  • The solubility of U(VI) hydrolysis products was determined by using a laser-induced breakdown detection (LIBD) technique. The experiments were carried out at uranium concentrations in range from $2{\times}10^{-4}\;M\;to\;4{\times}10^{-6}\;M$, pH values between 3.8 and 7.0, the constant ionic strength of 0.1 M $NaClO_4$ and the temperature of $25.0{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. The solubility product of U(VI) hydrolysis products was calculated from LIBD results by using the hydrolysis constants selected in NEA-TDB. The solubility product extrapolated to zero ionic strength, ${\log}K^{\circ}_{sp}=-22.85{\pm}0.23$ was calculated by using a specific ion interaction theory (SIT). The spectral features of ionic species in uranium solutions were investigated by using a conventional UV-visible absorption spectrophotometer and a fluorophotometer, respectively, $(UO_2)_2(OH)_2^{2+}\;and\;(UO_2)_3(OH)_5^+$ were dominant species at uranium concentration of $2{\times}10^{-4}\;M$.

  • The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the bioequivalence of two talniflumate tablets, SOMALGEN tablet (Kun Wha Pharm. Co., Ltd., Seoul, Korea, reference drug) and FLUTAL tablet (Kukje Pharm. Co., Ltd., Korea, test drug), according to the guidelines of Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). Twenty-four healthy male Korean volunteers received two tablets at the talniflumate dose of 740 mg in a $2{\pm}2$ crossover study. There was a one-week washout period between the doses. Plasma concentrations of niflumic acid were monitored by an HPLC-UV for over a period of 14 hr after the administration. $AUC_t$(the area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time zero to 14 hr) was calculated by the linear trapezoidal rule method. $C_{max}$(maximum plasma drug concentration) and $T_{max}$(time to reach $C_{max}$) were compiled from the plasma concentration-time data. Analysis of variance was carried out using logarithmically transformed $AUC_t$, $C_{max}$ and untransformed $T_{max}$. No significant sequence effect was found for all of the bioavailability parameters indicating that the crossover design was properly performed. The 90% confidence intervals of the $AUC_t$, ratio and the $C_{max}$ ratio for SOMALGEN/FLUTAL were $log0.8510{\sim}log1.0318$ and $log0.9264{\sim}log1.0607$, respectively. These values were within the acceptable bioequivalence intervals of $log0.80{\sim}log1.25$. Taken together, our study demonstrated the bioequivalence of SOMALGEN and FLUTAL with respect to the rate and extent of absorption.

  • This study investigated removal characteristics of organic matters in pretreatment and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane processes for seawater desalination. Also, the influence of the changes in characteristics of organic matters on the membrane fouling was assessed. The pretreatment processes included dual media filtration (DMF), pressurized membrane filtration (MF), and submerged membrane filtration (SMF). Turbidity, UV absorption at 254 nm, dissolved organic carbon, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM), and transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) in raw and processed waters were analyzed. Ions and minerals were not removed by any pretreatment process tested, but were removed over 99% through the RO membrane process. Hydrophobic organics, which can play major role in organic membrane fouling, were relatively readily removed compared with hydrophilic ones. Membrane based pretreatment such as MF and SMF exhibited better removals of organics than conventional DMF. As the levels of organics in pretreated water decreased, the silt density index (SDI) decreased. MF treated water exhibited the lowest SDI value; this is possibly due to the lowest TEP ($0.1-0.4{\mu}m$) concentrations.

  • We report facile solution processing of mesoporous hematite (${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$) thin films for high efficiency solar-driven water splitting. $Fe_2O_3$ thin films were prepared on fluorine doped tin oxide(FTO) conducting substrates by spin coating of a precursor solution followed by annealing at $550^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. in air ambient. Specifically, the precursor solution was prepared by dissolving non-toxic $FeCl_3$ as an Fe source in highly versatile dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) as a solvent. The as-deposited and annealed thin films were characterized for their morphological, structural and optical properties using field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The photoelectrochemical performance of the precursor (${\alpha}-FeOOH$) and annealed (${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$) films were characterized and it was found that the ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ film exhibited an increased photocurrent density of ${\sim}0.78mA/cm^2$ at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is about 3.4 times higher than that of the ${\alpha}-FeOOH$ films ($0.23mA/cm^2$ at 1.23 V vs. RHE). The improved performance can be attributed to the improved crystallinity and porosity of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ thin films after annealing treatment at higher temperatures. Detailed electrical characterization was further carried out to elucidate the enhanced PEC performance of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ thin films.

