Many experimental and numerical approaches have been developed to evaluate paving materials and to predict pavement response and distress. Micromechanical simulation modeling is a technology that can reduce the number of physical tests required in material formulation and design and that can provide more details, e.g., the internal stress and strain state, and energy evolution and dissipation in simulated specimens with realistic microstructural features. A clustered distinct element modeling (DEM) approach was implemented In the two-dimensional particle flow software package (PFC-2D) to study the complex behavior observed in asphalt mixture fracturing. The relationship between continuous and discontinuous material properties was defined based on the potential energy approach. The theoretical relationship was validated with the uniform axial compression and cantilever beam model using two-dimensional plane strain and plane stress models. A bilinear cohesive displacement-softening model was implemented as an intrinsic interface and applied for both homogeneous and heterogeneous fracture modeling in order to simulate behavior in the fracture process zone and to simulate crack propagation. A disk-shaped compact tension test (DC(T)) with heterogeneous microstructure was simulated and compared with the experimental fracture test results to study Mode I fracture. The realistic arbitrary crack propagation including crack deflection, microcracking, crack face sliding, crack branching, and crack tip blunting could be represented in the fracture models. This micromechanical modeling approach represents the early developmental stages towards a 'virtual asphalt laboratory,' where simulations of laboratory tests and eventually field response and distress predictions can be made to enhance our understanding of pavement distress mechanisms, such its thermal fracture, reflective cracking, and fatigue crack growth.
Alpha center theory which was first proposed by Stefanescu has been proved to be effective for the detection of the location of the conductive orebody. A numerical forward modeling was conducted to verify the effectiveness of this method. Field works were carried out along the three profiles in two different areas for the purpose of finding fractured zone which might be accompanied with the presence of the groundwater. And the results were modeled by alpha center method, which was later testified by wellproven 2-dimensional finite difference inversion scheme. Field data could be successfully modeled with this alpha center algorithm, especially for the smooth-varying resistivity models. For the abrupt change of the resistivity values, the alpha center coefficients have a tendency to be negative to simulate the steep resistivity gradients. This method is quite simple and easy for the future applications. The numerical calculation can be performed very quickly with the personal computers.
GaN deposition equipment and processes for the fabrication of white LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) using MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) were numerically modeled to analyze the effects of a reactive gas introduction strategy. The source gases, TMGa and $NH_3$, were injected from a shower head at the top of the chamber; the carrier gases, $H_2$ or $N_2$, were introduced using two types of injection structures: vertical and horizontal. Wafers sat on the holder at a radial distance between 100 mm and 150 mm. The non-uniformity of the deposition rates for vertical and horizontal injection were 4.3% and 3.1%, respectively. In the case of using $H_2$ as a carrier gas instead of $N_2$, the uniform deposition zone was increased by 20%.

A float-type weir has been proposed for the control of algal blooms in some of eutrophic reservoirs recently. It is known as a costly and ecologically sound method, but there is little understanding about the sustainability of this low-cost technology for reservoirs that are located in monsoon climate areas where large flood events during the summer cause high water surface fluctuations. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a skimmer weir aimed at controlling algal blooms in the lacustrine zone and near the drinking water withdrawal structures of Daecheong Reservoir under various hydrodynamic flow conditions. The effect of weir on the control of algal blooms was simulated using a laterally averaged two-dimensional hydrodynamic and eutrophication model that can accommodate vertical displacement of the weir following the water surface fluctuations. Numerical simulations were performed for two different hydrological conditions, 2001 and 2004 for representing drought year and normal year, respectively. The results showed that the weir is very effective method to control algal blooms in the reservoir by curtailing the transport of phosphorus and algae from contaminated inflow to the downstream lacustrine epilimnion during the draught year. However, large flood events occurred in 2004 transported nutrients and algae built upstream of the weir into the downstream euphotic zone by strong entrainments.

