embedded GNU/Linux system running on an ARM9 platform.
