A Review of Cross-Cultural Design to Improve User Engagement for Learning Management System

  • Online learning has become a widespread practice for students and teachers in acquiring and delivering knowledge. Education platforms have become prominent in the 21st century with the evolution of technology and the accessibility to online learning. As a result, various learning management systems (LMSs) have been introduced to facilitate online interaction between users. For instance, communication between students and teachers at school. However, there is a need to emphasise user engagement in LMS to enhance the online learning experience amongst students since the design of LMS affects user engagement. This study utilised a systematic literature review (SLR) that examined 74 articles published between 2014 and 2023, focusing on cross-cultural design (CCD), user-centred design (UCD), and usability in LMS design. This study aimed to review CCD and its association with UCD, user interfaces (UI), and user experience (UX) in the context of LMS. CCD has been introduced as an approach to design that embraces different cultures, languages, and social contexts, while UCD plays a significant role in defining user engagement for LMS. All elements in CCD and UCD help create a better user experience for LMS. Besides, this study reviewed the usability of selected LMS to give insights to developers in creating a positive user engagement. An insight into cultural factors that influence the usability of LMS has revealed their value for LMS design, such as the UI/UX elements. Initially, this study may guide future researchers in improving education quality by emphasising CCD and LMS usability, which can enhance user engagement.

Research on Service Enhancement Approach based on Super App Review Data using Topic Modeling (슈퍼앱 리뷰 토픽모델링을 통한 서비스 강화 방안 연구)

  • Super app is an application that provides a variety of services in a unified interface within a single platform. With the acceleration of digital transformation, super apps are becoming more prevalent. This study aims to suggest service enhancement measures by analyzing the user review data before and after the transition to a super app. To this end, user review data from a payment-based super app(Shinhan Play) were collected and studied via topic modeling. Moreover, a matrix for assessing the importance and usefulness of topics is introduced, which relies on the eigenvector centrality of the inter-topic network obtained through topic modeling and the number of review recommendations. This allowed us to identify and categorize topics with high utility and impact. Prior to the transition, the factors contributing to user satisfaction included 'payment service,' 'additional service,' and 'improvement.' Following the transition, user satisfaction was associated with 'payment service' and 'integrated UX.' Conversely, dissatisfaction factors before the transition encompassed issues related to 'signup/installation,' 'payment error/response,' 'security authentication,' and 'security error.' Following the transition, user dissatisfaction arose from concerns regarding 'update/error response' and 'UX/UI.' The research results are expected to be used as a basis for establishing strategies to strengthen service competitiveness by making super app services more user-oriented.

  • The ATVM(Automatic Ticket Vending Machine) of Seoul Metropolitan is a Kiosk which is called Ticket Vending and Reload Device at the subway station. It is implemented for integrating transportation card system which is separated from a paper subway ticket and replacing ticket selling employees. However, since the automatic ticket vending machine was accepted in 2009, there has been confusion of purchasing a ticket. Therefore, it requires improvement of usability. This study, conducts a literature search. Also, the interface of ATVM is analyzed. Finally user observation proceeded at Sinnonhyeon Station of Seoul Metro line 9. The results show that selecting a destination and section fares is confusing process for user. Based on this survey the improvements of UI are proposed to expect advanced directions of the ATVM.

Proposal of Location-aware Interface using Empirical Metapo Element (경험적 메타포 요소를 활용한 위치 인식 인터페이스 제안)

  • As mobile devices increase use, users are forced to recognize and navigate their own location and virtual space within a given small display. Unlike trains and buses, this study aims to select a space inside a subway train that is difficult to transfer location information to and suggest an interface to reduce cognitive differences to users. First, observe the actual environment and then derive the empirical factors. Second, by using Metapo which is an act of understanding or experiencing specific targets that are not familiar with familiar objects, the interface is designed according to the UX principle after converting the experience element into metapo. Finally, usability will be assessed through user experience evaluation and problem elicited and supplemented in future studies. This study expects the use of spatial interfaces to be increased and applied as a variety of services by using metaphors through experience elements to help users easily recognize their location within the mobile interface.

  • In the IT industry, processing units of IT applications are getting smaller and high efficient. Furthermore, the realization of various smart functions is highly feasible now due to advances in sensing technology. The service infrastructures on high efficient and compact mobile devices are applied to various areas. These also could be possessed by users and is built into the devices. Currently, studies on the UX(User Experience) field to attempt an analysis and prediction of user's information are continuing with reference to the UI(User Interface). However, research on the common framework of classification and storing the user-information, and standardization of form has not been attempted yet. In this study, we proposed the AUX(Associative user Experience) model and process structure to store various empirical data by users. The AUX model expressed a diversity of user's empirical data using extended E-TCPN model. And also, we expressed the data structure using XML with reference to the application of AUX model. This expressed model and separation of process structure guarantee its specialty, productivity and flexibility through the humanistic characteristics of users and the independence of technical process structure. The AUX model maps out the AUX information process architecture and expressed the process with the improved MPP algorithm, to analyze of its performance. The simulation of movements applying to MPP traffic allocation of VOD is used to analyze of its performance. The playback deviation of MPP Graphic Allocation Algorism where the AUX model was applied was improved by 10.41% more than the one where it was not applied. As a result of that, playback performance has improved due to the conversion of AUX with accessing media, content of users and dynamic traffic allocation such as MPI and CPI.

