  • This paper aims to evaluate the effect of typhoons on fatigue damage accumulation in steel decks of long-span suspension bridges. The strain-time histories at critical locations of deck sections of long-span bridges during different typhoons passing the bridge area are investigated by using on-line strain data acquired from the structural health monitoring system installed on the bridge. The fatigue damage models based on Miner's Law and Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) are applied to calculate the increment of fatigue damage due to the action of a typhoon. Accumulated fatigue damage during the typhoon is also calculated and compared between Miner's Law and the CDM method. It is found that for the Tsing Ma Bridge case, the stress spectrum generated by a typhoon is significantly different than that generated by normal traffic and its histogram shapes can be described approximately as a Rayleigh distribution. The influence of typhoon loading on accumulative fatigue damage is more significant than that due to normal traffic loading. The increment of fatigue damage generated by hourly stress spectrum for the maximum typhoon loading may be much greater than those for normal traffic loading. It is, therefore, concluded that it is necessary to evaluate typhoon induced fatigue damage for the purpose of accurately evaluating accumulative fatigue damage for long-span bridges located within typhoon prone regions.

  • Damage from typhoon disaster can be mitigated by grasping and dealing with the damage promptly for the regions in typhoon track. What is this work, a technique to analyzed dangerousness of typhoon should be presupposed. This study estimated 10m level wind speed using 700hPa wind by typhoon, referring to GPS dropwindsonde study of Franklin(2003). For 700hPa wind, 30km resolution data of Regional Data Assimilation Prediction System(RDAPS) were used. For roughness length in estimating wind of 10m level, landuse data of USGS are employed. For 10m level wind speed of Typhoon Rusa in 2002, we sampled AWS point of $7.4\sim30km$ distant from typhoon center and compare them with observational data. The results show that the 10m level wind speed is the estimation of maximum wind speed which can appear in surface by typhoon and it cannot be compared with general hourly observational data. Wind load on domestic buildings relies on probability distributions of extreme wind speed. Hence, calculated 10m level wind speed is useful for estimating the damage structure from typhoon.

  • Since typhoon is a critical meteorological disaster, some advanced countries have developed typhoon damage prediction models. However, although South Korea is vulnerable to typhoons, there is still shortage of study in typhoon damage prediction model reflecting the vulnerability of domestic building and features of disaster. Moreover, many studies have been only focused on the characteristics and typhoon and regional characteristics without various influencing factors. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze typhoon damage by path and develop to prediction model for building damage ratio by using multiple regression analysis. This study classifies the building damages by typhoon paths to identify influencing factors then the correlation analysis is conducted between building damage ratio and their factors. In addition, a multiple regression analysis is applied to develop a typhoon damage prediction model. Four categories; typhoon information, geography, construction environment, and socio-economy, are used as the independent variables. The results of this study will be used as fundamental material for the typhoon damage prediction model development of South Korea.

  • We surveyed the coastal structure damage created by typhoon ‘Maemi’, which heavily struck the Korean peninsula on September 12, 2003. The survey revealed that high tides and strong winds induced by the typhoon were the main causes of the coastal damage, especially in the Busan areas. Though some experimental real-time coastal monitoring stations captured the typhoon movements at the critical time, more systematic and complete system should be implemented to save human lives and property from huge typhoon disasters.

  • In this study, the typhoon damage forecasting model was developed for southern inland district. The typhoon damage in the inland district is caused by heavy rain and strong winds, variables are many and varied, but the damage data of the inland district are not enough to develop the model. The hydrological data related to the typhoon damage were hour maximum rainfall amount which is accumulated 3 hour interval, the total rainfall amount, the 1-5 day anticipated rainfall amount, the maximum wind speed and the typhoon center pressure at latitude 33° near the Jeju island. The Multivariate Analysis such as cluster Analysis considering the lack of damage data and principal component analysis removing multi-collinearity of rainfall data are adopted for the damage forecasting model. As a result of applying the developed model, typhoon damage estimated and observed values were up to 2.2 times. this is caused it is difficult to estimate the damage caused by strong winds and it is assumed that the local rainfall characteristics are not considered properly measured by 69 ASOS.