This paper presents an experimental and numerical study to investigate the behavior of the precast segmental concrete beams (PSCBs) utilizing high-strength concrete (HSC) connected in the zone of the maximum bending moment using steel extended endplate connections (EECs). The experimental study consisted of five beams as follows: The first beam was the control beam for comparison, which was an unconnected one-piece beam made of HSC. The other four other beams consisted of two identical pieces of precast concrete. An important point to be noted is that at the end of each piece, a steel plate was used with a thickness of 10 mm. Moreover, this steel plate was welded to the lower and upper reinforcing bars of the beam. Furthermore, the steel plate was made to connect the two pieces using the technique of EECs. Several variables were taken in these four beams, whether from the shape of the connection or enhancing the behavior of the connection using the post-tensioning technique. EECs without stiffeners were used for some of the tested beams. The behavior of these connections was improved using stiffeners and shear bolts. To get accurate results, a comparison was made between the behaviors of the five beams. Another important point to be noted is that Abaqus and SAP2000 programs were used to investigate the behavior of PSCBs and to ensure the accuracy of the modeling process which showed a good agreement with the experimental results. Additionally, the simplified modeling using SAP2000 was able to model the nonlinear behavior of PSCBs connected using steel EECs. It was found that the steel pre-tensioned bolted EECs, reinforced with steel stiffeners and shear anchors, could be used to connect the precast HSC segmental beams via the internal pre-stressing technique.
Objective of this paper is to develop the user mobility model(UMM) which is used for the performance analysis of location update and paging algorithm and at the same time, consider the user mobility pattern(UMP) in zone-based cellular networks. User mobility pattern shows correlation in space and time. UMM should consider these correlations of UMP. K-dimensional Markov chain is presented as a UMM considering them where the states of Markov chain are defined as the current location area(LA) and the consecutive LAs visited in the path. Also, a new two dimensional Markov chain composed of current LA and time interval is presented. Simulation results show that the appropriate size of K in the former UMM is two and the latter UMM reflects the characteristic of UMP well and so is a good model for the analytic method to solve the performance of location update and paging algorithm.
Using strong cation exchange simulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography, a nitrogen-phosphate-potassium (NPK) fertilizer is produced in a cost-effective manner. The SMB process operated in a non-traditional way is divided into production and regeneration sections for exclusion of undesirable ions, and composed of six zones including two wash-water zones. This paper addresses modeling and simulation studies on the ion-exchange SMB process, comparing simulation results with experimental data obtained both from a pilot plant and an industrial plant. The simulation results show a good agreement with in situ experimental data obtained in the two plants. The model equation validated by the experiments will be applicable for optimization problems to obtain optimum operating conditions of the process.
Thermal spray technology has been used in many industrial application. Especially, thermal spray coating have been employed with the purposes of achieving better resistances in abrasion, heat and corrosion. In the previous studies on the thermal spray coating, thermal spray characteristics from the perspective of combustion engineering have not been investigated sufficiently, while the material characteristics of the coated substrates have been investigated widely. In this study, the effect of spray particles on the flame behavior was experimentally investigated. The amount of the injected particles was measured using the light scattering method and the temperature of the particles was estimated using a two-color method. Various flame-spray interactions were observed and it was found that the high temperature zone near the flame is elongated by particles density. Based on these results, the applicability of the light scattering method and the two-color method was discussed.
Stability of a Bi-2223/Ag tape was studied by using a numerical method. A numerical modeling has been developed to analyze the dynamic evolution of normal zone in a composite tape Bi-2223/Ag. In this paper, the stability of HTS tape is studied by considering the non-uniform temperature distribution in a cross-sectional area. The finite-difference method(FDM) is used to solve the two-dimensional heat conduction equation. Two kinds of analyses are compared to quantify the critical disturbance energy fur quenching HTS tapes. One is the length-thickness(x-y) side and the other is the length-width(x-z) side. The results of analyses shows that the critical disturbance energies for each cases seem to be very close for considered Bi-2223/Ag tape.
The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) has attracted researcher's attention recently, due to its high conversion efficiency and its abundant fuel, carbon. A DCFC mathematical model has developed in two-dimensional, lab-scale, and considers Boudouard reaction and carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation. The model simulates the CO production by Boudouard reaction and additional electron production by CO oxidation. The Boudouard equilibrium strongly depends on operating temperature and affects the amount of produced CO and consequentially affects the overall fuel cell performance. Two different operating temperatures (973 K, 1023 K) has been calculated to discover the CO production by Boudouard reaction and overall fuel cell performance. Moreover, anode thickness of the cell has been considered to find out the influence of the Boudouard reaction zone in fuel cell performance. It was found that in high temperature operating DCFC modeling, the Boudouard reaction cannot be neglected and has a vital role in the overall fuel cell performance.
