  • In this paper we report test results of the dynamic characteristics of the linear induction motor(LIM) used for propulsion of the UTM-01. To test a vehicle scale LIM, we manufactured a bogie type sled propelled by LIM. In this report, the LIM end effects for both cases when the vehicle is at rest and when the vehicle is running were measured and compared with the calculations. The LIM thrust and the vertical forces were measured by the 3-component load cell and the results were compared with the calculations from measured vertical load and vehicle velocity.

  • Maglev vehicles, which are levitated and propelled by electromagnets, often run on elevated guideways comprised of steel, aluminum and concrete. Therefore, an analysis .of the dynamic interaction between the Maglev vehicle and the guideway is needed in the design of the critical speed, ride, controller design and weight reduction of the guideway. This study proposes a dynamic interaction simulation technique using a flexible beam model based on multi-body dynamics. The vehicle and the elevated guideway are represented as a multi-body dynamics model and a two-dimensional flexible beam, respectively. The proposed model was applied to an urban transit Maglev vehicle, UTM01, which is undergoing test drive. As a result of the proposed method, we concluded that it is possible to analyze the dynamic interaction between the Maglev vehicle and the guideway.

Therefore, an analysis of the dynamic interaction between the Maglev vehicle and the guideway is needed in the design of the critical speed, ride, controller design and weight reduction of the guideway. This study introduces a dynamic interaction simulation technique that applies FEM. The proposed method uses FEM to model the elevated guideway and the Maglev vehicle, which is different from conventional studies. Because the proposed method uses FEM, it is useful to calculate the deformation of the elevated guideway, the dynamic stress, and the motion of the vehicle. By applying the proposed method to an urban transit Maglev vehicle, UTM01, the dynamic response is simulated according to velocity increase and can be reviewed again. From the result of the study, we concluded that FEM simulation of the dynamic interaction between the maglev vehicle and the guideway is possible.

  • The status of the maglev development in Korea is reported along with related commercial application prospects. The 1st test vehicle, Urban Transit Maglev-01, is in the running tests, and is now entered a new phase in which a new vehicle be built within 3 years. Eventhough Korean maglev teams made remarkable progress for 10 years since 1990, major portion of the works to prove safety and reliability remains for the future. Many LRT routes are being planned by the Korean government and UTM will find its commercial application if we can prove many merits of the maglev system plus its reliability. But the commercial application efforts did not produce any outcome at the time because the customer wasn't totally satisfied with the new system and also, they decided it wasn't urgently needed.

  • In this study, circular concrete column specimens confined by carbon sheet tube with different winding angles and different number of carbon sheet plies(3T, 5T and 7T) were tested to propose design equations and a strength reduction factor. Specimens were designed by 300 mm diameter and 600 mm height with $90^{\circ}{\pm}0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}{\pm}30^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}{\pm}45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}{\pm}60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}{\pm}75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}{\pm}90^{\circ}$ carbon fiber angles. A 10,000 kN UTM was used for compressive strength test of specimens by displacement control method with 0.01 mm/sec velocity. Estimation equations of compressive strength and ultimate strain of circular concrete column specimens confined by carbon sheet tube using a regression analysis and a strength reduction factor to apply ultimate strength design method of concrete were proposed. The strength reduction factor(${\phi}$) of circular concrete columns confined by carbon sheet tube was estimated as 0.64 by the Monte Carlo Analysis Method. Manufacture and construction process have to be perfectly managed by construction managers because the structural capacities of carbon tubes were depends on construction abilities of manufacturing operators.

  • This research was performed to stabilize heavy metals in mine tailing using fly ash and clay. Fly ash-clay-mine tailing system were investigated using XRD (X-ray diffractometer), XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectrometer), TG-DTA, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), Dilatometer and UTM with various mine tailing contents (~15 wt%). The fly ash used in this research was mainly composed of $SiO_2$ (33.01 wt%), $Al_2O_3$ (28.54 wt%), $K_2O$ (3.32 wt%), $Fe_2O_3$ (1.47 wt%), CaO(9.97 wt%). $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ composition of the clay was over 61 wt%. And the mine tailing have high composition of $SiO_2$ (26.91 wt%), CaO (24.25 wt%), $Fe_2O_3$ (22.97 wt%). Therefore, it was estimated that fly ash-clay-mine tailing have enough sintering characteristics. The shrinkage of specimens started at around $850^{\circ}C$ and changed little up to $1100^{\circ}C$, but increased markedly at above $1100^{\circ}C$. The shrinkage rate is strongly related to the decarbonization amount of coal fly ash. As the result of SEM, structure of the specimens with mine tailing addition showed more close than the one without mine tailing. Compressive strength of the specimens with mine tailing was highly increased to approximately 200~420 kgf/$cm^2$, it satisfied the first grade criterion for clay brick by KS L 4201. The specification of leaching characteristics of the sintered specimens were within the Korean regulation standard.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the structural capacity of steel pipe pile specimens reinforced with hollow steel plate shear connectors by pull-out test. Compressive strength testing of concrete was conducted and yield forces, tensile strengths and elongation ratios of re-bars and hollow steel plate were investigated. A 2,000kN capacity UTM was used for the pull-out test with 0.01mm/sec velocity by displacement control method. Strain gauges were installed at the center of re-bars and hollow steel plates and LVDTs were also installed to measure the relative displacement between the loading plate and in-filled concrete pile specimens. The yield forces of the steel pipe pile specimens reinforced with hollow steel plate shear connectors were increased 1.44-fold and 1.53-fold compared to that of a control specimen, respectively. Limited state forces of steel pipe pile specimens reinforced with hollow steel plate shear connectors were increased 1.23-fold and 1.29-fold compared to that of a control specimen, respectively. Yield state displacement and limited state displacement of steel pipe pile specimens reinforced with hollow steel plate shear connector were decreased 0.61-fold and 0.42-fold compared to that of a control specimen, respectively.

  • This paper describes the electrical design, characteristic and test results of both VVVF Inverter system and a auxiliary power supply system for UTM-01. As the propulsion system for SLIMs, GTO type VVVF inverter is used. IGBT 3 level inverter is adopt in Auxiliary Power Supply system. The control of two systems is fully digitalized by DSP TMS320C31. So a performance of two systems is more improved.
