  • The effect of the Coriolis force on the 2-D turbulent boundary layer which is developed in the side wall of the rotating rectangular flow channel was investigated. In this study, we measured mean velocities, turbulent velocity components(axial as well as lateral ones) and Reynolds stresses of the turbulent boundary layer. For high Reynolds number flows, the turbulent boundary layer without pressure gradient is hardly affected by the rotation. For low Reynolds number flows, however, the shearing stress at suction side decreases. Consequently, the velocity near the wall become slower so that the thickness of the viscous sublayer expands. On the other hand, the velocity near the wall at pressure side turns out increased.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of the initial turbulent intensity on the flow and heat transfer characteristics for a two-dimensional impinging jet. A square rod was installed at the nozzle exit to increase initial turbulent intensity. A hot wire probe and thermochromic liquid crystal technique were used to measure the turbulent intensity and the surface temperature. All measurements were made over a range of nozzle-to-plate distance from 1 to 10 at Re=20,000. When the rod is not installed, the maximum stagnation point Nusselt number is occurred at H/B=9. A higher initial turbulent intensity enhanced the heat transfer on the surface. A correlation between stagnation point Nusselt number and turbulent intensity are presented.

  • This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of a staggered dimpled surface to enhance the turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel. A optimization technique based on neural network is used with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stakes analysis of the fluid flow and heat transfer with Shear Stress Transport turbulence model. The dimple depth-to-dimple print diameter ratio, channel height-to-dimple print diameter ratio, and dimple print diameter-to-pitch ratio are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of terms related to heat transfer and friction loss with a weighting factor. Latin Hypercube Sampling is used to determine the training points as a mean of the Design of Experiment. Optimal values of the design variables were obtained in a range of the weighting factor.

  • A modified low-Reynolds-number Reynolds stress model is developed for the calculation of drag-reducing turbulent flows induced by polymer injection. The results without polymer injection are compared with the results of direct numerical simulation to ensure the validity of the basic model. In case of drag reduction, profiles of mean velocity and Reynolds stress components, in two-dimensional channel flow, obtained with a proper value of viscosity ratio are presented and discussed. Computed mean velocity profile is in very good agreement with experimental data. And, the qualitative behavior of Reynolds stress components with the viscosity ratio is also reasonable.

  • In this study, an analytic model is developed to predict Nusselt numbers for turbulent flow in a rod bundle. Flow channel area is divided into several element channels, and simple algebraic equations of universal velocity and temperature profiles are integrated over each element channel. The integral equations are then added to yield an analytic expression for the nusselt number of a rod bundle. The analytic model reasonably predicts the available heat transfer data.

  • In this study, the modification of turbulent boundary layer flow by local wall vibration is investigated. The wall is locally vibrated using a wall deformation actuator, which moves up and down at the frequencies of 100Hz and 50Hz. Simultaneous measurements of the streamwise velocities in the spanwise direction are performed at several wall-normal and streamwise locations using an in-house multi-channel hot wire anemometer and a spanwise hot-wire-probe rake. The mean velocity is reduced in most places due to the wall vibration and its reduced amount becomes small as flow goes downstream. Interestingly, the mean velocity is found to increase very near the wall and near the actuator. This is due to the motion induced by the streamwise vortices which are generated by the downward motion of the actuator. In case of the streamwise velocity fluctuations, their magnitude increases as compared to the unperturbed turbulent boundary layer, and the increased amount becomes small as the flow moves downstream. The modified flow field at the forcing frequency of 50Hz is not much different from that of 100Hz, except the reduced amount of modification.

  • The open-channel flow with submerged vegetation shows distinct features in two separate regions, namely upper and vegetation layers. In the upper layer, the flow is akin to the open-channel flow, while the flow in the vegetation layer is relatively uniform with suppressed turbulence due to vegetation stems. This paper presents laboratory experiments to investigate the characteristics of turbulent flows and suspended sediment transport in open-channel flows with submerged vegetation. An open-channel facility, 0.5 m wide and 12 m long, was used for laboratory experiments. Various discharges were employed with depth ratios of 2~3, and wooden cylinders were used for vegetation. To make equilibrium suspension, sediment particles of median diameter of 75 ${\mu}M$ were fed until capacity condition. Laser Doppler velocimeter was used to measure instantaneous velocity, and direct sampling with vinyl tube was used to measure the concentration of suspended sediment. Using the sampled data, the mean flow and turbulence structures were provided and characteristics of suspended sediment concentration with Rouse number were presented.

  • The piezoelectric bimorph film, which, as an actuator, can generate more effective displacement than the usual PVDF film, is used to control the turbulent boundary-layer flow. The change of wall pressures inside the turbulent boundary layer is observed by using the multi-channel microphone array flush-mounted on the surface when actuation at the non-dimensional frequency $f_b^+$:=0.008 and 0.028 is applied to the turbulent boundary layer. The wall pressure characteristics by the actuation to produce local displacement are more dominantly influenced by the size of the actuator module than the actuation frequency. The movement of large-scale turbulent structures to the upper layer is found to be the main mechanism of the reduction in the wall- pressure energy spectrum when the 700$700{\nu}/u_{\tau}$-long bimorph film is periodically actuated at the non- dimensional frequency $f_b^+$:=0.008 and 0.028. The biomorph actuator is triggered with the time delay for the active forcing at a single frequency when a 1/8' pressure-type, pin-holed microphone sensor detects the large-amplitude pressure event by the turbulent spot. The wall-pressure energy in the late-transitional boundary layer is partially reduced near the convection wavenumber by the open-loop control based on the large amplitude event.

  • This work is concerned with the prediction of turbulent friction factors in rod bundles. In this study, the Law of the Wall is assumed to be valid over the entire flow area. The flow channel is divided into element channels, and the algebraic form of the "Law of the Wall" is integrated over each element channel to yield an analytic expression for the pressure drop in the rod bundle. The method is applied to rod bundles with 1.2
