  • This paper has been presented the hydrodynamic effect by the journal speed, eccentricity and source positions in order to overcome the defects of air bearing such as low stiffness and damping coefficient. Choosing the two row source position of air bearing is different from existed investigations in the side of pressure distribution of air film because of the high speed of journal and the wedge effects by the eccentricity. These optimal chooses of the two row source positions enable us to improve the performance of the film reaction force and loading force as making the high speed spindle. In this paper, The pressure behavior in theory of air film according to the eccentricity of journal and the source positions analyzed. The results of investigated characteristics may be applied to precision devices like ultra-precision grinding machine and ultra high speed milling.

  • A parametric study for for the water entry of a two dimensional symmetric wedge with deadrise angle of 10 degrees was carried out to find out the most dominant parameter. Water entry problem with constant velocity is simplified as the stationary wedge in the way of the upcoming water surface. The calculated impact loads showed that the effect of the viscosity was not so important in this problem. For a given grid system a suitable time step size can be found. The most sensitive parameter was found to be the grid size.

  • The general scheme of an algorithm, called an ABS-FRE algorithm, for solving systems of fuzzy relation equations (systems of FRE) via the ABS algorithms is presented. As special cases, two particular algorithms for obtaining the greatest and minimal solutions of systems of FRE are described. Several new operations used in this scheme are given, for instance, operators $\veebar$ and $\underline{\wedge}$ called quasi-inverses of operators $\vee$ and $\wedge$, respectively, etc.

  • Slope stability analysis of the right abutment of a railway bridge proposed at about 350 m above the ground level, crossing a river and connecting two huge hillocks in the Himalayas, India is presented in this paper. The site is located in a highly active seismic zone. The rock slopes are intensely jointed and the joint spacing and orientation are varying at different locations. Static slope stability of the rock slope is studied using equivalent continuum approach through the most commonly used commercial numerical tools like FLAC and SLOPE/W of GEOSTUDIO. The factor of safety for the slope under static conditions was 1.88 and it was reduced by 46% with the application of earthquake loads in pseudo-static analysis. The results obtained from the slope stability analyses confirmed the global stability of the slope. However, it is very likely that there could be possibility of wedge failures at some of the pier locations. This paper also presents the results from kinematics of right abutment slope for the wedge failure analysis based on stereographic projections. Based on the kinematics, it is recommended to flatten the slope from 50o to 43o to avoid wedge failures at all pier locations.

  • The present study investigates convective heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics inside the rib-roughened cooling passage of the gas turbine blades. A square duct with rectangular ribs is used and $\wedge-$ and V-shape ribs with $60^{\circ}$ attack angle are installed on the test plate surfaces. Naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The ribs disturb the main flow resulting in the recirculation and secondary flows near the ribbed wall and the vortices near the side-wall. The local heat transfer and the secondary flow in the duct are changed largely according to the rib orientation. A square duct with $\wedge$ and V-shape ribs has two pairs of secondary flow because of the rib arrangement. So, the duct has complex heat/mass transfer distribution. The average heat/mass transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $\wedge-$ and V-shape ribs are higher than those with $90^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ attack angles. The average heat/mass transfer coefficient on the $\wedge-shape$ ribs is higher than that on the V-shape ribs. Also, the uniformity of heat/mass transfer coefficient on discrete ribs is higher than that on continuous rib.

  • Classical earth pressure theories normally assume that ground condition remains uniform for considerable distance from the wall, and that the movement of the wall is enough to result in the development of an active pressure distribution. In the case of many low gravity walls in cut, constructed, for example, by using gabions or cribs, this is not commonly the case. In strong ground a steep temporary face will be excavated for reasons of economy, and a thin wedge of backfill will be placed behind the wall following its construetion. A designer then has the difficulty of selecting appropriate soil parameters and a reasonable method of calculating the earth pressure on the w리1. This paper starts by reviewing the existing solutions applicable to such geometry. A new silo and a wedge methods are developed for static and dynamic cases, and the results obtained from these are compared with two experimental results which more correctly mod el the geometry and strength of the wall, the fill, and the soil condition. Conclusions are drawn concerning both the magnitute and distribution of earth pressures to be supported by such walls.