  • The purpose of this study was to search available resources for new natural colorants. The extraction efficiency of colorants from black cowpea seed coats and their storage stability were examined according to the various extraction and storage conditions in this study. The results obtained were as follows: the optical density (O.D.) values of the extracted colorants increased with increasing extract time and temperature. Extraction at pH 4 was seen to be the most efficient among the various pH conditions. The color of the extract solutions were seen to change with variation in pH, for example, anthocyanins display color changes from orange-red, to orange, to blue, to greenish-blue at pH 3.0, 4.0-6.0, 7.0 and 9.0-11.0, respectively. The color changes of the extract solutions over various storage periods were determined using UV/Vis spectra these color changes indicate characteristic absorption patterns and a discoloration index which indicates the rate of absorbance (532 nm/454 nm). Methionine addition influenced the storage stability of the colorant solutions and this addition led to better storage stability than non-addition. In paper chromatography of juice extracted colorant, a long stripe was seen on development. Among three colorants obtained via paper chromatography according to development rate, at least two different colorants were mixed indicated by the appearance, or not, of a shoulder at 552 nm depending on the extent of development.

  • Photosensitive properties of naphthoquinone-1,2-diazide-5-sulfonyl esters (PGND, BEND and PVAND) of polyglyceryl phthalate(PG), bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin condensate(BE) and polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) were investigated by the change of solubility before and after exposing to light. Various samples coated on glass or quartz plates were exposed to light under various conditions and steeped in aqueous alkali solution, and then the yield of residual film(W/W0) was determined. The yield of residual film, which was closely related to the sensitivity of the film, was affected by the degree of polymerization of the backbone resin, sensitizers and their concentration. In polymer homologs, the sensitivity was dependent on the degree of polymerization(the higher, the better). And also, it was most effective when 5 % of sensitizers to esters was used. The minimum exposed time was 0.6 min. for PGND-1, 1.0 min. for BEND-1, and 3.0 min. for PVAND-1. Most effective sensitizers for PGND, BEND and PVAND among those used here were benzanthrone, 5-nitroacenaphthene and picramide, respectively. The spectral sensitivities of PGND, BEND and PVAND were examined by comparing their spectrograms with UV-spectra in a solid state. Also, the sensitization and spectral sensitivity of the above polymers were studied. All the polymers containing the sensitizers showed optical sensitization. From the fact that in either case of sensitized or unsensitized sample, the ranges of absorption-maximum wave length were almost consistent with sensitivity maximum wave length, it was proved that the light absorbed by a sample served efficiently for photochemical reactions. Benzanthrone was found to be an excellent sensitizer for PGND.

  • An artificial photoreceptor composed of bacteriorhodopsin(bR)/flavin complex Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films was developed by mimicking the human visual system. bR and flavin molecules were deposited onto solid substrate by LB technique, and the deposition of two molecules was proved by UV/VIS absorption spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy(AFM). Based on AFM images and photocurrent generation from the LB films, the optimal conditions for device fabrication were determined. With a series of light illuminations, the generated photocurrent could be detected, and the response characteristics of two molecules could be clearly distinguished from each other. According to the obtained signal shapes, three distinctive regions could be found in the obtained action spectrum. Using a correlation between the photocurrent generation and the wavelength of the input light, it was possible to organize the basic rules to interpret the wavelength of the input light. It is concluded that the proposed artificial photoreceptor would e applicable to the bioelectronic device for color recognition.

  • In this study, Nafion membrane was modified to prevent methanol crossover by layer-by-layer self assembly using polyaniline (PANi) as a polycation and sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) (SPES) as a polyanion onto the Nafion surface. Since PANi and SPES possess thermal and chemical stability and rigid backbone, their layer-by-layer self-assembled films on the Nafion are expected to reduce methanol permeability and to increase mechanical stability. UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy verified a linear build-up of the multilayers of PANi and SPES. We found that the thickness per bilayer was about 10 nm by TEM measurement. Although modified Nafion membrane exhibited 15% decrease of proton conductivity, it reduceded 67% of methanol permeability compared to that of the pristine Nafion membrane, resulting in 2.5 times larger selectivity. At the performance test of the fuel cell using 5M methanol as a fuel, the modified Nafion membrane showed 2.4 times higher maximum power density at $30^{\circ}C$ and 1.4 times larger at $60^{\circ}C$ than the pristine Nafion.

  • Both lead molybdate ($PbMoO_4$) and chromium substituted lead molybdate ($PbMo_{1-x}Cr_xO_4$) were successfully synthesized using a conventional hydrothermal method and characterized by XRD, DRS, Raman, SEM and PL. We also investigated the photocatalytic activity of these materials for the decomposition of rhodamine B under UV-visible irradiation. The XRD and Raman results revealed the successful synthesis of well-crystallized $PbMoO_4$ crystals with the diameter of 51-59 nm, regardless of the addition of chromium ion. The DRS spectra of $PbMo_{1-x}Cr_xO_4$ catalysts showed new intensive absorption bands in the visible region. The $PbMoO_4$ catalysts showed the lowest photocatalytic activity and the activity increased with an increase of chromium substitution amounts under visible irradiation. PL peaks appeared at about 540-580 nm for all catalysts and excitonic PL signals were proportional to the photocatalytic activity for the decomposition of rhodamine B.
