  • Turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate was disturbed by installing an elliptic cylinder with an axis ratio of AR=2. For comparison, the same experiment was carried out for a circular cylinder having the same vertical height. The surface pressure and the heat transfer coefficient on the flat plate were measured with varying the gap distance between the elliptic cylinder and the flat plate. The mean velocity and the turbulent intensity profile of the streamwise velocity component were measured using a hot-wire anemometry. As a result, the flow structure and the local heat transfer rate were modified by the interaction between the cylinder wake and the turbulent boundary layer as a function of the critical gap ratio where the regular vortices start to shed. For the elliptic cylinder, the critical gap ratio is increased and the surface pressure on the flat plate is recovered rapidly at downstream location, compared with the equivalent circular cylinder. The maximum heat transfer rate occurs at the gap ratio of G/B = 0.5, where the flow interaction between the lower shear layer of the cylinder wake and the turbulent boundary layer is strong.

  • Immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann method (IBLBM) has been applied to simulate a turbulent flow over circular cylinder in a flow field effectively. Although IBLBM is very effective method to simulate the flow over a complex shape of obstacle in the flow field regardless of the constructed grids in the calculation domain, the results, however, become numerically unstable in high reynolds number flow. The most effective suggestion to archive the numerical stability in high Reynolds number flow is applying the multiple relaxation time (MRT) model instead of single relaxation time(SRT) model in the collision term of lattice Boltzmann equation. In the research MRT model for IBLBM was introduced and comparing the numerical results obtained by applying SRT and MRT. The hydraulic characteristic of cylinder in a flow field between two parallel plate at the range of $Re{\leqq}2000$represented and it is also compared the drag and lifting coefficients of the cylinder calculated by IBLBM with SRT and MRT model.

  • Stochastic nature of subgrid-scale stress causes the predictability problem in large eddy simulation (LES) by which the LES solution field decorrelates with field from filtered directnumerical simulation (DNS). In order to evaluate the predictability limit in a priori sense, the information on the interplay between resolved scale and subgrid-scale (SGS) is required. In this study, the analysis on the inter-scale interaction is performed by applying tophat and cutoff filters to DNS database of flow over a circular cylinder at Reynolds number of 3900. The effect of filter shape is investigated on the interpretation of correlation between scales. A critique is given on the use of tophat filter for SGS analysis using DNS database. It is shown that correlations between Karman vortex and SGS kinetic energy drastically decrease when the cutoff filter is used, which implies that the small scale universality holds even in the presence of the large scale coherent structure.

  • Flow over a circular cylinder is studied numerically using a turbulence model. Based on the κ-ε-f/sub μ/ model of Park and Sung[6], a new damping function is used. The efficiency of the strain dependent damping function is addressed for vortex-shedding flows past a circular cylinder. The mean velocity and Reynolds stresses are compared with available experimental data at Re/sub D/= 3900. Also, the computational results for the Strouhal number are evaluated at several Reynolds number. The predictions by κ-ε-f/sub μ/ model are in good agreement with the experiments.

  • In this paper, mass transfer in turbulent flow around a rotating circular cylinder is investigated by Direct Numerical Simulation for Schmidt numbers Sc=1 and 1670. Correlation between Sherwood and Reynolds number predicted agrees well with other experimental results over both Sc. Reynolds analogy identified at Sc=1 definitely causes a strong correlation between concentration fluctuation and streamwise velocity. For Sc=1670, it is found that positive small values of concentration fluctuations are observed more frequently than the case of Sc=1 particularly out of the range of Nernst diffusion layer in the viscous sub-layer. This fact is fully confirmed by detailed statistical study using a probability density function of concentration fluctuations.

  • The coherent wake structures behind a spinning cylinder placed in a uniform flow were experimentally investigated by means of phase averaging technique. With a fixed cylinder Reynolds number (Re=6,600), the conditionally sampled velocity vectors were obtained at a section of 3.0 and 10 diameters behind the cylinder for the range of spin parameter S(the ratio of the peripheral velocity to that of the uniform flow) 0 to 2. Spectral analysis and vorticity contours of the velocity data show that up to S=1.2, a Karman vortex street exists within the wake, however, the coherent structures become obscure and their vorticity strength decreases as S increase. Beyond S=1.2, a distinct vortex shedding frequency no longer exists, furthermore coherent structures disappear when S is over 1.6.

  • The suitability of high-order accurate, centered and upwind-biased compact difference schemes is evaluated for large eddy simulation of turbulent flow. Two turbulent flows are considered: turbulent channel flow at Re = 23000 and flow over a circular cylinder at Re = 3900. The effects of numerical dissipation on the finite differencing and aliasing errors and the subgrid-scale stress are investigated. It is shown through the simulations that compact upwind schemes are not suitable for LES, whereas the fourth order-compact centered scheme is a good candidate for LES provided that proper dealiasing of nonlinear terms is performed. The classical issue on the aliasing error and the treatment of nonlinear terms is revisited with compact difference schemes.

  • Near-wall effect on wakes behind particles is one of the important factors in precise tracking of particles in turbulent flows. However, most aerodynamic force models for particles did not fully consider the wall effect. In the present study, we focused on changes of hydrodynamic forces acting on a particle depending on wall proximity. To this end, we developed an immersed boundary method with multi-direct forcing incorporated to a fully implicit decoupling procedure for incompressible flows. We validate the present immersed boundary method through two-dimensional simulations of flow over a circular cylinder. Comprehensive parametric studies on the effect of the wall proximity on the drag and lift forces acting on an immersed circular cylinder in a channel flow are performed in order to investigate general flow patterns behind the circular cylinder for a wide range of Reynolds number (0.01 ${\leq}$ Re ${\leq}$ 200). As the cylinder is closer to the wall, the drag coefficient decreases while the lift coefficient increases with a local maximum. Maximum drag and lift coefficients for different wall proximities decrease with increment of Reynolds number. Normalized drag and lift coefficients by their maximum values show universal correlations between the coefficients and wall proximity in a low Reynolds number regime (Re ${\leq}$ 1).

  • As a computer has been continuously progressed to reduce R&D time and cost, the study of the flow physics has been significantly relied on the numerical method. Recently, Large Eddy Simulation(LES) has been widely used in CFD community to accurately capture the turbulent flows. The LES code requires high accuracy in time, as well as in space. Also, it should have strong robustness to ensure the convergence in various complicated flows. The objective of the present work is to develop a base code for LES simulation, having 2$^{nd}$ order accuracy in time and 4$^{th}$ order accuracy in space. To achieve the present objective, the four-step fractional step method was enhanced by adopting compact Pade'scheme. The standard Smagorinsky model was implemented for the first stage of the present code development. The flows over a cylinder and an airfoil were successfully simulated. and an airfoil were successfully simulated.