Experience Design Guideline for Smart Car Interface (스마트카의 인터페이스를 위한 경험 디자인 가이드라인)

  • Due to the development of communication technology and expansion of Intelligent Transport System (ITS), the car is changing from a simple mechanical device to second living space which has comprehensive convenience function and is evolved into the platform which is playing as an interface for this role. As the interface area to provide various information to the passenger is being expanded, the research importance about smart car based user experience is rising. This study has a research objective to propose the guidelines regarding the smart car user experience elements. In order to conduct this study, smart car user experience elements were defined as function, interaction, and surface and through the discussions of UX/UI experts, 8 representative techniques, 14 representative techniques, and 8 locations of the glass windows were specified for each element. Following, the smart car users' priorities of the experience elements, which were defined through targeting 100 drivers, were analyzed in the form of questionnaire survey. The analysis showed that the users' priorities in applying the main techniques were in the order of safety, distance, and sensibility. The priorities of the production method were in the order of voice recognition, touch, gesture, physical button, and eye tracking. Furthermore, regarding the glass window locations, users prioritized the front of the driver's seat to the back. According to the demographic analysis on gender, there were no significant differences except for two functions. Therefore this showed that the guidelines of male and female can be commonly applied. Through user requirement analysis about individual elements, this study provides the guides about the requirement in each element to be applied to commercialized product with priority.

A comparative study on user interface experience, product attitudes and intention to repurchase for each smartphone manufacturer (스마트폰 제조사별 UI(User Interface)경험과 제품태도 및 재구매의도에 관한 비교 연구)

  • This study aimed to identify empirically the differences of user interface experience factors for such manufacturers as Samsung, LG, Sky, Apple, etc., which are fiercely competing in the mobile market at home and abroad. In addition, this study aimed to verify how different the impact of such user interface experience factors on product attitudes and intention to repurchase would be for each manufacturer. As a result of the study, it was verified that there was a difference in the user experience between the manufacturers for all of the factors forming user satisfaction experience, which included information, interaction, useful experience and design experience satisfaction. Second, it was also verified that there was a difference between the manufacturers in terms of product attitudes. Lastly, it was verified that there was a difference between the manufacturers in terms of intention to repurchase. Specifically, it was found that Samsung had a higher degree of intention to repurchase than LG and Sky, whereas Apple had a higher degree hereof then Samsung. It is expected that the above results of study will provide the aforementioned manufacturers useful implications for establishing UI strategies through the contemplation of differences for each manufacturer in addition to the expansion of studies related to UI experience.

  • 시스템 기반 항공안전감독 기술 개발 분야 중 현장에서 이루어지는 항공안전감독 업무 지원을 위해 추진되어온 스마트 안전감독 지원 시스템은 Prototype V1.0 운영을 통해 검점감독 현장에서 필요한 실질적인 시스템 기능 및 요구사항 등을 수렴하였으며 Prototype V2.0에서 요구사항을 최대한 적용하여 기존 웹 환경에 익숙하게 구성되어 있던 UI/UX를 스마트 디바이스에서 맞춰 사용자 편의성을 최대화하고 현장 감독업무 효율성에 중점을 두어 개발을 진행하였다. 본 논문에서 그동안 추진되어온 스마트 안전감독 지원 시스템 Prototype V2.0 시연 및 활용 방안 등을 소개하고자 한다.

  • N-스크린 서비스는 하나의 서비스를 다양한 스크린에서 콘텐츠를 효과적으로 공유하기 위한 기술로 하나의 서비스 및 콘텐츠를 여러 개의 방식으로 제공하는 3-스크린 서비스와는 차별화된다. 가정 내의 모든 단말기기들이 네트워크로 연결되는 지금의 현실에서 다양한 기기들 사이에서 자연스럽게 연결되고 데이터를 쉽게 공유할 수 있는 연계 기술에 대한 기술 요구는 당연한 현상이다. UI/UX 관점에서 자연스러운 입/출력과 더불어 제어 프로그램의 단순화는 서비스 적용과 많은 응용 서비스 개발을 위해서 꼭 필요한 기술이다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 스크린간의 공유 서비스를 제공하기 위해서 다수의 스크린을 가지는 단말들이 하나의 프로그램이 수행하는 것과 같이 동작하기 위해서 하나의 프로그램을 분할하고 이를 실행하는 방법에 대해 연구하고 그 가능성을 제시 한다.

  • 특정 제조사의 단말 또는 운영체제에 의존성이 없는 플랫폼 독립적인 웹은 높은 이식성, 소프트웨어의 재활용, 개발 생산성, 풍부한 개발자 존재, 유지 보수 면에서 장점을 가지나, 화려한 UI/UX를 제공하는 네이티브 응용에 비해 낮은 성능으로 웹 기반의 응용 개발 및 보급이 크게 활성화되지 못했다. 한편 데스크톱은 물론 모바일 단말의 멀티코어 기반 Graphic Processing Unit(GPU), CPU 탑재 등 HW 고사양화와 웹 응용에서도 HW 가속 기능을 활용할 수 있는 표준 제공으로 성능 제약을 극복할 수 있게 되었다. 본고에서는 GPU 발전동향을 살펴보고, 고속 렌더링 및 병렬 연산처리를 요구하는 웹 응용이 GPU기반 HW 가속 기능을 활용할 수 있는 크로노스 그룹의 그래픽 가속(Web Graphics Library: WebGL) 및 컴퓨팅(Web Computing Language: WebCL) 지원 표준 규격을 정리한다. 또한, 최근 차세대 GPU Application Programming Interface(API)로 발표된 Vulkan에 대해 알아보고, 웹 고속화 기술에 적용 가능성에 대해 전망한다.
