Chlorophyll fluorescence has been researched for assessing fruit post-harvest quality and condition. The objective of this preliminary research was to investigate the potential of fluorescence spectroscopy for measuring apple fruit quality. Ultraviolet (UV) and blue light was used as an excitation source for inducing fluorescence in apples. Fluorescence spectra were measured from 'Golden Delicious' (GD) and 'Red Delicious' (RD) apples using a visible/near-infrared spectrometer after one, three, and five minutes of continuous UV/blue light illumination. Standard destructive tests were performed to measure fruit firmness, skin and flesh color, soluble solids and acid content from the apples. Calibration models for each of the three illumination time periods were developed to predict fruit quality indexes. The results showed that fluorescence emission decreased steadily during the first three minutes of UV/blue light illumination and was stable within five minutes. The differences were minimal in the model prediction results based on fluorescence data at one, three or five minutes of illumination. Overall, better predictions were obtained for apple skin chroma and hue and flesh hue with values for the correlation coefficient of validation between 0.80 and 0.90 for both GD and RD. Relatively poor predictions were obtained for fruit firmness, soluble solids content, titrational acid, and flesh chroma. This research has demonstrated that fluorescence spectroscopy is potentially useful for assessing selected quality attributes of apple fruit and further research is needed to improve fluorescence measurements so that better predictions of fruit quality can be achieved.
We investigated the generation of high pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in the cell with slanted non-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on two kinds of the polyimide (PI) film. It was shown that the monodomain alignment in NLC is obtained in the cell with slanted non-polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface. The pretilt angle of NLC is generated about 3 degrees in the cell with slanted non-polarized UV light irradiation with 70 degrees on PI surface without side chain. But, the pretilt angle of NLC is generated about 1 degree in the cell with slanted non-polarized UV light irradiation with 80 degrees on PI surface with side chain. We consider that the pretilt angle generation in NLC is attributted to anisotropic dispersion force between the LC molecular and the PI surface.
In this paper, the combination of ultraviolet and infrared sensors based design for flame signal detection algorithms was proposed with the application of light-wavelength from burning. And, the performance result of image detection was compared by an ultraviolet sensor, an infrared sensor, and the proposed dual-mode sensors(combination of ultraviolet and infrared sensors).
In this paper, we demonstrate the capabilities of 380-nm ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) using metal organic chemical vapor deposition. The epi-structure of these LEDs consists of InGaN/AlGaN multiple quantum wells on a patterned sapphire substrate, and the devices are fabricated using a conventional LED process. The LEDs are packaged with a type of surface mount device with Al-metal. A UV LED can emit light at 383.3 nm, and its maximum output power is 118.4 mW at 350 mA.
It is well hewn that ultraviolet light(UV) penetrates into the skin depends on the wavelength and causes many biochemical reactions in the skin. The enormous amount of information reveals that UV effects sun-burn, sun-tan and photoaging etc. In addition to these, it is now recognized that UV initiates immuno-suppression, and associated with this, skin cancer. In this review, I tried to illuminate the processes of injurious effects of UV on the skin.

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light is often associated with skin damage, sometimes very serious, and in recent times has received particular attention as a health risk. As a result, the proper use of sunscreen has long been recommended to protect against skin damage. The continued increase in the use of sunscreen may be linked to increased information about the risk of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays. Natural and harmless materials that block and prevent UV light have emerged as essential household items in the field of skin beauty. New materials need to be considered and evaluated in relation to ultraviolet rays and their harmful effects. This study aims to explain the effect of UV exposure on human skin, the classification of sunscreens, the application of zeolite, nano clay, and LDH in sunscreen formulations, as well as the regulation of this service in various countries around the world.
The eighteen ultraviolet light curves of Epsilon Aurigae have been plotted using the integrated fluxes reduced from the 233 IUE low dispersion spectra taken between 1978 and 1986. The times of contacts and depth of eclipse have been determined from the light curves at the wavelength from 2550 $AA$ to 3050 $AA$. The UV light curves show two brightenings during the totality, the downward slope of the variation from the second to the third contacts, and asymmetry of the eclipse light curve. The two selected spectra note that the energy density distribution is not changed between the totality of the eclipse and out-of-eclipse.
A polarizing spectacle lens having a perfect blocking of ultraviolet light and a partial blocking of blue light and having photochromic properties has been developed. It is a functional spectacle lens which can be used as a spectacle lens in the daytime, which plays a role of sunglass in a space with strong ultraviolet rays, dramatically reducing glare caused by late-night driving or reflected light. Photochromism was recovered in 0.5 second dark reaction and 3 seconds recovery time. The polarization function was about 95%. Ultraviolet rays were completely blocked and blue light was reduced by about 30%. A lens that combines photochromic and UV blocking and polarization functions is the first attempt at investigating the domestic market.

We have investigated that the monodomain alignment of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) is obtained with polarized ultraviolet(PUV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surface. The LC alignment capability increases with increasing the UV light irradiation time. The polarized UV light irradiation on oblique angle of 60。 irradiated on PI surface rotated by 90。 at 10 min. after being normally irradiated on PI surface at 30 min., the generated pretilt angle of NLC is about 2.5。. The pretilt angle of NLC is attributed to the interaction between the LC molecules and the asymmetric triangular structure of polymer surface due to photo-depolymerization of polymer with the oblique UV light on PI surface. The voltage -transmittance and response time characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-LCD with UV light irradiation time 60 min. were almost same in comparison with the rubbing-treated TN-LCD.

Ultraviolet rays, which have wavelengths smaller than 400 nm, are very harmful to the eyes. Recently, high-energy visible light was also revealed to be harmful to retinal cells. Therefore, polymer eyeglass lenses that can block UV and high-energy visible light are needed for eye health. In this study, high-refractive-index polymer eyeglass lens, n=1.67, were manufactured using the injection-mold method with the m-xylene diisocyanate monomer, 2,3-bis((2-mercaptoethyl)thio)-1-propanethiol monomer, benzotriazole UV absorber, release of alkyl phosphoric ester, dye mixture of CI solvent violet 13, and catalyst of dibutyltin dichloride mixture. A multi-layer anti-reflection coating was applied to manufactured polymer eyeglass lenses for both sides using an E-beam evaporation system. The optical properties of the manufactured lenses with the UV and high-energy visible light-blocking function were analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometry. As a result, the polymer eyeglass lens with a UV absorber of 0.5 wt. % blocked 99% of UV and high-energy visible light shorter than 411 nm. The average transmittance of the polymer eyeglass lens with a UV absorber of 0.5wt.% was 97.9% in the range of 460 ~ 660 nm for photopic eye sensitivity higher than 10%. Therefore, clear image acquisition in photopic vision is possible.
