  • To investigate the effects of paper sludge on the seasonal variations of soil humus, paper sludges were applied to the pots at the rates of 600㎏/10a which was either preadjusted C/N ratio to 30 : 1 or not adjusted. The effects were compared with those of control. 1) The contents of ether soluble materials, resins, water soluble polysaccharides, hemicellulose, cellulose, ligno-protein, humic acid and fulvic acid were higher in the sludge treated soil than in the control, furthermore, the content of ligno-protein had positive correlation with that of organic nitrogen in soil. 2) Optical density of UV and visible spectra of humic acid obtained from all the treated soil was decreased with increasing wavelength. In functional groups of humic acid, phenolic-OH/alcoholic-OH ratio was slightly higher in the sludge treated soil than in the control. The types of humic acid in all treated soil were P and Rp types. 3) The infrared spectra of humic acid extracted from the soil were characterized by main absorption bands in the regions of $3, 400cm^{-1}$(H-bonded OH), $2,900cm^{-1}$ (aliphatic C-H stretching), $1,630cm^{-1}$ (aromatic C=C and/or H-bonded C=O) and $1,050cm^{-1}$ (Si-O of silicate impurity).

  • With the purpose of pursuing the increase and decrease of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b caused by application of the simulated acid rain treatment on Pinus koraiensis seedlings and Ligustrum obtusifolium cuttings, the experimental design of randomized block arrangement with three replications was implemented in the experimental field of Yesan National Agricultural Junior College, during the growing season of 1985. Pinus koraiensis seeds stratified in cool and moist condition were sown on pots, and in case of Ligustrum obtusifolium, C1/1 cuttings were potted for experimental use in the early spring. The regime of artificial acid rain, based upon precipitation frequency and density, was simulated from the learning of climatological data averaged from 30 years records. The spray of acid water containing pH values of 4.0 and 2.0 was initiated from the 1st of May and ended on the 31st of August. As control, ground water was also treated at the same time. To analyse the chlorophyll content, those leaves looking representative and unaffected by other harmful agents were sampled on the 18th of September, and UV-visible spectrophotometer was used. With decrease in pH values of acid rain, the content of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b decreased in both species. The decrease in chlorophyll a could be confirmed through statistical significance, but not in chlorophyll b. And when we discussed the chlorophyll decrease index which was explained in detail in the paper, an attention might be given to similarly decreasing values in both chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b, according as pH levels of acid rain decreased. The ratios of chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b in both species were not affected by different pH leaves of acid rain.

  • Dioxygen binding and homogeneous catalytic oxidation of hydrazobenzene were investigated by employing tetradentate Schiff base Cobalt(II) complexes such as Co(II)(SED)$(Py)_2$, Co(II)(SOPD)$(Py)_2$ and Co(II)(SND)$(Py)_2$ in saturated oxygen methanol solvent. The major product of hydrazobenzene ($H_2$AB) oxidation by catalysts of superoxo type [Co(III)(SED)(Py)$O_2$] and [Co(III)(SOPD)(Py)$O_2$] complexes are trans-azobenzene (t-AB) and rate constants k for oxidation reaction was 7.692 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ M/sec for [Co(III)(SED)(Py)$O_2$] and 5.076 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ M/sec for [Co(III)(SOPD)(Py)$O_2$]. But cis-azobenzene (c-AB) are obtained as a major product with ${\mu}$-peroxo type [Co(III)(SED)(Py)]$_2O_2$ catalyst, and rate constant k is 1.266 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ M/sec. The rate constants of oxidation reaction has been studied spectrophotometrically and the rate law established. A mechanism involving a intermediate activated complexes of catalyst, hydrazobenzene and oxygen has been proposed. $H_2$AB + Co(II)(Schiff base)$(Py)_2$ + $O_2$ ${\rightleftharpoons}_{MeOH}^K$ Co(III)(Schiff base)(Py)$O_2$${\cdot}$$H_2$AB + Py $\longrightarrow^k$ Co(II)(Schiff base)$(Py)_2$ + t-AB + $H_2O_2$(Scchiff base : SED and SOPD). $H_2$AB + 2Co(II)(SND)$(Py)_2$ + $O_2$ ${\rightleftharpoons}_{MeOH}^K$ [Co(III)(SND)(Py)]$_2O_2$${\cdot}$H_2$AB + 2Py ${\longrightarrow}^k$ (Co(II)(SND)$(Py)_2$ + c-AB + $H_2O_2$.

