This paper investigates the impacts of turbulent anisotropy on the mean flow and turbulence structures in vegetated open-channel flows. The Reynolds stress model, which is an anisotropic turbulence model, is used for the turbulence closure. Plain open-channel flows and vegetated flows with emergent and submerged plants are simulated. Computed profiles of the mean velocity and turbulence structures are compared with measured data available in the literature. Comparisons are also made with the predictions by the k-$\epsilon$ model and by the algebraic stress model. For plain open-channel flows and open-channel flows with emergent vegetation, the mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles by isotropic and anisotropic turbulence models were hardly distinguished and they agreed well with measured data. This means that the mean flow and Reynolds stress is hardly affected by anisotropy of turbulence. However, anisotropy of turbulence due to the damping effect near the bottom and free surface is successfully simulated only by the Reynolds stress model. In open-channel flows with submerged vegetation, anisotropy of turbulence is strengthenednear the vegetation height. The Reynolds stress model predicts the mean velocity and turbulence intensity better than the algebraic stress model or the k-$\epsilon$ model. However, above the vegetation height, the k-$\epsilon$ model overestimates the mean velocity and underestimates turbulence intensity Sediment transport capacity of vegetated open-channel flows is also investigated by using the computed profiles. It is shown that the isotropic turbulence model underestimates seriously suspended load.

The structure of premixed turbulent flames in a constant-volume vessel was investigated using a microprobe method. The flame potential signal having one to eight peaks was detected in the case of turbulent flames, each of them being regarded as a flamelet existing in the flame zone. Based on this consideration, the flame propagation speed, the thickness of the flame zone, the number of flamelets and the separation distance between adjacent flamelets in the flame zone were measured. The experimental resuits of this work suggest the existence of "reactant islands" behind the flame front when the turbulence was intensified to some extent. The critical(lowest) ratio of turbulence intensity to the laminar burning velocity being found to be about 0.7 for the formation of reactant islands in this experiment.

With the assumption of the diffusion dominated flow, a numerical model has been developed for undertow and turbulence structure under the breaking wave by using the $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. Undertow is a strong mean current which moves seqwards below the level of wave trough in the surf zone. The turbulence, generated by wave breaking in the roller, spreads and dissipates downwards. The governing equations are composed of the equation of motion with the period-averaged shear stress due to waves; $textsc{k}$- and $\varepsilon$-equations with the turbulence energy Production due to wave breaking. They are discretised by the three-level fully implicit scheme, which can be solved by using Thomas algorithm. The model gives good agreements with measurements except for the station that is closest to the breaking point.

A method of synthetic time series generation was developed and applied to the simulation of homogeneous turbulence in a periodic 3 - D box and the hourly wind data simulation. The method can simulate almost exact sample auto and cross correlations of multiple time series and control non-Gaussian distribution. Using the turbulence simulation, influence of correlations, non-Gaussian distribution, and one-direction anisotropy on homogeneous structure were studied by investigating the spatial distribution of turbulence kinetic energy and enstrophy. An hourly wind data of Typhoon Robin was used to illustrate a capability of the method to simulate sample cross correlations of multiple time series. The simulated typhoon data shows a similar shape of fluctuations and almost exactly the same sample auto and cross correlations of the Robin.
In middle- and long-distance imaging systems, due to the atmospheric turbulence caused by temperature, wind speed, humidity, and so on, light waves propagating in the air are distorted, resulting in image-quality degradation such as geometric deformation and fuzziness. In remote sensing, astronomical observation, and traffic monitoring, image information loss due to degradation causes huge losses, so effective restoration of degraded images is very important. To restore images degraded by atmospheric turbulence, an image-restoration method based on improved compound multibranch feature fusion (CMFNetPro) was proposed. Based on the CMFNet network, an efficient channel-attention mechanism was used to replace the channel-attention mechanism to improve image quality and network efficiency. In the experiment, two-dimensional random distortion vector fields were used to construct two turbulent datasets with different degrees of distortion, based on the Google Landmarks Dataset v2 dataset. The experimental results showed that compared to the CMFNet, DeblurGAN-v2, and MIMO-UNet models, the proposed CMFNetPro network achieves better performance in both quality and training cost of turbulent-image restoration. In the mixed training, CMFNetPro was 1.2391 dB (weak turbulence), 0.8602 dB (strong turbulence) respectively higher in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio and 0.0015 (weak turbulence), 0.0136 (strong turbulence) respectively higher in terms of structure similarity compared to CMFNet. CMFNetPro was 14.4 hours faster compared to the CMFNet. This provides a feasible scheme for turbulent-image restoration based on deep learning.

