  • The measurements of velocity vectors are made in the near wake(X/d=5.0) of a circular cylinder with serrated fins. Velocity of fluid which flow through fins decreases as increasing fin height and freestream velocity and decreasing fin pitch. Therefore the velocity distribution at X/d=0.0 has lower gradient with increasing freestream velocity and fin height and decreasing fin pitch. The discontinuity of the streamwise velocity gradient is observed near the fin edge and causes significant changes in V-component velocity distribution in the near wake. This change attributes to the differences in Strouhal number and entraintment flow behavior. Increased turbulent intensity around a circular cylinder due to the serrated fins and entrainment flow are important factors for the recovery of velocity defect. The widths of velocity and turbulent intensity distribution of fin tubes are wider than those of a circular cylinder. The normalized velocity and turbulent intensity distributions with a hydraulic diameter which is proposed in this paper are in closer agreement with those of a circular cylinder.

  • Turbulence properties of a cylinder wake (d=10 mm) have been investigated with a new volume PTV algorithm. The measurement system consists of two-high-cameras(1 $k{\times}1$ k), a Nd-Yag laser and a host computer. A fitness function representing three-dimensional coherency has been adopted to sort out spurious vectors. A hybrid fitness function representing the relations between the fitness and the three-dimensional shortest distances constructed by the two collinears of the two cameras has been also adopted. The constructed algorithm has been employed for the measurements of the cylinder wakes. The Reynolds numbers tested in this paper are 360, 540, 720, 900, 1080 and 1260. More than 10,000 instantaneous 3D vectors have been obtained by the constructed system. The volumetric distributions of the turbulence intensities (for u', v', w') indicate that clearly different patterns for all Reynolds numbers and imply that a regular pattern (like a similarity rule) for the turbulent properties exists.

  • A Multi-Sectional 3D-PTV algorithm was developed to reduce the calculation time of the conventional GA-3D-PTV. The hardware system of the constructed 3D-PTV system consists of two high-speed cameras ($1,024\times1,018$ pixels, 60 fps), a metal halogen lamp (400W) and a host computer. The sphere(D=30mm) is suspended in a circulating water channel $(300mm\times300mm\times1,200m)$ and Reynolds number is 1,130. About 5,000 instantaneous three-dimensional velocity vectors have been obtained by the constructed 3D-PTV system. Turbulent properties such as turbulent intensity, Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy were obtained. An eigenvalue analysis was carried out using the obtained instantaneous 3D velocity vectors to get the topological relations of the asymptotically stable critical point. Two structured shells, inner shell and outer shell, were found in the sphere wake and their motions were clarified by the measured data.

  • The present study aims to generate turbulent inflow data to more accurately represent the turbulent flow around a square cylinder when the inflow turbulence level is significant. The modified random flow generation (RFG) technique in conjunction with a previously developed LES code is successfully adopted into a finite element based fluid flow solver to generate the required inflow turbulence boundary conditions for the three-dimensional (3-D) LES computations of transitional turbulent flow around a square cylinder at Reynolds number of 22,000. The near wall region is modelled without using wall approximate conditions and a wall damping coefficient is introduced into the calculation of sub-grid length scale in the boundary layer of the cylinder wall. The numerical results obtained from simulations are compared with each other and with the experimental data for different inflow turbulence boundary conditions in order to discuss the issues such as the synthetic inflow turbulence effects on the 3-D transitional flow behaviour in the near wake and the free shear layer, the basic mechanism by which stream turbulence interacts with the mean flow over the cylinder body and the prediction of integral flow parameters. The comparison among the LES results with and without inflow turbulence and the experimental data emphasizes that the turbulent inflow data generated by the present RFG technique for the LES computation can be a viable approach in accurately predicting the effects of inflow turbulence on the near wake turbulent flow characteristics around a bluff body.

