  • This paper proposes an expert system which can enhance the accuracy of real-time bus reconfiguration strategy by adopting local minimum tree search method and minimize the spreading effect of the fault by considering totally the operating condition when a main transformer fault occurs in the automated substation. The local minimum tree search method to expand the best-first search method. This method has an advantage which can improve the performance of solution within the limits of the real-time condition. The inference strategy proposed expert system consists of two stages. The first stage determines the switching candidate set by searching possible switching candidates starting from the main transformer or busbar related to the event. And, second stage determines the rational real-time bus reconfiguration strategy based on heuristic rules for the obtained switching candidate set. Also, this paper studies the generalized distribution substation modelling using graph theory and a substation database is designed based on the study result. The inference engine of the expert system and the substation database is implemented in MFC function of Visual C++. Finally, the performance and effectiveness of the proposed expert system is verified by comparing the best-first search solution and local minimum tree search solution based on diversity event simulations for typical distribution substation.

  • This paper describes a new economical voltage sag and swell generator suitable to the evaluations of high power custom power devices such as DVR (Dynamic Voltage Restorer) and DSTATCOM (Distribution Static Compensator). This system was designed to generate the several power quality disturbances in MVA power ratings - voltage sag and swell, under voltage, over voltage and harmonic distortions. The basic idea for voltage sag and swell is to use the voltage drop across a reactor, while the voltage swell is to use the step-up transformer and the TCR(Thyristor Controlled Reactor). In this paper, two identical 3 phase TCRs and a step-up transformer with tap changer are used. Additional harmonic filters are added to reduce the voltage distortion when TCRs are operated. Simulation results are given for several cases of voltage sag and swell generations.

  • When a circuit breaker is opened, a large capacitance around the buses, the circuit breaker and the potential transformer (PT) might cause PT ferroresonance. During PT ferroresonance, the iron core repeats saturation and unsaturation even though the supplied voltage is a rated voltage. This paper describes an analytical analysis of PT ferroresonance in the transient-state. To analyze ferroresonance analytically, the iron core is modelled by a simplified two-segment core model in this paper. Thus, a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) for the flux linkage is changed into a linear ODE with constant coefficients, which enables an analytical analysis. In this simplified model, each state, which is either saturated or unsaturated state, corresponds to one of the three modes, i.e. overdamping, critical damping and underdamping. The flux linkage and the voltage in each state are obtained analytically by solving the linear ODE with constant coefficients. The proposed transient analysis is effective in the more understanding of ferroresonance and thus can be used to design a ferroresonance prevention or suppression circuit of a PT.

  • This paper presents the photonic bandgap structure that has a defect mode within a broad stopband. In order to create a broad stopband, we eliminated one of periodic stopbands of PBG structure by using a quarter-wavelength transformer and cascaded another PBG structure having a center frequency corresponding to the eliminated stopband. We have demonstrated that it is a simple and effective method that can solve an overlapping problem of periodic stopband in two cascaded PBG structures.

  • The development of overload management systems for distribution transformers offers new opportunities for improving the reliability of distribution systems. It allows network planners to optimize the system resource utilization and investment cost. Such an improvement in the flexibility of the distribution network is only possible if the operator has more accurate knowledge of the realtime conditions of distribution transformers. In this paper, we present an improved overload decision system for distribution transformers using realtime monitoring data. Our study can be categorized into two parts: (a) improvement in the criteria for judging the overload conditions of distribution transformers and (b) development of an overload evaluation system using realtime monitoring data. In order to determine the overload criteria, overload experiments are performed on sample transformers; the results of these experiments are used to define the relationship between the transformer overload and the increase in the top-oil temperature. To verify the accuracy of the experimental results, field tests are performed using specially manufactured transformers, the loads and top-oil temperatures of which can be measured. For arriving at online overload decisions, we propose methods whereby the measured load curve can be converted into an overload characteristic curve and the overload time can be calculated for any load condition. The developed system is able to evaluate the overload for individual distribution transformers and calculate the losses using realtime monitoring data.

  • The primary insulation system used in an oil-filled transformer is kraft paper, wood, porcelain and oil. Modern transformers use paper that is chemically treated to improve its tensile strength properties and resistance to aging caused by immersion in oil. But these insulation papers are mainly aged to thermal stress. Over the course of the insulation paper and oil's life it is exposed to high temperatures, oxygen and water. Its interaction with the steel of the tank and core plus the copper and aluminium of the windings will eventually cause the chemical properties of the oil to decay. High temperature have an effect on mechanical strength of cellulous paper using the layer insulation. We made two aging cell in which thermal aging tests of insulation papers and mineral oil are conducted. It is measured dielectric strength, number of acid, moisture, etc. of insulation paper and oil aged in the aging cells.

  • In this paper, three kinds of PWM strategies for a three-phase current-fed dc/dc converter are proposed and compared in terms of losses and voltage transfer ratio. Each PWM strategy is described graphically and their switching losses are analyzed. With the proposed PWM C strategy, one turn-off switching of each bridge switch is eliminated to reduce switching losses under the same switching frequency. In addition, RMS current through the bridge switches is lowered by using parallel connection between two bridge switches and thus, conduction losses of the switches are reduced. Further, copper losses of the transformer are decreased due to the reduced RMS current of each transformer's winding. Therefore, total losses are minimized and the efficiency of the converter is improved by using the proposed PWM C strategy. Digital signal processor (DSP: TI320LF2407) and a field-programmable gate array (FPGA: EPM7128) board are used to generate PWM patterns for three-phase bridge and clamp MOSFETs. A 500W prototype converter is built and its experimental results verify the validity of the proposed PWM strategies.

  • This paper proposes a new single-phase power converter topology for changing the frequency of AC voltage. The proposed single-phase frequency converter (SFC) includes a T-type multi-level power converter (TMPC), a frequency decoupling transformer (FDT) and a digital signal processor (DSP). The TMPC can convert a 60 Hz AC voltage to a DC voltage and then convert the DC voltage to a 50 Hz AC voltage. Therefore, the output currents of the two T-type power switch arms have 50 Hz and 60 Hz components. The FDT is used to decouple the 50 Hz and 60 Hz components. The salient feature of the proposed SFC is that only one power electronic converter stage is used since the functions of the AC-DC and DC-AC power conversions are integrated into the TMPC. Therefore, the proposed SFC can simplify both the power circuit and the control circuit. In order to verify the functions of the proposed SFC, a hardware prototype is established. Experimental results verify that the performance of the proposed SFC is as expected.

  • In this study, an application of Finite Element Method which, in principle, based on variational calculus has been presented for the two-dimensional analysis of magnetic flux distribution in the shell type core of single phase transformer. The necessary stationarity condition of energy functional and boundary conditions were determined under the assumptions that the electromagnetic field considered is stationary and that the effect of eddy current is negligible. In the process of application the domain of magnetic field was divided into triangle subsectional elements and then the matrix equations were constructed for the respective triangular element and for those of all after the manipulation of minimization process to the vector potential of magnetic field at the each vertex of the element. Furthermore the numerical computation for the equations was guided by the Gaussian Elimination Methods. As the results obtained, it is found that the aspect of magnetic flux distribution inside the core as well as the leakage flux profile at the vicinity of the inner leg of the core is not much different from the well-known distribution profile of magnetic flux, however, the procedure shows to possess the merit of the uniquely deterministic nature for the flux distribution at the desired points.