The effects of secondary flow on the structure of a turbulent wake generated by a flat plate was investigated experimentally. The secondary flow was induced In a $90^{\circ}$ curved duct in which the flat plate wake generator was installed. The wake generator was installed in such a way that the wake velocity gradient exists in the span wise direction of the curved duct. Measurements were made in the plane containing the mean radius of curvature where pressure gradient and curvature effects were small compared with the secondary flow effect. All six components of the Reynolds stresses were measured in the curved duct. Turbulence intensities in the curved wake are higher than those in the straight wake due to an increase of the turbulent kinetic energy production by the secondary flow. In the inner wake region, shear stress and strain in the plane containing the velocity gradient of the wake show opposite signs with respect to each other, so that eddy viscosity Is negative in this region. This indicates that gradient-diffusion type turbulence models are not appropriate to simulate this type of flow.
This study presents the flow visualization results, velocity and turbulence intensity measurements made within an air filter cover and entry region of a mass air flow sensor (MAFS) which is used in an induction system of 3.8L engine. Flow structure in two air filter cover assemblies were examined. The first was a clear plastic replica of the production cover while the second was a modified clear plastic cover with a geometry configured to reduce fluctuations. High speed flow visualization and laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) systems were used to reveal and analyze the flow field characteristics encountered in the sensor design process under steady flow conditions. A 40-watt copper vapor laser was used as a light source. Its beam is focused down to a sheet of light approximately 1.5mm thick. The light scattered off the particles was recorded by a 16mm high speed rotating prism camera at 5000 frames per second. A comparison of the flow patterns and LDV measurements in the original and modified air filter covers is presented to illustrate the controlling effect of the cover design on the turbulence structure formation near the bypass and on the sensor output signal. In both axial and radial planes of the main passage it was found that the turbulence flow pattern is remarkably influenced by the air filter cover and main passage configuration.
Simultaneous PIV and OH PLIF measurements are used for shear strain rates and flame locations, respectively. It is believed that the shear strain rates represent flow characteristics such as turbulence intensity and the OH intensity indicates the flame characteristics such as burning velocities. However, these are still lack of geometric information, which may be very important to flame quenching Hence, fractal dimensions 'Df) of the OH images are adopted as an additional information. Finally, the flame structure diagram proposed in this research has three parameters, which consist of strain rates, OH intensities and fractal dimensions. The results show that this diagram classifies turbulent premixed flames more effectively based on flame structures. The regime of weak turbulence is limited to narrow strain ranges and has the fractal dimension of about 2 In the regime of moderate turbulence, OH intensities increase as strain rates increase and the values of fractal dimensions are 1.8 Df 1.95. The regimes of thickened reaction and flame extinction (quenching) show bell-shaped and their values of fractal dimensions are 1.5 Df 1.7 and 0.9 Df 0.6, respectively.
The turbulence structure for fully developed flow through the subchannels formed by the bare rod array depends on the pitch to rod diameter ratio. For fairly open spaced bare rod arrays, the distributions of the three components of the turbulent normal stresses are similar to those measured in circular pipe. However, for more closely spaced arrays, the turbulence structure, especially in the gap region, depart markedly from the pipe flow distribution. A linear relationship between turbulent normal stresses and turbulent kinetic energy for fully developed turbulent flow through regularly spaced bare rod arrays has been developed. This correlation can be used in connection with various theoretical analyses applied in turbulence research.

Linear estimation in isotropic turbulence is examined to approximate conditional averages in the form of fluctuating velocity fields conditioned on local velocity. The conditional flow fields and their associated vorticity field are computer using experimental data [Van Atta and Chen] and energy spectrum model [Driscoll and Kennedy]. It appears that ring vorticies could be the dominant structure. Due to the extremely large vorticity in the viscous region of a conditional ring vortex, the energy spectrum model can be used appropriately by changing the Reynolds number. The hairpin vortex could be detected by combining vorticies in isotropic field with an anisotropic orientation imbedded in uniform mean shear flow and this is consistent with other studies [Kim and Moin].
