  • This paper presents an algorithm for recognition of simple curved two dimensional objects. The algorithm is divided into four steps, determining threshold, edge finding, feature extracting and model matching. To evaluate the performance of this algorithm some experiments were conducted for various objects and illuminations. The results shows that the proposed algorithm can be effectively used for part recognition and quality inspection.

  • This paper proposes a snubber circuit for flying capacitor multilevel inverter and converter. The proposed snubber circuit makes use of Undeland snubber as basic snubber unit. It has such an advantage of Undeland snubber used in the two-level inverter. Compared with conventional RCD/RLD snubber for multileve1 inverter and converter, the proposed snubber keeps such good features as fewer number of components, reduction of voltage stress of main switching devices due to low overvoltage, and improved efficiency of system due to low loss snubber. In this paper, the proposed snubber is applied to three-level flying capacitor inverter and this feature is demonstrated by computer simulation and experimental result.

  • We present a relevance feedback approach based on multi-class support vector machine (SVM) learning and cluster-merging which can significantly improve the retrieval performance in region-based image retrieval. Semantically relevant images may exhibit various visual characteristics and may be scattered in several classes in the feature space due to the semantic gap between low-level features and high-level semantics in the user's mind. To find the semantic classes through relevance feedback, the proposed method reduces the burden of completely re-clustering the classes at iterations and classifies multiple classes. Experimental results show that the proposed method is more effective and efficient than the two-class SVM and multi-class relevance feedback methods.

  • Affective computing plays an important role in intelligent Human Computer Interactions(HCI). To detect emotional events, it is desirable to construct a computing model for extracting emotion related features from video. In this paper, we propose a statistical model based on the probabilistic distribution of low level features in video shots. The proposed method extracts low level features from video shots and then from a GMM(Gaussian Mixture Model) for them to detect emotional shots. As low level features, we use color, camera motion and sequence of shot lengths. The features can be modeled as a GMM by using EM(Expectation Maximization) algorithm and the relations between time and emotions are estimated by MLE(Maximum Likelihood Estimation). Finally, the two statistical models are combined together using Bayesian framework to detect emotional events in video.

  • The purpose of this study was to extract protypes from features and concrete images of Lotus and Crane patterns. A qualitative and a quantitative methods were used. Qualitative informations were obtained from depth Interviews for pattern selection and feature extraction, and quantitative informations from a quail-experiment for pattern caregorization. The subjects were 20 female design students and non-design, students in Teajon. The results were summerized into a similarity metrix which was interpreted by the cluster analysis and the multi-dimensional scling(MDS). The patterns for the study were grouped into 8 clusters. Four dimensions were chosen for the MDS. The location of each pattern was visualized in a 2-dimesional spaces and the location of each cluster in a 3-dimensional spaces. The first dimension, "Lotus" vs "Crane" refired to pattern types, and the second dimension, "realistic" vs "transformable", the transformability. The third dimension, "simple" vs "complex", refired to the degree of simplification, and the forth dimension, "continuous" vs "discontinuous", continuity. The results of the Quantitative analysis could be summerized into 3-level prototype hiararchy In the first level, the patterns were devided clearly into two groups. Lotus and Crane by pattern types. In the second levelk, each group was devided into twosubgroups by continuity. In the third, each subgroup was divided into four subgroups by transformability and the degree of simplification. Four protypes, the final targets of the present study, were extracted from the third level. The are Stylized, Realistic, Decorative, Abstract types.d from the third level. The are Stylized, Realistic, Decorative, Abstract types.

  • An investigation on the zonal communities in Chokchon macrotidal flat, Incheon, Korea, was carried out on July 1994, eight years after the initial survey done by Frey et al. (1987a and b). A survey transect (4 km long) was established with 41 stations having an equi-interval of 100 m. Macrofaunas were sampled in July 1994. R-mode cluster analysis and ordination analysis (detrended correspondence analysis or DCA) were performed. The aims of the investigation were to: (1) observe the distribution and abundance patterns, including zonation of benthic macrofaunal communities in the area; and (2) gain information about faunal changes between two different periods. The primary feature of distribution was corresponded with Frey's zonation, and this was shaped by three level-specific species groups. Significant changes in dominant species were detected when compared with the faunal assemblages of 1986. The bivalve mollusk, Meretrix petechialis, seemed to have disappeared. Two newly arrived organic pollution indicator species, Theora fragilis and Capitella capitata, were regarded as impregnable proof of response to eutrophication, although the concrete evidence on the eutrophication source was not found.

  • In this paper, we describe a novel method for recognizing human actions from different views via view knowledge transfer. Our approach is characterized by two aspects: 1) We propose a unsupervised topic transfer model (TTM) to model two view-dependent vocabularies, where the original bag of visual words (BoVW) representation can be transferred into a bag of topics (BoT) representation. The higher-level BoT features, which can be shared across views, can connect action models for different views. 2) Our features make it possible to obtain a discriminative model of action under one view and categorize actions in another view. We tested our approach on the IXMAS data set, and the results are promising, given such a simple approach. In addition, we also demonstrate a supervised topic transfer model (STTM), which can combine transfer feature learning and discriminative classifier learning into one framework.

  • Social network has been expected to increase the value of social capital through online user interactions which remove geographical boundary. However, online users in social networks face challenges of assessing whether the anonymous user and his/her providing information are reliable or not because of limited experiences with a small number of users. Therefore. it is vital to provide a successful trust model which builds and maintains a web of trust. This study aims to propose a prediction method for the interpersonal trust which measures the level of trust about information provider in Facebook. To develop the prediction method. we first investigated behavioral research for trust in social science and extracted 5 antecedents of trust : lenience, ability, steadiness, intimacy, and similarity. Then we measured the antecedents from the history of interactive behavior and built prediction models using the two decision trees and a computational model. We also applied the proposed method to predict interpersonal trust between Facebook users and evaluated the prediction accuracy. The predicted trust metric has dynamic feature which can be adjusted over time according to the interaction between two users.

  • A hypothetical core destructive accident (HCDA) has received widespread attention as one of the most serious accidents in sodium-cooled fast reactors. This study combined recent advantages in numerical methods to realize realistic modeling of the complex fluid-structure interactions during HCDAs in a full-scale sodium-cooled fast reactor. The multi-material arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method is used to describe the fluid-structure interactions inside the container. Both the structural deformations and plug rises occurring during HCDAs are evaluated. Two levels of expansion energy are considered with two different reactor models. The simulation results show that the container remains intact during an accident with small deformations. The plug on the top of the container rises to an acceptable level after the sealing between the it and its support is destroyed. The methodology established in this study provides a reliable approach for evaluating the safety feature of a container design.
