Monthly changes of the gonad follicle index (GFI), reproductive cycle, egg-diameter composition, first sexual maturity of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, were studied based on the samples which have been collected from the intertidal zone of Poryong west coast of Korea, from January to December, 1996. C. gigas, is dioecious, while a few individuals are alternatively hermaphroditic. Monthly variation of gonad follicle index (GFI) used for determination of spawning period, coincided with the reproductive cycle. GFI increased from April when seawater temperatures gradually increased and reached the maximum in May. And then, GFI sharply decreased from June to September due to spawning. Reproductive cycle of this species can be divided into five successive stages: in females, early active stage (March to April), late active stage (April to May), ripe stage (May to August), partially spawned stage (June to September) and spent/inactive stage (September to February); in males, early active stage (February to March), late active stage (April to May), ripe stage (May to September), partially spawned stage (June to September) and spent/ inactive stage (September to February). The diameter of fully mature eggs are approximately 50um. Spawning occurred from June to September, and two spawning peaks were observed in June and August when the seawater temperature was above $20^{\circ}C$. Percentages of the first sexual maturity of males of 20.1-25.0 mm in shell height were over $50\%$, while those of females of 25.1-30.0 mm in shell height were over $50\%$. All the males of > 30.1 mm and all the females of ^gt; 35.1 mm completed their first sexual maturity. The results suggest that C. gigas has a protandry phenomenon. Sex ratios of 919 oysters observed were 453 females $(49.29\%)$, 429 males $(46.68\%)$, 16 hermaphrodites $(1.74\%)$, and 21 indeterminate individuals $(2.29\%)$. In age class I, sex ratio of males were $64.00\%$, thus, a higher percentage than that of females. It was noted that $64.00\%$ of the young males (age class I) were more functional than females in age class I, but 2-3 year-old oysters showed higher percentage of females. Percentages of hemaphrodites in 2-3 year classes were relatively higher than those in other year classes. Histological pattern of hermaphrodites can be divided into two types: Type I (hermaphrodite having a number of newly formed developing oocytes on the oogenic tissues within a degenerating spermatogenic follicle after discharge of numerous spermatozoa) and Type II (hermaphrodite having two separate follicles in the same gonad).

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical availability of submentoplasty for esthethic improvement of the cervico-facial region of patients with obtuse chin-neck angle. Materials and methods : Case 1. We evaluate the changes of submental line length and chin-neck angle of 35-year-old woman with skeletal Class III and mandibular excess with excessive submental fat before and after surgery: Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy(BSSRO) setback(5mm), Mandibular Angle Reduction, Reduction Malarplasty and Submentoplasty. In this case, It was done simultaneously with orthognathic surgery. Case 2. The changes of submental line length and chin-neck angle of 20-year-old man with skeletal class III and maxillary defiency were evaluated before surgery, at first surgery : Lefort I osteotomy(6mm posterior Impaction), BSSRO setback(9mm), Paranasal Augmentation and at second surgery: genioplasty(6mm advanced) with submentoplasty. In this case, submentoplasty and advancement genioplasty were done after 2 months post-operative periods. Results : Case 1. In case of the Skeletal Class III mandibular excess with submental fat deposit, It showed the improvement of submental angle and length of submental line after simultaneous submentoplasty. Submental angle is changed from $177^{\circ}$ (pre-op) to $151^{\circ}$ (post-op) and submental line length is changed from 8mm(pre-op) to 36mm(post-op). Case 2. The improvement of submental angle and length of submental line after delayed submentoplasty was aquired in case of the skeletal class III maxillary defiency. Submental angle is changed from $154^{\circ}$ (pre-op) to $161^{\circ}$ (first surgery) and to $153^{\circ}$ (second surgery) and submental line length is changed from 25mm(pre-op) to 19mm(first surgery) and to 23mm(second surgery). Conclusion : The results suggest that Submentoplasty is useful surgical procedure for esthethic improvement of the cervicofacial region of patients with obtuse chin-neck angle.
