In this study, we experimentally investigated that the optimization of pulsating jet to reduce the separated flow region behind the vertical fence. The vertical fence was submerged in the turbulent boundary layer in the circulating water channel and we applied phase averaged PIV method to measure the instantaneous velocity fields around the fence. One cycle of pulsating jet is divided into 20 phases and grabbed total 200 instantaneous velocity fields at each phase. The experiments were performed by varying the frequency, maximum jet velocity and the shape of pulsating jet wave. Pulsating jet was precisely made by piston-type pump controlled by the computer. The obtained results were compared with normal fence flow. From this study, we found there is the specific frequency which is effective in reducing the reattachment region.

Three dimensional flow fields around passenger car body was computed by PAM-FLOW, well-known and validated computer program for thermal and fluid analysis. Regarding the computational method, a Navier-Stokes solver based on finite element method with various turbulent models and adaptive grid technique (H-refinement)was adopted. The results were physically reasonable and compared with experimental data, giving good agreement. It was found that three dimensional flow simulation with H-refinement technique had potential for prediction of low fie이 around vehicle and the ability to predict vortex in the wake, which is vital for CFD to be used for automobile aerodynamic calculation.
An experimental investigation has been carried out for two circular cylinders having different groove configurations(U and V-shape). The results were compared with those for the smooth circular cylinder. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles of wake behind the cylinders were measured with varying the Reynolds number $Re=8000{\sim}14,000$ based on the cylinder diameter. As a results, the U-groove circular cylinder was found to be most effective riblet shape with reducing the drag up to 21%. As the Reynolds number increases, the vortex shedding frequency of the grooved cylinders becomes a little larger, compared to the smooth cylinder. The flow visualization using the smoke-wire technique was also carried out to see the flow structure qualitatively.

In this study. a numerical analysis has been performed for the turbulent flow around a 15,000TEU twin-skeg container ship using a commercial CFD code. FLUENT. The computed results have been compared with the model test data from MOERI. We investigated viscous resistance coefficient. wake distribution and characteristics of the shear flow according to the grid numbers. Although the free surface is approximated by the plane of symmetry in this work. the calculated axial velocity and transverse vector show a good agreement with the MOERI experimental data except for the region of 0.9 level of axial velocity at the propeller plane. The numerical analysis show that commercial CFD code is useful tool for the evaluation of complex hull form with twin-skegs.

An experimental study is performed on the turbulent swirling flow behind a crcular cylinder using 2-D PIV technique. The Reynolds numbers investigated are 10.000, 15,000. 20.000 and 25.000. The mean velocity vector, time mean axial velocity, turbulence intensity, kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress behind the cylinder are measured before and behind the cylinder along the test tube. A comparison is included without swirling flow behind a circular and square cylinder. The recirculation zones are shown unsymmetric profiles.

An experiment was carried out to figure out the turbulence flow characteristics in the wake of the transom stern's 2-dimensional section by 2-frame grey level cross correlation PIV method at Re= $3.5{\times}10^3$, Re= $7.0{\times}10^3$. The angles of transom stern are $45^{\circ}$(Model "A"), $90^{\circ}$(Model "B") and $135^{\circ}$(Model "C") respectively. The depth of wetted surface is 40mm from free surface. Strong turbulence intensity appears at the interaction between the flow separation of the bottom of a model and the free surface. This study provides statistic flow information such as turbulence intensity, Reynolds stress and turbulence kinetic energy. Model C type (Raked transom) has low Reynolds stress and turbulence kinetic energy.
Investigation of leading edge impingement cooling for first stage rotor blades in an aero-engine turbine, its effect on rotor temperature and trailing edge wake loss have been undertaken in this study. The rotor is modeled with the nozzle for attaining a more accurate simulation. The rotor blade is hollowed in order for the coolant to move inside. Also, plenum with the 15 jet nozzles are placed in it. The plenum is fed by compressed fresh air at the rotor hub. Engine operational and real condition is exerted as boundary condition. Rotor is inspected in two states: in existence of cooling technique and non-cooling state. Three-dimensional compressible and steady solutions of RANS equations with SST K-ω turbulent model has been performed for this numerical simulation. The results show that leading edge is one of the most critical regions because of stagnation formation in those areas. Another high temperature region is rotor blade tip for existence of tip leakage in this area and jet impingement cooling can effectively cover these regions. The rotation impact of the jet velocity from hub to tip caused a tendency in coolant streamlines to move toward the rotor blade tip. In addition, by discharging used coolant air from the trailing edge and ejecting it to the turbines main flow by means of the slot in trailing edge, which could reduce the trailing edge wake loss and a total decrease in the blade cooling loss penalty.
For super long-span bridges, the aerodynamic forces induced by the flow passing the box girder should be considered carefully. And the Reynolds number sensitively of aerodynamic characteristics is one of considerable issue. In the study, a numerical study on the Reynolds number sensitivity of aerodynamic characteristic (flow pattern, pressure distribution and aerodynamic forces) of a twin-box girder were carried out using large eddy simulation (LES) with the dynamic Smagorinsky-Lilly subgrid model. The results show that the aerodynamic characteristics have strong correlation with the Reynolds number. At the leading edge, the flow experiences attachment, departure, and reattachment stages accompanying by the laminar transition into turbulence, causing pressure plateaus to form on the surface, and the pressure plateaus gradually shrinks. Around the gap, attributing that the flow experiences stages of laminar cavity flow, the wake with alternate shedding vortices, and turbulent cavity flow in sequence with an increase in the Reynolds number, the pressures around the gap vary greatly with the Reynold number. At the trailing edge, the pressure gradually recovers as the flow transits to turbulence (the flow undergoes wake instability, shear layer transition-reattachment station), In addition, at relative high Reynolds numbers, the drag force almost does not change, however, the lift force coefficient gradually decreases with an increase in Reynolds number.
The flow structures of turbulent shear layer behind oil fences with different tip configurations were investigated experimentally using flow visualization and PIV velocity field measurement. An oil fence was installed in a circulating water channel and the flow structure around the fence tip was mainly analyzed in this experiment. The four tip configurations tested in this experiment are knife edge; semi-circle edge, circular edge and rectangular edge. The 300 instantaneous velocity fields were measured using the single-frame PIV system and they were ensemble averaged to give the mean velocity field and spatial distribution of turbulent statistics. Free stream velocity was fixed at 10ms/sec and the corresponding Reynolds number based on the fence height was Re=4000. As a result, for the oil fence with rectangular edge, the streamwise velocity component was decreased. On the other hand it was increased for the oil fence with circular edge. For all four fences tested in this study, general flow pattern of the lower shear layer is analogous but the upper layer shows difference depending on the tip configurations. The oil fence with circular edge has more diffusive upper shear layer than that of the others. The shear layer of the oil fence with rectangular edge has relatively thin thickness. The oil fence with circular edge was found to be proper shape for tandem fence.
