In this paper, the applicability of a 1900mm-deep concrete-filled U-shaped composite beam to composite ordinary moment frames (C-OMFs) was investigated based on existing test results from smaller-sized specimens and supplemental numerical studies since full-scale seismic testing of such a huge sized beam is practically impossible. The key issue was the web local buckling of concrete-filled U section under negative bending. Based on 13 existing test results compiled, the relationship between web slenderness and story drift capacity was obtained. From this relationship, a 1900mm-deep mega beam, fabricated with 25mm-thick plate was expected to experience the web local buckling at 2% story drift and eventually reach a story drift over 3%, thus much exceeding the requirements of C-OMFs. The limiting width to thickness ratio according to the 2010 AISC Specification was shown to be conservative for U section webs of this study. The test-validated supplemental nonlinear finite element analysis was also conducted to further investigate the effects of the horizontal stiffeners (used to tie two webs of a U section) on web local buckling and flexural strength. First, it is shown that the nominal plastic moment under negative bending can be developed without using the horizontal stiffeners, although the presence of the stiffeners can delay the occurrence of web local buckling and restrain its propagation. Considering all these, it is concluded that the 1900mm-deep concrete-filled U-shaped composite beam investigated can be conservatively applied to C-OMFs. Finally, some useful recommendations for the arrangement and design of the horizontal stiffeners are also recommended based on the numerical results.

The phased array transducer has two distinct advantages. One is rapid scanning comparing with the conventional mechanical or manual scanning system. Therefore, output image is represented in real-time. The other is the dynamic focusing and the dynamic steering of ultrasonic beam. Only the delay times that are controlled electrically are used to focus and to steer beam without any lenses or wedges. In this study, the profile of the ultrasonic beam for the phased array transducer has been simulated in the Huygens principle with varying the inter-element spacing of the linear phased array transducer. From the result of this study, it was found that the ultrasonic beam spread wider as the inter-element spacing was decreased. However, the focusing effect was improved, even when the number of the element was not big. In addition, there was grating lobes that are constructed when the inter-element spacing is more than half wavelength. However, this grating lobe has lower amplitude than the main lobe.
The purpose of this study is to propose the prototypes of bolted end plate moment connection between CFT column and H-beam sections. Nine different types of bolt are designed in this study. The shapes of those bolt are straight. bent, hooked or stud-type. The end plate moment connection between CFT column and H-beam sections which are jointed by those bolts are studied experimentally to compare their performances. The simple beam bending tests are carried out to investigate the structural behavior of beam-to-column connections. The experimental results show that some of the bolted end plate connection types have quite good performance in the structural behavior but still have a lot of week points to be solved for the efficiency of construction.
This paper handles the repairing of deficient square Concrete-Filled Steel-Tube (CFST) beams subject to bending through an experimental and numerical program. Eight square-CFST beams were tested. A 5-mm artificial notch was induced at mid-span of seven beams, four of them were repaired by using CFRP sheets and two were repaired by using GFRP sheets. The beam deflection, strain and ultimate moments were recorded. It was found that providing different cut-off points for the different layers of FRP sheets prohibited failure at termination points due to stress concentrations. Using different lengths of FRP sheets around the notch retarded crack propagation and prevented FRP rupture at the crack position. Finite element analysis was then conducted and the proposed FE model was verified against the recorded experimental data. The influence of various parameters as FRP sheet length, tensile modulus and the number of layers were studied. The moment capacity of damaged square-CFST beams was improved up to 77.6% when repaired by using four layers of CFRP, however, this caused a dramatic decrease in beam deflection. U-wrapping of notched-CFST beam with 0.75 of its length provided a comparable behaviour as wrapping the full length of the beam.