Maternal sensitivity and infant temperament were studied in relation to infant attachment security. Subjects were 47 one-year-old infants anti their mothers from intact upper-middle class families. Mothers sorted the Attachment Q-set (Waters, 1987, version 3.0) and filled out the Toddlers Temperament Questionnaire(Chu, 1992). Maternal sensitivity was observed in the home for two 3-hour sessions, and observers completed the Maternal Behavior Q-set(Pederson, Moran et al., 1990). Attachment security scores of the infants, using criterion scores developed with Korean infants, were 42, which is comparable to Previous studies. Infants who were securely attached to mothers showed more secure-based behaviors and compliance, enjoyed physical contacts, and showed less fussy/difficult behaviors with mothers. Mothers of girls were observed to be more sensitive to their infants' signals than mothers of boys. Maternal sensitivity scores were not related to infant security scores. However, maternal sensitivity was related to less compliance to mothers for boys.
The purpose of this study is to examine how science activities using nonfiction literature affectspreschool children's scientific process skills, attitudes and concepts. For the purposes of this study, two classes, consisting of four and five-year-old children in a kindergarten located in D city were selected. One class was designated as the experimental group and the other as the control group. The experimental group performed science activities using nonfiction literature, while the control group did not. Thisexperimental study was conducted over the course of 8 weeks. Analysis of data was performed by ANCOVA. The results of the posttest indicated that the experimental group which performed science activities using nonfiction literature showed an improvement in their process skills, scientific attitudes and scientific concepts compared with the control group.
This study investigated the effectiveness of the Developmentally Appropriate Instruction Model for Science(DAIM-S) on increasing scientific curiosity and problem solving in young children. Subjects were 60 5-year-old middle class children, randomly assigned to one of two groups: either the DAIM-S group or the direct instruction group. For 2 months, the children in both groups took part in 21 science activity sessions. Both before and after treatment, subjects were tested on curiosity and scientific problem solving. The DAIM-S group showed higher achievement than the direct instruction group in the acquisition of curiosity and scientific problem solving. From these results, the researchers suggest application of the DIAM-S to the science teaching of young children.
The purpose of this study was to explore the difference mother-child verbal interaction between wordless and narrative picture book. Forty-two 4-year-old middle class children(21 girls and 21 boys) and their mothers were observed in their home. Major findings were as follows: 1) Mothers' verbal interaction strategies shows difference according to the genre of the book. Mothers used more descriptive statement, descriptive questions, inferential statements, evaluative statements and elaborative feedback when sharing the wordless book than the narrative book. 2) Children differently interact when reading picture books of different genres. Children used more descriptive statements, inferential statements and elaborative feedback. 3) Compared with the narrative picture boot mother and child engaged in more turn-taking when reading the wordless picture book. 4) While the proportion of collaborative type was higher when reading the wordless boot the proportion of passive type was higher when the narrative book.
The treatment of skeletal Class III malocclusion in adolescents is challenging. Maxillary protraction, particularly that using bone anchorage, has been proven to be an effective method for the stimulation of maxillary growth. However, the conventional procedure, which involves the surgical implantation of mini-plates, is traumatic and associated with a high risk. Three-dimensional (3D) digital technology offers the possibility of individualized treatment. Customized mini-plates can be designed according to the shape of the maxillary surface and the positions of the roots on cone-beam computed tomography scans; this reduces both the surgical risk and patient trauma. Here we report a case involving a 12-year-old adolescent girl with skeletal Class III malocclusion and midface deficiency that was treated in two phases. In phase 1, rapid maxillary expansion and protraction were performed using 3D-printed mini-plates for anchorage. The mini-plates exhibited better adaptation to the bone contour, and titanium screw implantation was safer because of the customized design. The orthopedic force applied to each mini-plate was approximately 400-500 g, and the plates remained stable during the maxillary protraction process, which exhibited efficacious orthopedic effects and significantly improved the facial profile and esthetics. In phase 2, fixed appliances were used for alignment and leveling of the maxillary and mandibular dentitions. The complete two-phase treatment lasted for 24 months. After 48 months of retention, the treatment outcomes remained stable.
