  • In this paper, a rheo-optical methodology based on small angle light scattering and polarimetry is applied to investigate in-situ and on a time resolved basis the flow-induced structures in aqueous biopolymeric blends. Water-dextran-gelatin is chosen as an example. It is verified to what extent the laws and scaling relations, originally developed for synthetic polymer blends, are valid for the morphology development in this aqueous biopolymeric mixture. It was observed that under low shear rate conditions, the biopolymeric emulsion can be regarded as a conventional emulsion. However, at high shear rates flow induced homogenization occurs.

  • Cell-cell adhesion managed by various adhesion molecules plays an important role in regulating functional activation of cells. This event mediates attachment of inflammatory cells to endothelial cells, interaction of antigen-presenting cells with T cells and metastatic adherence of cancer cells to epithelial tissue cells. Therefore, this cellular response is considered as one of therapeutic target to treat various cancers and inflammatory diseases. To develop proper model for evaluation of functional activation of adhesion molecules, the ability of U937 and Jurkat T cells responsive to various adhesion inducers such as phorbal-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA), staurosporin and monoclonal antibodies to CD29, CD43 and CD98 was investigated using quantitative cell-cell adhesion assay. U937 cells made more cell-cell clusters by the treatment of antibodies to CD29 and CD43 than Jurkat T cells, while Jurkat T cells exhibited increased cell-cell adhesion ability in CD98 antibody treatment. In agreement, the surface levels of CD29 and CD98 were highly observed in U937 and Jurkat T cells, respectively. Therefore, our data suggest that Jurkat T and U937 cells can be used for model system to evaluate functional activation of adhesion molecules such as CD29 and CD98.

  • Traditional market which is characterized by the folksy retailing market has lost its competitiveness rapidly due to the emergence of the Internet and the change of customer's purchasing behavior. The recession of the traditional market contracts the regional economy. We suggest a u-Market, a traditional market with ubiquitous computing capability, to revitalize traditional market. The suggested u-Market system applies ubiquitous computing technologies characterized by communications between customers and objects without limitations of time and location. The proposed u-Market system offers location information and specific contents of traditional market to customers. Furthermore, u-Market system recommends the store and product list that customers are likely to visit and purchase based on their contexts, so they can save their time and effort to search the products or contents.

  • In this study, new moment-resisting precast concrete beam-column joint is proposed for moderate seismic regions. It has the connection reinforcing bars, penetrated the joint and lap-spliced with the bottom bars of precast U-shaped PC beam. To evaluate the performance for noncontact lapped splice, experimental and analytical works were conducted. Major variables for tests are the length of lap, the diameter of connection reinforcing bars, and the distance between lapped bars. Analytic research was performed nonlinear finite element method. Analytic research focused on crack pattern, load-deflection curve, comparison of internal force, evaluation of ductility strains of reinforcement bar. Results of experimental and analytical works show that the these variables has much influence on flexural strength and ductility, and joint behavior.

  • We present the galaxy luminosity function (LF) of the Abell 119 cluster. Deep images in u, g, r bands were taken using MOSAIC 2 CCD on a Blanco 4-m telescope at CTIO. Based on scaling relations at faint magnitudes and spectroscopy at bright magnitudes, accurate membership of galaxies is determined. The LF is fitted by a single Schechter function and a two components (Gauss + Schechter) function. Blue galaxies are well fitted by a single Schechter function with steep slope ${\alpha}$ ~ -1.55). Red galaxies in the inner, high density region are fitted by single Schechter function with shallow slope (${\alpha}$ ~ -1.30), while red galaxies in the outer, low density region are well fitted by a two components function. The different slope of LFs between the inner and outer seems to stem from the luminosity segregation of A119 indicating larger number ratio of luminous to faint ratio towards the cluster center. The different shape of LFs seems to be resulted from the different composition of luminous and faint galaxies among main-cluster, sub-cluster, and infall region.

  • Purpose: To investigate the association between urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) and leukocyte differential count in children with urinary tract infections (UTIs). Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed in children undergoing uNGAL measurements between June 2018 and September 2019. Patients with suspected or diagnosed UTIs were included. The relationship between uNGAL and blood leukocyte differential count was investigated in children. Results: A total of 197 children were included in this study, 119 of whom (60%) had UTIs. The non-UTI patients (n=78) were diagnosed with pneumonia, acute gastroenteritis, viral upper respiratory infection, and others. After adjusting for age, gender, and fever duration, the leukocyte count, monocyte count, and uNGAL levels were higher in the UTI group than in the non-UTI group (P<0.05). uNGAL showed positive correlations with neutrophil counts, monocyte counts, the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and the monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio in the UTI group (P<0.05). uNGAL levels were only associated with the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in the non-UTI group (P<0.05). In a multivariable logistic regression analysis, only uNGAL was associated with the presence of UTI (P<0.05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves for uNGAL and monocyte counts to identify UTI were 0.89 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.824-0.939; P=0.025) and 0.7 (95% CI: 0.627-0.774; P=0.038), respectively. Conclusions: In children with UTIs, uNGAL levels may be associated with blood leukocyte differential counts. uNGAL measurements and monocyte counts can be helpful in children with suspected UTIs.

  • It is the advantage of PLC that digitalization and networking of existing facility can be organized at low price because there is no need further construction of communication line considering that home appliance, information device and various kind of control devices are digitalized at low price. Moreover, AMR(Automatic Meter Reading) is very attractive to utility company because not only does it reduce the cost of reading meter, but also it can control and monitor the demand for energy. So, it can solve the consumers problem best and easily. It also can be easily realized that the utilities can expand there areas to values-added service through existing network. The performance of the PLC modem which is being developed now is not moven enough and much more test for outdoor modem is needed especially. Therefore, we, KEPRI, concentrate our efforts on configuring AMR system for test and investigation of the actual performance of various kinds ...

  • Oryza sativa cv. Mihyangbyo is one of several recently developed varieties of rice; characterized by high levels of aromatic components, which may increase its sensory and nutritional properties. In conjunction with our continuing investigation of bioactive components of improved grain varieties, a quinolone alkaloid was isolated from the n-butanol soluble fraction of the aleurone layer of Oryza sativa cv. Mihyangbyo (Gramineae) through activity-guided fractionation and isolation. The compound exhibited moderate antineoplastic activity in a human leukemia cell line (U937) with an $IC_{50}$/ value of 118.1 ug/mL, based on the MTT(3-[4, 5]dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) cell proliferation assay. The chemical structure of the functional compound was determined, based on physical and spectroscopic characteristics.