  • When typhoon occurs, the meteorological conditions get worse and can cause a large damage from storm and flood . This damage, however, can be minimized if a precise analysis of the runoff characteristics by typhoon tracks is used in the flood contorl This paper aims at the analysis of storm occurrence and runoff characteristics by typhoon tracks in Nakdong river basin. Therefore, the data of 14 typhoons which invaded Nakdong river basin during the period from 1975 to 1991 were collected, analyzed, and studied. The major results of this study are as followings; 1) The frequency of the typhoon occurrence here in Korea was affected by the storms three times a year on the average. The highest-recorded frequency was during the months of July to September. 2) The survey of the track characteristics depending on the forms of the storm in the Nakdong river basin showed that typhoon storm advanced from the south of the basin to the north, while the frontal type storm was most likely to advanced from the west to the north. 3) Typhoon tracks are classified into three categories, 6 predictors with high correlation coefficient are finally selected, and stepwise multiple regression method are used to establish typhoon strom forecasting models. 4) The riview on the directions of progress of the storm made it clear that the storm moving downstream from upstream of the basin could develop into peak discharge for ca short time and lead to more flood damage than in any other direction.

  • The purpose of this study is the impact of the typhoon damage to housing and facilities in rural areas. House of damage, as well as the only including damage of facilities in rural areas, particularly greenhouse(Glass greenhouse, Plastic greenhouse, Vinyl greenhouse) leads to damage of crops the scale of the damage increases. In this study, focused on Jeollabuk-do area, accompanying him, the number of gale damage and evaluate the extent of the damage to the typhoon. And aims to provide basic data for the rural areas of strong winds and typhoons preparedness and facility design based on the results. Judging from the results of the analysis of natural disasters caused by typhoons and strong winds, the city formed mainly in the area than in the plains or coastal rural areas compared to other areas more damage can appear. In recent years, many design maximum wind speed of 40m/s wind over because disaster type, even if the standard installation, preferably determined through a precise structural analysis to ensure the structural history of acting urgently.

  • The most efficient measures to reduce damage from natural disasters include activities which prevent disasters in advance, decrease possibility of disasters and minimize the scale of damage. Therefore, developing of the risk assessment model is very important to reduce the natural disaster damage. This study estimated a typhoon damage which is the biggest damage scale among increased natural disasters in Korea along with climate change. The results of 3-second gust at the height of 10m level from the typhoon 'Maemi' which did considerable damage to Korean in 2003, using the wind data at the height of 700 hPa. September 12th 09 LST~13th 12 LST period by the time a typhoon Maemi approached to the Korean peninsula. This study estimate damage amount using 'Fragility curve' which is the damage probability curve about a certain wind speed of the each building component factors based on wind load estimation results by using 3-second gust. But the fragility curve is not to Korea. Therefore, we use the fragility curves to FPHLM(FDFS, 2005). The result of houses damage amount is about 11 trillion 5 million won. This values are limit the 1-story detached dwelling, $62.51\sim95.56\;m^2$ of total area. Therefore, this process is possible application to other type houses.

  • In this study was investigated and analyzed of damage characteristics for infrastructures by typhoon that have been many occur. The objective Structures were the road and hydraulic structure. The road structure was included the cut-slopes, retaining walls and bridges. The hydraulic structure is divided with the dike, small-scale dam, reservoir and floodgate. The analysis result of the bridge damage cause is river bottom height increase and passage ability decrease. The principal damage reasons of the cut-slope structure are weakening the ground due to the localized torrential downpour and drainage defective. Also, the principal damage reasons of the small-scale dam, reservoir, dike and the floodgate are continuous collapse of dike beside the floodgate. And we divided a typhoon damage occurrence cause with artificial and natural. As the result of analysis, the many damage occurrence cause will be removed by system improvement and technical development.