  • A new $N_4O_3$ heptadentate ligand, N,N'-Bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-1,3-bis[(2-aminoethyl)amino]-2-propanol(H-BAP 4HCl)was synthesized. The hydrochloric acid salts of Br-BAP 4HCl, Cl-BAP 4HCl, $CH_3O$-BAP 4HCl and $CH_3$-BAP 4HCl containing Br-, Cl-, H-, $CH_3O-$ and $CH_{3^-}$ groups at the para-site of the phenol group of the H-BAP were synthesized. The structures of the ligands were confirmed by C. H. N. atomic analysis and $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, UV-visible and mass spectra. The elemental stepwise protonation constants(${logK_n}^H$) of the synthesized $N_4O_3$ ligands showed six steps of the proton dissociation. The orders of the overall dissociation constants($log{\beta}_p$) of the ligands were Br-BAP < Cl-BAP < H-BAP < $CH_3O$-BAP < $CH_3$-BAP. The orders agreed well with that of Hammett substituent constants($\sigma_p$). The calculated stability constants($logK_{ML}$) between the ligands and transition metal ions agreed well with the order of the overall proton dissociation constants of the ligands but they showed a reverse order in Hammestt substituent constants($\sigma_p$). The order of the stability constants between the transition metal ions with the ligands were Co(II) < Ni(II) < Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Cd(II) > Pb(II).

  • Kimchi is a traditional pickled food using Korean Chinese cabbage(Brassica campestris var. pekinensis) and also containing phytochemicals, glucosinolates. This study was carried out to investigate the changes in the total glucosinolates levels of Kimchi using Korean Chinese cabbage of harvest time(June-July, August-September, October-November, December-April, May) according to storage temperature(4, 10, $15^{\circ}C$) and storage duration(0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 21 and 28 day). For determination of glucosinolates, 50g of Baechu kimchi was used for analytical sample preparation provided with an anion exchanges column and measured by UV-visible Spectrophotometer. The highest contents of water occurred at August-September during fermentation. At 15, 10, $4^{\circ}C$, the pH in all of seasonal variation of Baechu kimchi declined, especially from 0 to 3 days at $15^{\circ}C$, from 0 to 7 days at $10^{\circ}C$ and from 0 to 14 days at $4^{\circ}C$. At that storage, the total glucosinolates levels in all of seasonal variation of Kimchi declined in storage temperature. Baechu kimchi at August-September showed the highest total glucosinolates levels. Also total glucosinolates levels decreased as storage period increased. Baechu kimchi fermented at $15^{\circ}C$ for 7days decreased rapidly and reached to the lowest at the 1day(ranged from $10.3{\pm}0.70$ to $23.4{\pm}0.37{\mu}mol/g$ dry weight). At $10^{\circ}C$ for 14days were ranged from $12.9{\pm}0.29$ to $33.7{\pm}1.81{\mu}mol/g$ dry weight before fermentation and decreased rapidly at the 3day(ranged from $9.5{\pm}0.54$ to $20.5{\pm}0.61{\mu}mol/g$ dry weight). Total glucosinolates levels of Baechu kimchi fermented at $4^{\circ}C$ for 28days decreased rapidly during 7day(ranged from $9.9{\pm}0.78$ to $21.1{\pm}0.96{\mu}mol/g$ dry weight) and then slowly decreased. Therefore the total glucosinolates levels decreased during storage time and depended on harvest time and storage conditions of Kimchi.

  • The purpose of our study was to investigate the migration level of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), antimony (Sb), arsenic (As), hexavalent chromium ($Cr^{6+}$) and mercury (Hg) from cookwares into food simulants and to evaluate the safety of each heavy metals. The test articles for heavy metals were glassware, ceramics, enamel, earthenware, polypropylene and polyethylene cookwares for Pb and Cd, enamel for Sb, earthenware for As, polyethylene and polypropylene cookwares for $Cr^{6+}$ and Hg. All the article samples of 391 intended for contact with foods were purchased in domestic markets. Pb, Cd, Sb and As were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES), $Cr^{6+}$ by UV visible spectrophotometer and Hg by mercury analyzer. The migration levels of heavy metals in all the samples were within the migration limits of Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). As a result of safety evaluation, our results showed that the estimated daily intakes (EDI, mg/kg bw/day) were $9.12{\times}10^{-6}$ and $8.83{\times}10^{-7}$ for Pb and Cd from ceramics and $1.19{\times}10^{-5}$, $1.23{\times}10^{-5}$ and $7.52{\times}10^{-6}$ for Pb, Cd and Sb from enamel. Tolerable daily intakes (TDI, mg/kg bw/day) were established respectively as 0.0036, 0.00081, 0.0021, and 0.0006 for Pb, Cd, As and Hg by JECFA (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives), as 0.0060 for Sb by WHO (World Health Organization). When comparing with TDIs, the EDIs accounted for 0.25% and 0.11% for Pb and Cd from ceramics and 0.33%, 1.52% and 0.13% for Pb, Cd and Sb from enamel.