  • The flow analysis method which had been developed for the numerical calculation of 3-dimensional, incompressible and turbulent flow within an axial compressor was extended to the flow field within centrifugal impeller. In this method based on the SIMPLE(Semi Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equations) algorithm, the coordinate transformation was adopted and the standard k-.epsilon. model using wall function was used for turbulent flow analysis. The calculated flow fields have agreed very well with measurement results. Especially, 3-dimensional and viscous flow characteristics including secondary flows, jet-wake flow and decreased pressure rise along impeller passage, which can't be predicted by inviscid Q3D calculation were predicted very reasonably.

  • A new stereoscopic PIV has been constructed using two CCD cameras, stereoscopic photogrammetry, and 3D-PTV principle. The capability of the developed stereoscopic PIV was verified through a test on the Standard Images which are provided on the website of VSJ. The arrangement of the two cameras was based on angular position For the acquisition of 3D velocity vectors, 2D velocity vectors were obtained using the gray-level cross-correlation method from the two camera images and they were matched stereoscopically. The wake of a circular cylinder was measured and turbulent properties were presented.

  • Two-dimensional turbulent wake flow past a rectangular cylinder is investigated experimentally by using the linearized constant temperature hot-wire anemometer. Some of turbulent characteristics are obtained at the range of X=6B-500B downstream from the cylinder and the Reynolds number range is 500-2800. For the statistical treatment, autocorrelation coefficient, probability density function and power spectral density function are obtained by using the signal analyzer. It is clear that coherent structure of strong periodic eddies exists to the position of 20B downstream from the cylinder, and its feature is similar to round type as nearer to the cylinder while it is stretched longitudinally along with flow direction as the distance from the cylinder is increased to downstream.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate influence of flow conditions on a boundary layer to the near-wake of a flat plate. The flow condition in the vicinity of trailing edge that is influenced by upstream condition history is an essential factor that determines the physical characteristics of a near-wake. Various tripping wires were used to change boundary layer flow condition of upstream at the freestream velocity of 6.0 m/sec. Measurements of the boundary layer and near-wake according to the change of upstream conditions were conducted by using both I-probe(55P14 for boundary layer) and X-probe(55P61 for wake). Normalized velocity profiles of the boundary layer were shown the flow types such as laminar boundary layer, transition, and turbulent boundary layer at 0.95C from the leading edge. The velocity and turbulence intensity profiles of the near-wake for the case of laminar boundary layer at the flat plate surface exhibited a defect and a double peak showing perfect symmetry, respectively.

  • An experimental study Is conducted in a four-vane linear cascade in order to examine the influence of the wake behind rectangular bars on the flow and heat transfer characteristics. Flow and heat transfer measurements are made for the inlet Reynolds number of 66000(based on chord length and free-stream velocity). Turbulent intensity and stress are measured using a hot-wire anemometer, and to measure the convective heat transfer coefficients on the blade surface liquid crystal/gold film Intrex technique is used. Each of experimental cases is characterized by the unsteadiness measured at the entrance of the cascade. The wake behind the rectangular bars enhances the turbulent motion of the flow in the cascade passage. It also promotes the boundary layer development and transition. The results show that heat transfer coefficients on the blade surface increase with increasing unsteadiness.

  • This work investigates the subcritical free-shear prism wake at Re=22,000 by the Koopman analysis using the Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) algorithm. The Koopman model linearized nonlinearities in the stochastic, homogeneous anisotropic turbulent wake, generating temporally orthogonal eigen tuples that carry meaningful, coherent structures. Phenomenological analysis of dominant modes revealed their physical interpretations: Mode 1 renders the mean-field dynamics, Modes 2 describes the roll-up of the Strouhal vortex, Mode 3 describes the Bloor-Gerrard vortex resulting from the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability inside shear layers, its superposition onto the Strouhal vortex, and the concurrent flow entrainment, Modes 6 and 10 describe the low-frequency shedding of turbulent separation bubbles (TSBs) and turbulence production, respectively, which contribute to the beating phenomenon in the lift time history and the flapping motion of shear layers, Modes 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9 are the relatively trivial harmonic excitations. This work demonstrates the Koopman analysis' ability to provide insights into free-shear flows. Its success in subcritical turbulence also serves as an excellent reference for applications in other nonlinear, stochastic systems.