In the maxillary anterior region, reconstruction of the localized alveolar ridge defect is very important in enhancing the esthetics of fixed partial denture. A 40-year-old female patient presented with a chief complaint of the inconvenience and unesthetic problem of 3-unit maxillary anterior prosthesis due to alveolar ridge resorption. After removal of old prosthesis, intraoral examination revealed moderate (buccolingually 4 mm) ridge deficiency in missing tooth region, leading to the diagnosis of Class I alveolar ridge defect. One of the reconstruction techniques to overcome this problem might be a technique that combines two types of soft tissue augmentation techniques. The purpose of this paper was to demonstrate the new combined technique of roll flap and combination onlay-interpositional graft utilized to acquire sufficient dimension of recipient area by one time of operation and to present the esthetic improvement of fixed partial denture by using this procedure in case of maxillary anterior localized ridge defect.
The purpose of this study was to understand the pattern of health problems of post hysterectomy women by the period after their operation and to find out the related factors with health problems. A descriptive study was done using a survey methodology. The subjects were women who had undergone a hysterectomy for benign gynecological diseases at two general hospitals. They were all between one month and three year post hysterectomy as of July 15, 1985. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The percentages of the subject who were experiencing operative symptom of 1st, End and 3rd year group 53.8%, 46.2%, 37.4% respectively. The percentages of the subjects who were experiencing menopause symptom of 1st, 2nd and 3rd year group 39.0%, 35.0%, 33.7% respectively. 2. The operative factor scores of 1,2,3 year group were 20.218, 13.646, 14.030 respectively. The menopause factor scores of 1,2,3 year group were 19.055, 17.845, 17.606 respectively. 3. The sociodemographic & physiologic characteristics of the subject were as follows; the mean age of the subject was 44.47 years old, 56.2% of them were high school graduates, 73.5% had any religion, 18.3% had job, 72.6% were middle economic class, 54.3% had medical insurance, 78.4% lived in nuclei family system, the mean pregnancy number was 5.63, the mean delivery number was 2.92, 71.2% of them were diagnosed as myoma, and half of them had preserved their ovary. 4. No one factors among the 10 factors were indentified having any relation with health problem of post hysterectomy women.
Family has emerged as a key concept for health, and it has been identified as one of the most important conditions. The relationship between health habit and its management is different depending on family. The odd pair family, mostly rural lower income class, worry to have poor health because of no spouse and small family size. One thousand eight hundred and seventy(1870) subjects were collected in 9 provinces through the sampling of Probability Proportional to Size (PPS). Questionnaire method was conducted on health checking, bath states, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, and the prevalence of farmer's health related problems. The main results were as follows: 1) The characteristics of odd pair families are that the head of household is female(77% ), the size of family is small(1.76 persons), the education level is low(7.5 years for male, 3.1 years for female) and the age group is old (male: 89.78 year old, female: 73.69 year old). 2) For the odd pair family, the frequency of health checking is quite low with one or two times per year(l0.2%) and the rate of no-health checking is much higher(35.8%) .3) Bathing utility is not available 29.6% of the odd pair family and only cold water is supplied at home for the 11.5 % of them. However, for the paired family, 9.8 % of them has no bathing utility and the rate of the family supplied with only cold water is just 7.9%. 4) The bathing frequency score of odd pair family is l.74points for male and 1.25 points for female. 5) The rate of smoking habits for odd pair family is 68.5 % and specially it is 7.6% for female, which is higher comparing with that of pair family. 6) The smoking frequency score of odd pair family is 1.57 points. 7) Alcohol drinking frequency score of odd pair family is 1.79 points for male, and 3.24points for female. 8) Farmers' syndrome(FS) revealed 38.7% of odd pair family and it is lower than that of pair family(57.3%). Special pain of FS was huckle bone and muscle(28.4%) and articular pain(24.l %). The pain rate of huckle bone and muscle(43.l %) and articular pain(33.5%) were higher in a year in odd pair family were lower than those of pair family: farming machine caused accidents(6.5%) and pesticide poisoning(5.7%). l0) The odd pair family use more frequently medical clinic or public health center for the treatment of FS(74.7%) and pesticide poisoning(62.5%) than the pair family for FS(69.0%) and for pesticide poisoning(.53.6%). The score of FS treatment is 5.70 points for odd pair family and it is not significantly different from 5.62 points of the paired family. The result of pesticide poisoning treatment score is as same as that of FS.