An integrated structure and controller design approach for rotating cantilever beam is presented. An optimization method is developed for improving positioning performance considering the elastic deformations during high speed rotation and adopting the beam shape and the control gains as design variables. For this end, a dynamic model is setup by the finite element method according to the shape of the beam. The mass and stiffness of the beam are distributed in such a way that the closed-loop poles of the control system should be located leftmost in the complex s-plane. For optimization method, the simulated annealing method is employed which has higher probability to find the global minimum than the gradient-based down-hill methods. Sequential design and simultaneous design methods are proposed to obtain the optimal shape and controller. Simulations are performed with new designs by the two methods to verify the effectiveness of the approach and the results show that the settling time is improved for point-to-point position controls.

This research experimentally evaluated the local stress distribution along the cross-section of composite beams under both positive and negative moments. The experiment utilized a large-scale, two-story, two-by-three bay steel gravity frame with a concrete on metal deck floor system. The composite shear connections, which are nominally assumed to be pinned under gravity loading, can develop non-negligible moment-resisting capacity when subjected to lateral loads. This paper discusses the local stress distribution, orshear lag effects, observed near the beam-to-column connections when subjected to combined gravity and lateral loading. Strain gauges were used for measurements along the beam depth at varying distances from the connection. The experimental data showed amplified shear lag effects near the unconnected region of the beam web and bottom flange under the applied loading conditions. These results indicate that strain does not vary linearly across the beam cross-section adjacent to the connection components. This insight has implications for the use of experimental strain gauge data in estimating beam demands near the connections. These findings can be beneficial in informing instrumentation plans for future experimental studies on composite beams.
Post-tensioned Precast concrete System(PPS) consists of U-shaped precast wide beams and concrete column. The continuity of beam-column joint is provided with floor concrete cast on the PC shell beam and post-tensioning. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the response of PPS interior beam-column joint subjected to cyclic lateral loading. To this end, an experimental investigation was performed with three half-scale specimens of interior connection. The design parameters are the amount of beam reinforcement placed inside the joint core. The test results showed that cracks were distributed well without my significant degradation of strength and ductility. Also, it was found that the prestressing may affect to alter the torsional crack angle. And the specimens sufficiently resist up to limiting drift ratio of 0.035 in accordance with the provisional by ACl of acceptance criteria for concrete special moment frames.

The facility for RAON superconducting heavy-ion accelerator at a beam power of up to 400 kW will be produced rare isotopes with two electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources. Highly charged ions generated by the ECR ion source will be injected to a superconducting LINAC to accelerate them up to 200 MeV/u. During the acceleration of the heavy ions, a good vacuum system is required to avoid beam loss due to interaction with residual gases. Therefore ultra-high vacuum (UHV) is required to (i) limit beam losses, (ii) keep the radiation induced within safe levels, and (iii) prevent contamination of superconducting cavities by residual gas. In this work, a RAON vacuum design for all the accelerator system will be presented along with Monte Carlo simulation of vacuum levels in order to validate the vacuum hardware configuration, which is needed to meet the baseline requirements.

The thermal performance of glass evacuated tube solar collectors are numerically and experimentally investigated. Four different shapes of solar collectors are considered and the performances of these solar collectors are compared. Dealing with a single collector tube, the effects of not only the shapes of the absorber tube but also the incidence angle of solar irradiation (beam radiation) on thermal performance of the collector are studied. However the solar irradiation consists of the beam radiation as well as the diffuse radiation. Also, the interference of solar irradiation and heat transfer interaction between the tubes exist in an actual solar collector. These effects are considered in this study experimentally and numerically the accuracy of the numerical model is verified by the experimental results. The result shows that the thermal performance of the absorber used a plate fin and U-tube is the best.

The flexural strengthening effect of the RC beam strengthened with CFS under pre-loading condition was studied here. The beams were additionally strengthened at the each end with U type wrapping using the same CFS. Main variables considered were number of CFS plies(1,2) and pre-loading values(30,50,$70\%$ of the yield load of the control beam). The flexural strengthening effect was investigated through comparing the yield load, ultimate load, and ductility index of the specimens.
